3. ABOUT SME CORP MALAYSIA
1996 - Small & Medium Industries
Development Corporation (SMIDEC) was
formed under MITI to develop SMEs to be
competitive in the global market on 2 May
1996.
2000 - SMI Development Plan was introduced.
2004 – National SME Development Council
(NSDC) was formed as the highest policy-
making body for SME development. Bank
Negara Malaysia was appointed as the NSDC
Secretariat.

5. ABOUT SME CORP MALAYSIA
2008 – SMIDEC took over the role of NSDC
Secretariat from Bank Negara Malaysia.
2009 – SMIDEC was officially rebranded as
Small and Medium Enterprise Corporation
Malaysia (SME Corp.Malaysia) on 2 October
2000.
2010 – SME Corp.Malaysia’s Strategic Plan
(2010-2015) was launced.
2012 – SME Master plan (2012-2020) was
launched as a catalyst to drive SMEs to help
achieve Vision 2020.
2020 – and beyond.

17. SNAPSHOT ON MINIMUM WAGES
POLICY
• The government announced Minimum Wages
policy on 30 April 2012 to address labour market
distortions are wage growth did not
commensurate with productivity growth.
• Starting 1 July 2016, the current Minimum
Wages:
RM1000 per month minimum wage for Peninsular
Malaysia.
RM920 per month minimum wages for Sabah,
Sarawak & Federal Territory of Labuan.

POLICY
• Local and foreign workforce covered
under this policy, except for domestic
helpers and gardeners.
• Malaysian workers
No deferment for Malaysian workers.
Minimum Wages apply as stipulated in the
minimum Wages Order 2012.
19. SNAPSHOT ON MINIMUM WAGES
POLICY
• Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
Minimum Wages impact SMEs that employ
low-skilled workers and lack of automation.
Blanket deferment for foreign workers until 31
December 2013.
No salary deductions for levy, accommodation
and for any other benefits.
• Non-SMEs
May make individual deferment applications to
the Council before 30 June 2013.
20. OBJECTIVE OF MINIMUM WAGES
POLICY
• Ensure basic needs of workers and
families are met.
• Provide sufficient social protection.
• Encourage industries to move up the
value chain by investing in higher
technology and to increase labour
productivity.
• Reduce dependence on foreign workers.
21. CONCLUSION
In conclusion, we can find out about managing SME
Corporation as the main reference point for research
and dissemination of information on SMEs as well as
providing advisory services for SMEs in Malaysia how
to handle small cooperatives by helping through
infrastructure access to financing, financial
restructuring, coordination of advisory, information,
training and marketing, and as a comprehensive SME
database to monitor the progress of SMEs in all
economic sectors. SME Corp. Malaysia has established
partnerships and partnerships with industry
associations and strategic partners from both the
public and private sectors to strengthen cooperation in
specific sectors and industries to support and promote
the development of SMEs in Malaysia.
