UCL Outreach Horizons Success – February Half Term Workshops!
Monday 21 February 2011
Meet at 1.30pm Debating : Law and Order
Workshop 2-5pm GCSE – Yr 10-11 ONLY
Have you got what it takes to be a top lawyer? This is a
debating session with a special focus on law and order.
You will learn to construct a persuasive argument and
debate some key issues about law and order in Britain
today. If you want to study law at university, or want to
debate issues like the death penalty, knife crime and
criminal justice, sign up! This session got excellent
feedback by GCSE students in October.
You will be supported by UCL law students throughout
the workshop and offered a tour of the campus. The
students will be happy to answer any questions about
university life.
Tuesday 22 February 2011 Stand up maths (NEW!)
Meet at 1.30pm GCSE – Yr 10-11 ONLY
Workshop 2-5pm
Matt Parker is an award-winning stand up comedian
and mathematician. This session combines maths and
stand up comedy for a workshop that is fun AND
informative. The workshop looks maths in everyday
life, and some exciting magic tricks using numbers. You
will leave more confident with numbers and excited
about studying maths.
You will be supported by UCL maths students and
offered a tour of the campus at the end of the
workshop. The students will be happy to answer any
questions about university life.
Headliners Journalism (NEW!)
Wednesday 23 February 2011 A level – Yr 12–13 ONLY
Meet at 1.30pm
Workshop 2-5pm Stop press! This workshop is for you if you want to be a
journalist, or want to know more about media. You will
learn important skills for researching and writing stories
on issues that are important to you. You will also
discuss how young people are represented in British
media today. This course is run by an experienced
journalist.
You will also be supported by UCL undergraduates and
offered a tour of the campus at the end of the
workshop. The students will be happy to answer any
questions about university life.
2. Thursday 24 February 2011 Talking Enterprise
Meet at 12.30pm A level – Yrs 12-13 ONLY
Workshop 1-4pm
For aspiring Alan Sugars! This course will teach you how
important public speaking is in business – from
presenting yourself in front of a small team to pitching
an idea at a big meeting. You’ll improve your public
speaking, overcome stage fright and learn how to
present your ideas clearly. This workshop will finish in a
‘Dragon’s Den’ competition to show off everything
you’ve learnt!
You will be supported by UCL economics students and
offered a tour of the campus at the end of the
workshop.
Friday 25 February 2011 Drama - Devising and Improvising (NEW!)
Meet at 10.30am GCSE - Yr 10/11 ONLY
Workshop 11-3pm
Do you dream of being a Hollywood star? This session
will introduce ideas and skills to help you to create new
pieces of drama. It will also improve improvisation skills
and help you to feel more confident when acting and
performing. This will be helpful if you are studying GCSE
drama! The workshop will be run by an experienced
actor who can tell you about her experience working on
television and in the West End.
You will also be supported by UCL undergraduates who
can take you on a tour of the campus at the end of the
workshop. The students will be happy to answer any
questions about university life.

You must not sign up for a workshop unless you are 100% sure that you can and will
attend. Please check with your family for any personal events and make sure you are
not scheduled for conflicting school or extra curricular events before you sign up.
If you do not attend or cancel at short notice, you will not be able to register for any
future UCL activities, and we will contact your form teacher to advise them of your
failure to attend.
This may also affect future opportunities for students from your school.
