2. WHAT IS POWER QUALITY ?
There is no ultimate definition for power quality !
The ultimate measure of power quality is determined by
the performance and the productivity of end user
equipment.
Power quality offers solutions to achieve a complete
supervision of all the essential parameters required for
a clean powering of an electrical installation.
3. Contents
Measuring network quality in the context of
deregulation: the MAGIQ approach.
Assessing network quality: the role of network
analysers.
Network analysis for industrial investors.
4. INTEREST FOR UTILITIES
To insure that the delivered power
quality is compliant with the standards.
To provide an efficient global overview
of the grid.
To answer to the deregulated market
demand.
5. Context
Contractual obligations of the French power distributor
ERDF in terms of electricity supply quality
Electricity supply continuity
Wave quality
These obligations are set out in several documents:
Policy document on measurements for quality monitoring on the
EDF managed distribution network
Professional customer contracts (GRDF, CARD and other
contract)
Catalogue of services provided by the distributor ERDF
In this context, the distributor ERDF has developed the 'MAGIQ' application
These obligations and commitments require control by
appropriate means
6. MAGIQ – what's the application about?
MAGIQ is a French nationwide Intranet
application
On a single national server, it consolidates all the
data taken from readings made by measuring devices
installed on the electrical network
These measuring devices can be installed at the
Source power station or at a MV customer's
7. MAGIQ – what are the functionalities ?
Functions currently available in MAGIQ enable:
Consistent data display (at national or local level)
Production of standardized quality reports for equipped
customers
What's at stake for ERDF
Enhanced quality of data collected through remote meter
readings
Enhanced quality of available information
9. MAGIQ Application Description
Analysis of HV voltage
At the substation: at the secondary of each HV/MV transformer
At customers' who have a personalized contract for voltage
supervision
At customers' who have a personalized contract for voltage
troughs
Based on measurements taken by Contractual Network Analysers.
At customers' who have a standard contract
Based on the quality data recorded by the ICEs (revenue meters)
where such devices are installed
10. What are the results ?
MAGIQ counts events (dip, outages, overvoltages) and takes
measurements (RMS voltage, imbalance, frequency,
flicker, harmonics)
Production of Quality reports
Personalized quality reports on dips (Contractual Network Analysers)
Personalized quality reports on outages (Revenue meters where
appropriate)
Standard quality reports (Revenue meters or Contractual Network
analysers)
Detailed quality reports on demand (Contractual Network Analysers)
Quality history over the previous 4 calendar years

20. SOLUTION
THE POWER QUALITY AUDIT SERVICE
The Power Quality audit service consists in
providing customers with a complete analysis of
their installation.
You fit the equipment which is an easy operation
By GSM transmission data are collected and then
analysed by Alpes Technologies experts.
Alpes Technologies sends back a complete report with
recommendations.
21. Example: Cardboard mill
A 2-week study shows that the main network
disturbance comes from the flicker produced by the
welding stations which generates lamp flickering
and wear in the electrical equipment.
Voltage harmonics rates are not excessively high,
current harmonics are higher.
Recommendation: install an ALPISTATIC-type fast-
tripping capacitor bank to match rapid load
variations (within less than one minute) equipped
with an induction coil for protection against all
harmonics.
The capacitor bank will reduce the flicker rate and
clean up the network, with direct consequences:
lesser wear in electrical equipment
improved productivity thanks to better visual comfort
22. Going further: the Power Quality audit service
The Power Quality audit service involves
measuring the electrical parameters of your
installation
You fit the equipment and a remote reading is
taken of the data for your device(s)
This data is then analyzed and a measurement
report produced
23. The Audit report: a global summary overview
to enable quick and precise decisions
Global outcome of the measuring campaign
Indicator
