2. WHAT IS RISK MANAGEMENT?
The process of evaluating the risks to
safety and health
arising from hazards at work, forms an
integral part of
the Occupational Safety and Health
Management System.
The guidelines provide simple steps which are required to
be taken to identify any hazards at the place of work, to
determine the severity of any such risks and to implement
control measures to eliminate and/or control the
risks accordingly.
3. THE RISK ASSESSMENT PROCESS:
PLANNING HAZARD IDENTIFICATION EVALUATION
CONTROL MONITORING AND REVIEW
5. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
Identifying factors that have the potential to cause injury
or harm to the health of a person.
TYPE OF HAZARDS:
- Chemical
- Mechanical
- Physical
- Biological
- Psychosocial
- Environmental
- Fire
- Ergonomic
7. CONTROL
Implementing control measures to eliminate or minimize the risk of an unwanted
event, to a level as low as is reasonably practicable.
The basic
principles of
control of
risk are:
Personal protective
equipment (least eff
ective).
Elimination (most
effective).
Substitution.
Engineering controls
Administrative controls and
procedural measures.
8. MONITORING AND REVIEW
Ensuring the control measures are in place, effective
and working and in use.
Reassessing the effectiveness of control measures
whenever and wherever changes are made to the
work process or the working environment.
Reviewing every two years or as required under section
10 of Occupational Safety and Health Act 2005.
