LEARNING OBJECTIVES
4. DEVELOPMENT
“Progressive series of changes that occur in a predictable
pattern as the result of interactions between biological
and environmental factors.”
Neil J. Salkind (2004)
8. Sigmund Freud
(1856-1939) Sigmund Freud, the Father of
Psychoanalysis, was a physiologist, a
neurologist, and a psychologist. He was born
in Austria but later moved to Vienna where he
accomplished most of his life’s work.
9. Freud’s Psychosexual
Theory
People who study human development became
interested with Freud’s theory of development but it also
sparked controversies because even though its
orientation is biological, it focuses on the psychosexual
development of an individual. Freud also believed that
early experiences are important in human development.
He considered instincts as the main source of life
energy that finds its way into the different parts of the
body called “erogenous” zones. [1]
10. Freud’s Psychosexual Theory
Satisfaction and Fixation
If the erogenous zones are satisfied, the person is most
likely to have a healthy development. However, if the needs
for satisfaction are not met, or are excessively satisfied,
fixation to that particular stage occurs.
Fixation is characterized by an attachment to a particular
object or activity that may affect development, and that may
be manifested later on in one’s life.
Ramos et. al.
Erogenous zones are parts of the body that
have strong pleasure –giving qualities at
particular stages of development. These
include the mouth, the anus and the genitals.
