● Technology Tools utilized for ELL students
○ Canva/Piktochart
○ StoryboardThat
○ Read&Write for Chrome by TextHelp
■ Three Classroom Scenarios

● Group Project
● Formative Assessment (in-class activity)
Technology Tools should…
Aide in demonstrating a concept, skill, or
strategy
Provide feedback for student development
Help students build their vocabulary
3. Canva/PiktoChart: Group Project Collaboration
Canva/PiktoChart: Canva and PiktoChart are websites that allow for an individual to create graphics using
textboxes, pictures, videos, etc. to demonstrate their understanding of a concept or skill. The site is free for the basic tools
(which get the job done) and they look very clean and professional. Also, there are multiple templates for an individual to
choose from.
Classroom Scenario: Students are working in groups of four and five students to demonstrate their knowledge of
the last ten chapters of Tolkien’s, The Hobbit. Students are to create a poster that peaks the interest of the audience. The
poster should have the title, the author, a summary of the chapters, and a literary device found in the writing.
In order to provide feedback of the work, each group will write and discuss three positives and three weaknesses (aside
from spelling) from each poster. These then will be discussed as a whole by the teacher and the class the next day.
Teachers can also utilize this as a vocabulary tool, where the students would create a flyer for vocabulary words, or
perhaps an advertisement.
4. StoryboardThat: Formative Assessment (in-class activity)
StoryboardThat: StoryboardThat is a website that allows individuals to create their own storyboards. They
can choose avatars (hair, race, outfit, etc.), the setting, the background, etc.
Classroom Scenario: The class has been reading The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. The teacher would like the
students to create their own storyboard that introduces the structure of the novel (characters, setting, conflict). The
students will be able to use the novel to help them, and they may use their class notes.
This tool allows students to demonstrate their understanding of a concept through their ability to visualize the
characters and the setting. The students then have to name the conflict in a concise manner and utilize their
vocabulary from reading the first few chapters. This technical tool can really help ELL students because it is more
on the creative aspect and allows for them to put small details into reality (building a world from their reading).
Students can also print these out (without a name) and discuss feedback from other students and the teacher.
5. Read&Write for Chrome by TextHelp: Summative Assessment (Test)
Read&Write for Chrome by TextHelp: Read&Write for Chrome is a device that allows an individual
to listen to the writing on a document or website. Students can have accommodations for tests and reading passages;
it can be used for a whole text or just pieces of a text. It also has translation and annotation features.
Classroom Scenario: Students have been preparing for a test on Tolkien’s The Hobbit. There are a few
students with very low English proficiency, and they will be needing a tool that can help them read and understand
the material. These students will be given the test in an electronic format and they can write their answers down on
paper.
In order to be sure that all students know how to use this as a resources, the teacher will use this website during
reading time. It will be assigned for the students to highlight new words and define them, or annotate their thoughts
next to the reading.
This tool will allow for students to work on their vocabulary. Secondly, while utilizing this tool, students can reflect
upon how this helps them and what they need to work on in regards to vocabulary and reading.
