This document provides an overview of sepsis, including definitions, causes, risk factors, progression, treatment, and guidelines. Sepsis is a major health problem worldwide, affecting 30 million people annually and resulting in 6 million deaths. It occurs when the body's response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs. The Surviving Sepsis Campaign recommends bundles of care to be completed within 3 and 6 hours of recognition, including administering antibiotics, fluids, and vasopressors, and reassessing tissue perfusion, in order to reduce mortality from sepsis.
