2. What is ‘Going
Beyond’?
• Going Beyond is a new way forward for trade union
education
• TSSA is proud to launch this innovative and exciting
approach to education through the interactive and
experiential process of Communities of Practice
(CoP).
• Our calendar of events and activities will centre
around our CoP approach and will provide you with
engaging speakers, events and resources to
facilitate your learning.
• Each CoP will connect passionate, like-minded
individuals who will actively discuss, problem-solve
and innovate new thinking and approaches towards
the problems we are facing. The outputs from this
approach can then be applied within your context.
• Going Beyond will begin in 2020 and take us
beyond learning into real practical results.

3. Why ‘Going
Beyond’?
• TSSA is the union for workers in the transport and travel
industries. We recognise that every one of our members
and workplace representatives want to do the best they
can for their industry, including those already in
management or leadership roles to those who are aspiring
to become a leader.
• That’s why we have developed our ‘Going Beyond’
initiative that explores specific questions on key themes
including leadership, neurodiversity, addressing bullying &
harassment, mental health & wellbeing and representing
members.
• Our members will explore solutions whilst learning from
each other and contributions from experts in their field.
• Going Beyond is ideal for those who want to excel not just
in their technical field, but in their management and
representation of people, to build a railway and travel
industry for the future and strengthen a union that
supports everyone.

6. What can I
expect?
• When you join a Community of Practice you
will be committing to participate in the
community over a period of time and join one
of the TSSA online groups.
• Participation could be as simple as sharing an
article, attending an event, participating in a
message thread within your community.
• You will receive a regular communication from
TSSA outlining the learning opportunities for
your theme (i.e, Flexible Working). These will
include a variety of types of learning.
• Every so often you will be asked to reflect on
your learning and contribute ideas to explore.
• At any time you will be able to revisit learning
from your community and interact with
others to clarify or expand your learningwww.tssa.org.uk/goingbeyond
7. What is a
Community of
Practice?
• Communities of practice are groups of people
who share a concern or a passion for something
they do and learn how to do it better as they
interact with their ‘community’.
• CoPs recognise that learning doesn’t just happen
in a classroom or lecture style event, but through
informal interaction with colleagues and peers.
• In between the key training events will be
activities to connect and facilitate the CoP.
• Your learning experiences will range from self-
managed learning to facilitated events and
training.
• Examples of learning experiences include:
• Question and Answer sessions with experts
• Group problem solving, action learning
• Discussion and interaction with CoP members
• Analysing research
• Blogs, videos, social media posts

8. Spiral of
Learning
Each Community of Practice will have events that
follow a basic pathway, the ‘Spiral of Learning’,
that will lead to practical results
• Scoping defining the problem through
surveys, case studies, community interaction.
• Exploring Ideas at least 3-4 ideas for each
CoP theme will be explored.
• New Learning summarising key findings from
the exploring work done.
• Action Planning applying our learning to our
situations and problems to identify actions.
• Going Beyond using our learning to support
pilot programmes of work, campaigns to run,
policies to implement, research to conduct,
resources to develop.www.tssa.org.uk/goingbeyond
