Chemsketch is a molecular modeling program used to create and modify images
of chemical structures. Also, there is a software (Chem3D) that allows molecules and molecular
models displayed in two and three dimensions, to understand the structure of chemical bonds
and the nature of the functional groups.
It is product of Advanced Chemistry Development laboratories.
This program offers some advanced features that allows the molecules rotate and
apply color to improve visualization. It has several templates with ions and functional groups
with the possibility to add text and use other tools to optimize productions created by the
software. names of organic molecules as well as Lewis structures, 3D structures, space filling
models or ball and stick models.

1. Single click anywhere on the main screen. You should see CH4 appear
on the screen.

2. Position the pointer over that CH4. You will know when the pointer is
properly positioned because a faint box will appear around the C atom (along
with its hydrogens). Single click. You should now see H3C-CH3 (which is
ethane).

3. Position the pointer over either C-region of that H3C-CH3. You will know
when the pointer is properly positioned because a faint box will appear around
the C atom you have chosen (along with its hydrogens). Single click. You
should now see a 2D structure of propane CH3

1. Draw molecular structures with the program named “ChemSketch” .

Chose any mode which is required
ChemSketch: Drawing 3-D Molecular Structures1. To start drawing:
Click anywhere on the window pane, the formula CH4 appears.
2. To substitute H with another element:
Click on the element symbol (on the left), or on the small periodic table icon on the upper left side and hit
“OK”.
Click on the pane (a non-metal will always appear with the correct number of H’s.)
Click on one of the structures (without releasing the mouse) and drag a line to connect the 2 formulas.
(Note: The program ‘knows’that it needs to eliminate H’s.)
3. To clean the structure:
Click on “Tools”, “Clean Structure”
4. To draw the 3-D structure:
Click on the “3D Viewer”, which appears as an icon at top right menu.
Click on the “3D Optimization” icon (5th from right).
Click on the “Balls and Sticks” icon.
5. To rotate the molecule:
Click and drag the structure in any direction.
6. To Change Colors: Click “Options”, “Colors”:
To change background color from black (to any color, white preferred): Choose white color.
To change colors of atoms: Choose the atom and its new color.
7. To copy structure and paste it into Word or PowerPoint:
Click “Edit”, “Copy”. Go to Word or PowerPoint and Click “Paste Special”, “ACD 3D Object”.

Lewis structure formation is the important feature of ChemSketch.
It is used to draw Lewis structure. In ChemSketch there are by
default templates of Lewis structure but customizing facility is
available to draw Lewis structure on your wish using dots and
cross…
3D view is best feature of ChemSketch which is used to visualize
chemical structure in 3D mode in different formations like wire
frame, ball & sticks, space fill, disk and dotted structure with
different background.

  • 13. ChemSketch: Drawing 3-D Molecular Structures1. To start drawing: Click anywhere on the window pane, the formula CH4 appears. 2. To substitute H with another element: Click on the element symbol (on the left), or on the small periodic table icon on the upper left side and hit “OK”. Click on the pane (a non-metal will always appear with the correct number of H’s.) Click on one of the structures (without releasing the mouse) and drag a line to connect the 2 formulas. (Note: The program ‘knows’that it needs to eliminate H’s.) 3. To clean the structure: Click on “Tools”, “Clean Structure” 4. To draw the 3-D structure: Click on the “3D Viewer”, which appears as an icon at top right menu. Click on the “3D Optimization” icon (5th from right). Click on the “Balls and Sticks” icon. 5. To rotate the molecule: Click and drag the structure in any direction. 6.
