PERSPECTIVE
•As a victim of Marcos’ cruel
regime
•As the faithful wife of
Senator Benigno Aquino
•As the People’s Champion
•As the Mother of Asian
Democracy
20. CONTEXT
• The speech of Aquino was influenced by the situation of the country after
the Marcos’ administration. The country was left in an oppressed situation
for over more than one decade. This caused the Filipino citizens to be left
and be burdened with the debt committed by Marcos during his regime,
which they did not receive any benefit from. The dust of the Martial Law was
ony starting to settle, but the Philippines was reckoning with everything
Marcos’ administration had inflicted. Hat included the $26 billion in total
foreign debt, and a communist insurgency that grew, throughout the Marcos
era, from 500 armed guerillas to 16,000.
21. CONNECTIONS
• In Cory’s speech which was penned by Teddy Locsin Jr., she
highlighted a particular event that happened to her husband in the
hands of the powerful dictator. In connection with it, she provided
detailed information on how she took a stand to set free the Filipino
people to fight against the Marcos regime. She also mentioned how
she experienced the corruption under the commission on election and
she also praised the people’s bravery to face the injustice system to
have a revolution.
22. CONCLUSIONS
• The former president Corazon Aquino's speech provides us with insights into
the Filipino people's struggle for freedom and how past acts of steadfast resistance
have influenced present Filipino revolutionaries. Additionally, it clarifies what
actually occurred when Ninoy Aquino was president. The challenges the Aquino’s
underwent to aid the Philippines in achieving freedom are detailed in the document.
The debt committed by the previous administration preceding Cory Aquino was also
noted in the text. This lecture also demonstrates how a dictatorship becomes a
democratic system of government down to its president's laws, order, and
regulations.
23. CONCLUSIONS
The document also mentions Ninoy Aquino's murder and the horror caused by
torture and imprisonment during Martial Law. It also reveals the issues Cory
Aquino faced as soon as she came to power, such as unemployment and
poverty. After Ninoy Aquino's passing, two elections were referenced in the
document. His wife took part in the election and came in last in the first
round. She was elected president during the second, which was a quick
election, and proclaimed democracy in the nation.
