The Big Five Personality Test Essay
The Big Five personality test was created in the 1970 's by two independent research teams. One team with Paul Costa and Robert McCrae, and the
other with Warren and Lewis Goldberg. The two teams had different methods that they tested but in the end they both ended up with the same
results. The results were that no matter what culture, race, or language people have their personality fits into five dimensions of personality. The
five dimensions were created after reviewing lots of surveys and data analysis called factor analysis. Now, just forty years later the Big Five is
one of the most commonly accepted personality models. Analyses shows that personality changes throughout life as different personality traits are
used and forgotten. The results are generalized and don't always apply to people but typically the results are correct. The Big Five is a personality
test asks questions about how you see yourself. Some questions were "I see myself as someone who tends to find fault with others" and "I see
myself as someone who does things efficiently". Each question is answered on a scale 1 (strongly disagreeing) to 5 (strongly agreeing). The test is
around 45 questions long. Scores were represented in percentiles so that comparison could be made between people. The percentiles were based on
groups determined by location and age. My scores were for someone around the age of 18 in North Carolina. My book character's scores were from
people around the age of 17 in the UK. My

Our ways of interacting with others and the environment are affected by an innumerable amount of factors such as; our cultural context, the particular
social situation we are placed in, our health and financial situation, relation with others, our early childhood experiences etc. Due to this, the 'one size
fits all' approach that many theoretical models of personality follow is problematic (Borghans, Duckworth, Heckman & ter Weel, 2008). The approach
stems from the increasing rate of globalisation: commercial companies are hiring many international employees, placing a high demand on
psychologists to develop aptitude, intelligence as well as personality tests (Moyle, 2015). However, personality assessments and applications have
strong use within Western countries, this means that the norms of what 'normal' (and thereby non pathological) personality have been developed
according to Western culture. Simply translating the personality test into another language and distributing it to another culture, as has been done in
the past, is inappropriate and problematic. For example, personality research has demonstrated that participants with a Chinese cultural history score

I do find my values to be important to me, but I am not one to push my values onto others because I would never ask someone to believe in or do
something they did not agree with. Overall this analysis of my personality seems to be pretty accurate with a few traits from the ISFP category as
well. Myers and Briggs created a personality test that not only will help people to figure out their personality types, but at the same time it aids in the
discovery of which career pathways people should take based on their specific personality traits. Based on the personality trait INFP that was given to
me from the Myer–Briggs test I have quite a few career pathways that fit my personality. Some of the career choices suited to my personality is a
writer, counselor, teacher/professor, psychologist, psychiatrist, musician, or a religious worker; which seems like a pretty broad selection.
Although there is a broad selection of careers that would suit my personality none of which are the career path that I have chosen; which is to
become a physical therapist, but if I was not set on a goal some of these career ideas would not seem too bad. While reading the list of jobs suited for
my personality I was surprised to see that psychologist was on the list because before I decided to go for physical therapy I wanted to pursue a career

assessment scored my personality as follows: Extraversion – (21) relatively low Agreeableness – (16) relatively low Conscientiousness – (36) about
average Neuroticism – (16) relatively low Openness – (29) relatively high The website clarifies that, "... 'relatively low ' means your score was in the
bottom 30%, 'relatively high ' in the top 30%, and 'about average ' somewhere in the middle." It is also notable to add that the website encouraged
that discretion should be used when reviewing one's results. Furthermore, it was explained that instead of "concentrating on particular scores" one
should try to "interpret...results on the basis of the overall pattern." Generally, what I have derived from my test results is that I have a cynical
attitude, as put forwarded by my low agreeableness and extroversion score. I do not get along well with most people since I am highly critical of
the incompetence of others and also maintain a healthy amount of suspicion of strangers' intentions. I also attest that my asocial behaviors do not

Personality Assessment Introduction I found the test results of the Big Five personality assessment to be an interesting and very accurate description
of myself. After completing this assessment, I was able to analyze my personality in depth. I found this information to be helpful knowledge and
provide insight about myself, as well as being crucial in examining my personality traits. The big five is also referred to the OCEAN model of

This personality test came out to be valid, measures what is says it measures, because it describes a lot about my personality. According to the test my
percentage for introvert ranged from 83%–94%, meaning I don't really socialize or get out much. A few years ago, there was a vehicle accident in
front of our house. I used to live in front of the highway so we've seen many accidents, especially during the winter, but this time was worse than
all of the others. It was around 1 a.m. when I heard a lot of banging coming from outside. I already knew it was an accident, so I hurried and put my

However, the questions were very straight and addressed directly. There was no calculation in the test that would make aperson think. Even a layman

Overall, I believe that the test was fairly accurate in measuring certain factors of my personality so much so that it was difficult for me to find certain
factors that I did not agree with. However there were two factors, E (dominance) and Q1 (rebelliousness), which I believe were a bit overrated in
myself. Aside from these the test seemed to adequately define facets of my personality. For "warmth" (factor A) my sten score read 4, indicating that I
am slightly more reserved and critical that easygoing and good–natured. I scored a 7 in "ego strength" (factor C), classifying me as more stable and
emotionally mature and less emotional and changeable in attitudes. In dominance (factor E) my sten score read 8, meaning I am more assertive,
competitive and stubborn rather than submissive, dependent and humble. I received an average score of 5 in "impulsivity" (factor F) indicating a
slightly more serious and sober approach to the world over the cheerful and enthusiastic view. As for "boldness" (factor H), I received a sten score of
4 signifying a more shy and restrained approach to things as opposed to an adventurous genial one. I received a median score of 5 for "emotional
sensitivity" (factor I) demonstrating my slightly more tough–minded and self–reliant view in contrast to a sensitive insecure one. For "imagination"
(factor M) a score of 8, indicating that I am more imaginative, unconventional and absorbed in ideas and am less so for practicality and the prosaic.

One team with Paul Costa and Robert McCrae, and the other with Warren and Lewis Goldberg. The two teams had different methods that they tested but in the end they both ended up with the same results. The results were that no matter what culture, race, or language people have their personality fits into five dimensions of personality. The five dimensions were created after reviewing lots of surveys and data analysis called factor analysis. Now, just forty years later the Big Five is one of the most commonly accepted personality models. Analyses shows that personality changes throughout life as different personality traits are used and forgotten. The results are generalized and don't always apply to people but typically the results are correct. The Big Five is a personality test asks questions about how you see yourself. Some questions were "I see myself as someone who tends to find fault with others" and "I see myself as someone who does things efficiently".
