• A section of the brain that is located at the back of the skull.
• Its function is to coordinate voluntary movements, posture
and balance.
• Also involves precision and accurate timing
• Latin for “ Little Brain”
• Often confused with cerebral(Located in the front of the
brain)

• Cerebellum only makes up 10% of the brain’s entire weight (3lbs)
• If the human cortex (the outer layer of the cerebrum) were unfolded,
it would cover an area roughly the size of a pillowcase.
• Most if not all cerebellar diseases are terminal.
• Some people are born without a cerebellum. (rare)

5. Parts of the Cerebellum
• Archicerebellum (Helps maintain equilibrium and coordinate eye, neck,
and head movements)
• Midline vermis (coordinate trunk and leg movements)
• Lateral Hemispheres (quick and fine movements in limbs, mostly in the
arms.
6. Symptoms of Cerebellar
Disease
• Loss of coordination of motor movement termed as
Asynergia.
• Inability to judge distance and when to stop termed as
dysmetria
• Inability to perform rapid alternating movements termed
adiadochokinesia
• Tremors during movements termed intention tremors
• Staggering wide based walking termed ataxic gait
