4. Cerebellum
⢠The largest part of hind brain and major center of
receiving the information from cerebral cortex and from
whole body is named as cerebellum.
⢠The major information it receives from body is of
Proprioception.
⢠It acts as a guide of cerebral cortex to execute a movement.
5. Basic Function of Cerebellum
â˘Three Basic function are there of
cerebellum,
1.To Maintain Tone in the muscles
2.Balance and Posture Maintenance
3.Co-ordination of Movement
6.
7. Location of its presence
â˘Posterior to Brain Stem.
â˘Inferior to cerebrum and tentorium Cerebelli.
8.
9. Connections to Brain Stem
⢠By Bundles of axons or nerve fibers cerebellum is connected to brain
stem, these bundles of axons are called as Cerebellar Peduncles.
1. For Connection of Mid Brain with Cerebellum = Superior Cerebellar
Peduncles
2. For Connection of Pons with Cerebellum = Middle Cerebellar
Peduncles
3. For Connection of Medulla Oblongata with Cerebellum = Inferior
Cerebellar Peduncles
13. Gross Structure of Cerebellum
â˘Grossly cerebellum has two halves called as
Cerebellar Hemispheres.
â˘One is Right and One is Left Cerebellar
Hemisphere.
14. Vermis
⢠Two Halves are joined by a narrow depression in middle. This part is called
as Vermis.
⢠Because it looks like a worm
17. Surface View of Whole Cerebellum
⢠Various Folds are present on the surface of
cerebellum. These folds are called as Folia.
18.
19.
20. Fissures on the Surface of Cerebellum
⢠Total 3 Fissures are present.
⢠Two main and one less important fissures are present on the surface of cerebellum.
⢠Two main fissures are,
1. Primary Fissure
2. Uvulonodular Fissure or Posterolateral Fissure
⢠Less important one is
⢠Horizontal Fissure
21.
22.
23. Anatomical Division of Cerebellum
⢠Two main fissure divide the whole cerebellum into
three lobes.
1. Anterior Lobe
2. Middle lobe or Posterior Lobe
3. Flocculonodular Lobe
24.
25. Anterior Lobe
â˘That lobe which lies superior to primary
fissure is called as Anterior Lobe.
â˘Mainly this lobe is associated with tone in the
muscles.
26.
27.
28. Posterior or Middle Lobe
⢠That lobe which lies between primary fissure and
Uvulonodular fissure is middle lobe or posterior
lobe.
⢠This lobe is associated with Coordination of
movement and planning of movement .
29.
30. Flocculonodular lobe
⢠This is the most primitive or older lobe.
⢠The lobe which lies inferior to Uvulonodular
fissure is named as Flocculonodular lobe.
⢠This lobe is associated with Balance and posture
maintenance.
34. Cerebellar Cortex
⢠It is gray matter, so it is made up of cell bodies.
⢠Three layers of cell are present in the cerebellar cortex,
⢠My = Molecular Layer (Basket Cells)
⢠Personal = Purkinje Layer (Purkinje Cells)
⢠Gang = Granular Layer (Golgi Cells)
35.
36. Deep Cerebellar Nuclei
⢠4 Deep Cerebellar Nuclei are present in each hemisphere.
1. Dentate Nucleus
2. Emboliform Nucleus
3. Globose Nucleus
4. Fastigial Nucleus
