5. Calotropis procera
Calotropis procera, a plant from Asclepidaceae family is well known for its
medicinal and anti-cancerous property. It found in tropical Africa and
several parts of Asia. Different parts such as leaves, roots and bark,
flowers, fruits, stem and latex of the plant have been reported to
possesses various phytochemicals which inturn possesses various
pharmacological activities. The coarse shrub possesses
acaricidal,schizonticidal,antimicrobial,anthelmintic,insecticidal,anti-
inflammatory, antidiarrheal, anti-cancerous and larvicidal activities with
other beneficial properties.
6. ANTI-CANCEROUS ACTIVITY
The protein fraction of the latex(LP) was evaluated to determine its potential
cytotoxic activity against human cancer cell line MCF-7. The cell line MCF-7
(breast) was treated with increasing concentrations of LP for 24 hours and
analyzed by the MTT Assay. The cytotoxic activity of LP is due, partly, the
inhibition of the synthesis of DNA. LP is a target for DNA Topoisomerase-I
triggering apoptosis in cancer cell lines. The anti-cancer potential of steroid
UNBS1450 (derived from 2-oxovoruscharin) from C.procera additionally exerts
an anti-cancer activity. UNBSI450 has proved to be a potent sodium pump
inhibitor, showing anti-proliferative and cell-death inducing activities. This anti-
cancer potential of UNBS1450 is achieved by disorganization of the actin
cytoskeleton after binding to the sodium pump at the cellular membrane, by
inducing autophagy-related cell death, by repressing NF-KB activation as well
as by down-regulating c-Myc in cancer cells.
7. Baliospermum montanum
Baliospermum montanum (Willd.) Muell-Arg Euphorbiaceae,
commonly known as Dantií is a leafy stout monoecious
undershrub. The plant is found in Nepal, Burma, Malaya and
India. The phytochemical study revealed the high quantity
presence of steroids, triterpenoids, glycosides, saponins,
alkaloids, flavanoids, phenolic compunds, tannins, sugars etc. of
root and leaves derived calli. A scrutiny of literature revealed
some notable pharmacological activities of the plant such as
anticancer, antimicrobial, free radical scavenging,
immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, and anthelmintic.
8. PHYTOCHEMISTRY(B.montanum)
The phytochemical studies on the roots of B. montanum revealed
presence of five phorbol esters, presence of flavonoids,
glycosides, sterols and absence of alkaloids, saponins and
terpenoids.
The seeds reports the presence of glycosides and terpenoids.
The leaves showed presence of steroids, terpenoids, flavonoids,
and absence of alkaloids and saponins in the leaves of the plant.
9. CYTOTOXIC ACTIVITY(B.montanum)
Cytotoxic activity of the B.montanum root extract and isolated
compounds were investigated against selected two cancerous
liver cells, HepG2 and KKU-M156, and a traditional cell, HaCaT.
However, the isolated compounds exhibited moderate cytotoxic
activity to the cancerous cells. The biological activities that
indicate the connection between immunity, inflammation, and
cancer.
