Music magazines are one of the easiest forms of
media to find things out about the music industry.
The first ever music magazine was made in the mid
1950s once media had upgraded into more than
just a newspaper. Using colours and images, the
magazine became a public favourite. The top four
best selling magazines are ones like
Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stones, M
Magazine.
3. MAIN PUBLISHERS AND DISTRIBUTIONS
Like anything in the media, well known names hold a
reputation when it comes to publishing and
distributing music magazines to the best quality
they can be. Big names like Tommy Page and
Ralph J. Gleason take on the challenge of
publishing top magazines like Billboard and Rolling
Stones. Most publishers tend to have a nature of
artistic skills as they would need to think about the
audience and what would relate to them in order for
them to buy the magazine.
4. TEXTUAL ANALYSIS
All magazines use different conventions in order to
grab the audiences attention. Although they are
interpreted in different ways, it was what magazines
call the norm.
Headline
Instead of having it at the top, it is places
on the side and in front of all the
images, helping it stand out. This magazine
has the same logo for every magazine
although, sometimes it can be moved
around.
Images
The many different images used in this
magazine represent the Magazine’s
audience. These teen celebrities would all be
featured in this issue. The images appear in
layers, kind of like a collage which is a norm
for this magazine and its age audience.
Background
The background is a simple green background
with a few white stars, however the
background isn't that important due to the
images plastered on most of the cover. To link
into the Images, they seem to take up most of Sell line
the front cover, which seems to be a norm for The main sell line appears in the middle, whereas
this magazine. To fill the front cover with artists normally most sell times are towards the side. The font
and stars that will relate to the age audience. of the sell line also refers to the age audience as it is
child like.
5. Masthead
With this being a well known magazine, the mass
head had been covered by the image yet it is
obvious what magazine it is you are buying.
Main Image
The main image is a close up of an
artist who has an exclusive interview
inside the magazine, this is a main
selling convention.
Background
The black background enables the main
picture and other colours to stand out. With
the magazine being so popular, the use of a
background can change with each new
issue. With each magazine comes a new Sell Line
background colour, they never stay the The main focus is the coloured title of
same. They can change whenever they ‘Music’ and the main image, although there
want. are three small sell lines in the top right
Barcode corner going down the page separated by
Bottom left corner which is a normal convention the backgrounds pattern. The norm for sell
lines are too be noticeable, but with this
being a very well known magazine the
audience know what they are getting when
they buy this magazine.
6. Kerrang Content page.
Title
The title would show the audience what
page they are on. With the black
background it stands out more than the
white background.
Images
The use of different images on the
Contents page show the reader who is
on what page.
Subtitles
The subtitles are highlighted with a black
background to have the contrast of white and
black. Also so they stand out too.
Numbers Background
With the numbers on the contents page, the The background is plain white so it
reader can scan for the image they want and doesn't draw attention to it, so the images
then skip to that page without hassle. and other information is the main
information and eye catcher.
7. NME content page
Title
Due to there being a few different
colours on this page, the title is just
black in order for it stand out.
Images
These two pictures represent the
main article. The content page
doesn't usually have an article in it
but this seems to work fine.
Contents Information
The subtitles are in bold black
writing to separate them from the
small writing underneath each one
that explains the title. The
numbers are red to also separate
from the background but not more
than the subtitle.
Numbers
In order to separate the page number from
the writing explaining what is on that
page, they are written in red which also Advertisement
stands out from the white background. A small advertisement for the reader to
consider while reading the contents page on
the bottom right corner.
