2. Attract – Masthead
• I made a simple but cool and informing (InD –
becomes Indie when you read it, which is the
genre of the magazine) masthead so it would
be easy for the reader to recognise and when
the magazine is put on display in the store,
with other magazines on top of it you will still
be able to see the left side of it, and that’s
where the logo is.
3. Attract – Photograph(s)
• As I explained on question 2 the front image has just one focus to it – the
girl who has a strong pose and attitude glowing from the picture. The
girl’s position can be interpreted as if she is shielding and protecting her
as well as it means love and warmth on sign language. Which will be up
to the reader to decide what they interpret - broadening the attraction
to people wanting to know why she is shielding herself of why she is
signing the love sign.
• On the contents page all of the pictures are taken outside, something
that is quite unusual for a music magazine. But still there is a wide rang of
pictures with different locations and different meaning to them. This can
lead to several people building an interest though the variety of pictures
and styles.
4. Attract – Photograph(s)
2
• All the pictures for the cover page, the first and
second dps are staged. That leads to all of them
having more a posed prostitute that can contain a
“hidden” meaning. Attracting the audience when they
first see the front page and wonder why she is
positioned that way and then read further and wonder
about the “hidden” meaning of the other photos are.
5. Attract – Colours
• The colours on the front page and second dps are very natural
and down to earth. The pictures are also very natural with just
light colours cloth and simple makeup.
• Whereas the first dps have strong colours like bright red, black
against the white/cream white background.
• There is a big contrast between the two pages and outfits which
is emphasises by the use of colours where the first dps is sexual
with the use of red and black together and the strong use of
makeup. On the contrary you have the front cover where I have
used light pink/peach and cream white colours which gives the
picture a more innocent look to it.
• The use of several colours can be connect to attract different
social group to the magazine. Therefore my chose to have
different use of colours might attract a wider rage of social
groups i.e. Indie kids, hipsters but also rock groups.
6. Attract – Competition
• I got the idea to have a competition from the survey I
did, where they also had to answer what they would like
to receive form the contest and the answer the got the
most votes was a competition for concert tickets.
• That is why I have used a big space on the contents page
with a red background against the white
text to emphasis the contest for the reader.
To win something always attracts
people, so it may attract people to buy the
magazine only to participate in the contest but
by them buying the magazine the brand
gains revenue and it that buyer might realize that
the actually like that magazine and want to
buy next moths copy
7. Attract – Layout
• That the magazine is very simple, with natural
colours, a photo focusing on one thing and a
steady and clean layout which might attract to a
higher stage of my target age group (19-21).
• Steady and clean layout reflects on the
minimalistic use of overlapping, where about the
text is placed slightly over her elbows, but is not
interfering with the picture. The rest of the text is
running downs columns on the sides of the
picture, again not interfering with the photo.
8. Attract – Cover lines
• The cover lines are very typical slogans for all
magazines but they also attract the audience –
just turned old enough to attend and rebel at
festivals. Therefore will they be interested in
knowing where they should go, what’s hot and
not. They would also want to know which are
the “top” artists for this genre. Again the need
to know what’s hot and not.
9. Attract – Price
• The magazine costs 2,20 pounds which is a
reasonable low price for a quality magazine.
This is due to the fact that the audience are
students who won’t buy or have the money to
buy an expensive magazine. The magazine has
about 50 pages all filled with things that would
attract it’s audience.
10. Writing style
• When I did my textual analysis of magazines I noticed the difference between Q and
Kerrang! was very much the language. Q have a very formal language while Kerrang!
uses more outstanding words. This also reflected on the magazines class and audience.
• On my magazine I have used quite a formal language but for my front cover I used
typical slogans for the cover lines such as: exclusive, “Must have albums” and festival
reviews. And in the under text of these cover lines I have tried to create excitement by
using rhyme and by having alliteration.
• On my contents page I have used a lot of metaphors to describe the picture. I have
tried to use words like; glory, sensational, funfunfun to create excitement for the
reader.
• On the dps I made the text more exciting to read by not writing directly the meaning.
Instead for writing “everybody in America loves her” I have written about her having
“America at her feet”. I have also used a lot of quotes.
