Place Value and Problem Solving with
Units of Measure
Module 2: Lesson 11
Objective: Solve mixed word problems involving all
four operations with grams, kilograms, liters, and
milliliters given the same units.
Fluency Practice (11 minutes)
Rename Tens (3 minutes)
Materials: Hide Zero Cards (T) Personal White Boards (S)
Use Hide Zero Cards to quickly review place value
7 tens =______ Say the number that 7 tens equals.
Repeat using 8 tens, 9 tens, 10 tens
11 tens =______ On your boards, fill in the number
sentence.
Continue with the following possible sequence: 12 tens,
16 tens, 19 tens, and 15 tens.
Fluency Practice
Half Way on the Number Line (4 minutes)

What is half way between 0 tens and 1 ten?
0 ( 0 tens)
Fluency Practice
Half Way on the Number Line (4 minutes)
• Draw a vertical number line on your white boards.
Make tick marks at each end and one at the halfway
point.
Label the ends with 3 tens
and 4 tens and label the
halfway point.
Continue with 60 & 70, 80 & 90,
40 & 50, and 50 & 60.
Read a Beaker.
(4 minutes)
Draw a beaker with a capacity of 4 liters, with tick marks for 1,
2, 3, and 4 liters. Start at the bottom of the beaker and count by
1 liter. (move up from the bottom from 1-4)
Shade the beaker to show how much water it holds. Write the
capacity on your board.
Repeat varying the liquid height.
Repeat the process with a beaker partitioned into 10 equal
parts, filling in increments of 100 millimeters. Repeat again
partitioned into 2 equal parts, filling in increments of 500 ml.

Materials: scale, spring scales, digital scales, ml beakers, personal white
boards
Part 1: Solve word problems involving addition and
subtraction.
A pet mouse weighs 34 grams. A pet hamster
weighs 126 grams more than the mouse. Model
the problem on your boards.
Talk with your partner: Is there a simplifying
strategy you might use to find how much the
hamster weighs?

• 126 grams is almost 130 grams. We can use
the 4 from 34 to complete the ten in 126 to
make 130. Then its just 30 + 130.

30 + 4 + 126 = strategy help us solve
30 + 130 = 160 g similar problems
using mental math?

• As time allows, repeat the process.
• Judith squeezes 140 ml of lemon juice to
make 1 liter of lemonade. How many milliliters
of lemon juice are in 2 liters of lemonade?
• Robert’s crate of tools weighs 12 kilograms.
He takes his power tools out. Now the crate
weighs 4kg. How many kilograms do the
power tools weigh?

• Part 2: Solve word problems involving
multiplication
• A pitcher of shaved ice needs 5 ml of food
coloring to turn red. How many milliliters of
food coloring are needed to make 9 pitchers
of shaved ice red? Explain to your partner
how you would represent and solve this
problem. Go ahead and solve.

• As time allows, repeat the process
• Alyssa drinks 3 liters of water every day. How
many liters will she drink in 8 days?
• There are 4 grams of almonds in each bag of
mixed nuts. How many grams of almonds are
in 7 bags?

• Part 3: Solve word problems involving division
Let’s work in groups to solve the following
problem.
• At the pet shop there are 36 liters of water in
a tank. Each fish bowl holds 4 liters. How
many fish bowls can the shopkeeper fill using
the water in the tank?
• Go ahead and solve.

• As time allows, repeat the process:
• Every day the school garden gets watered
with 7 liters of water. How many days until
the garden has been watered with 49 liters?
• A bin at the grocery store holds 9 kg of
walnuts. The total value of 9 kg is $36. How
much does 1 kg of walnuts cost?

• If time allows, have students work in pairs to solve one-step
word problems.
1. Together an orange and a mango weigh 637
grams. The orange weighs 385 g. What is
the weight of the mango?
2. A rabbit weighs 892 grams. A guinea pig
weighs 736 grams. How much more does the
rabbit weigh than the guinea pig?

3. Twenty-four kilograms of pineapple are needed to
make 4 identical fruit platters. How many kilograms of
pineapple are required to make 1 fruit platter?
4. The capacity of a pitcher is 3 liters. What is the
capacity of 9 pitchers?
5. Jack uses a beaker to measure 250 ml of water.
Angie measures double that amount. How many
milliliters of water does Angie measure?

  • 1. Place Value and Problem Solving with Units of Measure Module 2: Lesson 11 Objective: Solve mixed word problems involving all four operations with grams, kilograms, liters, and milliliters given the same units.
  • 2. Fluency Practice (11 minutes) Rename Tens (3 minutes) Materials: Hide Zero Cards (T) Personal White Boards (S) Use Hide Zero Cards to quickly review place value 7 tens =______ Say the number that 7 tens equals. Repeat using 8 tens, 9 tens, 10 tens 11 tens =______ On your boards, fill in the number sentence. Continue with the following possible sequence: 12 tens, 16 tens, 19 tens, and 15 tens.
  • 3. Fluency Practice Half Way on the Number Line (4 minutes) 10 (1 ten) What is half way between 0 tens and 1 ten? 0 ( 0 tens)
  • 4. Fluency Practice Half Way on the Number Line (4 minutes) • Draw a vertical number line on your white boards. Make tick marks at each end and one at the halfway point. Label the ends with 3 tens and 4 tens and label the halfway point. Continue with 60 & 70, 80 & 90, 40 & 50, and 50 & 60.
  • 5. Read a Beaker. (4 minutes) Draw a beaker with a capacity of 4 liters, with tick marks for 1, 2, 3, and 4 liters. Start at the bottom of the beaker and count by 1 liter. (move up from the bottom from 1-4) Shade the beaker to show how much water it holds. Write the capacity on your board. Repeat varying the liquid height. Repeat the process with a beaker partitioned into 10 equal parts, filling in increments of 100 millimeters. Repeat again partitioned into 2 equal parts, filling in increments of 500 ml.
  • 6. Concept Development (39 minutes) Materials: scale, spring scales, digital scales, ml beakers, personal white boards Part 1: Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction. A pet mouse weighs 34 grams. A pet hamster weighs 126 grams more than the mouse. Model the problem on your boards. Talk with your partner: Is there a simplifying strategy you might use to find how much the hamster weighs?
  • 7. Concept Development (39 minutes) • 126 grams is almost 130 grams. We can use the 4 from 34 to complete the ten in 126 to make 130. Then its just 30 + 130. 34 g + 126 g = ? 30 4 How might this 30 + 4 + 126 = strategy help us solve 30 + 130 = 160 g similar problems using mental math?
  • 8. Concept Development (39 minutes) • As time allows, repeat the process. • Judith squeezes 140 ml of lemon juice to make 1 liter of lemonade. How many milliliters of lemon juice are in 2 liters of lemonade? • Robert’s crate of tools weighs 12 kilograms. He takes his power tools out. Now the crate weighs 4kg. How many kilograms do the power tools weigh?
  • 9. Concept Development (39 minutes) • Part 2: Solve word problems involving multiplication • A pitcher of shaved ice needs 5 ml of food coloring to turn red. How many milliliters of food coloring are needed to make 9 pitchers of shaved ice red? Explain to your partner how you would represent and solve this problem. Go ahead and solve.
  • 10. Concept Development (39 minutes) • As time allows, repeat the process • Alyssa drinks 3 liters of water every day. How many liters will she drink in 8 days? • There are 4 grams of almonds in each bag of mixed nuts. How many grams of almonds are in 7 bags?
  • 11. Concept Development (39 minutes) • Part 3: Solve word problems involving division Let’s work in groups to solve the following problem. • At the pet shop there are 36 liters of water in a tank. Each fish bowl holds 4 liters. How many fish bowls can the shopkeeper fill using the water in the tank? • Go ahead and solve.
  • 12. Concept Development (39 minutes) • As time allows, repeat the process: • Every day the school garden gets watered with 7 liters of water. How many days until the garden has been watered with 49 liters? • A bin at the grocery store holds 9 kg of walnuts. The total value of 9 kg is $36. How much does 1 kg of walnuts cost?
  • 13. Concept Development (39 minutes) • If time allows, have students work in pairs to solve one-step word problems. 1. Together an orange and a mango weigh 637 grams. The orange weighs 385 g. What is the weight of the mango? 2. A rabbit weighs 892 grams. A guinea pig weighs 736 grams. How much more does the rabbit weigh than the guinea pig?
  • 14. Concept Development (39 minutes) 3. Twenty-four kilograms of pineapple are needed to make 4 identical fruit platters. How many kilograms of pineapple are required to make 1 fruit platter? 4. The capacity of a pitcher is 3 liters. What is the capacity of 9 pitchers? 5. Jack uses a beaker to measure 250 ml of water. Angie measures double that amount. How many milliliters of water does Angie measure?
  • 15. Problem Set (10 minutes) You have 10 minutes to complete the problem set pages. Debrief (10 minutes) Let’s review your solutions for the problem set.
