BLTs - The Behaviors of Learning and Teaching

Participants will explore the Behaviors for Learning and Teaching continuum, a tool that can help teachers to improve student motivation, engagement and empowerment, understanding and achievement. In this interactive session participants will explore the entire continuum through a jigsaw activity. After regrouping, participants will share out and discuss which learning behavior/element(s) would provide the most leverage in moving students toward college and career readiness in their academy.

Does your program provide a customized experience that connects to every student? This approach, known as “personalization,” is a key concept that aligns with and has real implications for all elements of the NAF model. Come hear how one of NAF’s model academies uses a student-centered approach while serving an urban population of traditionally underserved students. The session will show how smaller learning communities are succeeding in personalizing secondary environments and how they have contributed to raising student achievement nationally.

Job Shadowing - Immersing Students through Work-Based- Learning Explorations

Do you want to have a solid action plan for implementing job shadowing through work-based learning explorations into your academy? This session, presented by NAF Work-Based Learning Fellows, will provide your academy with the tools necessary to implement meaningful job shadowing events in the world of work, in which students can get first-hand information and real world job experience. Learn how a strong work-based learning plan can include meaningful activities, lesson plans and development procedures for utilizing your community businesses outside the classroom.

A Roadmap from High School to Engineering Colleges

This session will provide an overview of The NACME Guide to Engineering Colleges, which contains a comprehensive description of undergraduate engineering colleges in the United States. participants will discover how to best use this tool with parents and students who are applying to an engineering undergraduate program. Also, NACME has learned from its program operation experience that obtaining an engineering baccalaureate degree requires a multifaceted strategy. Scholarships alone don’t suffice. What is needed is a comprehensive engineering student strategy that creates a supportive academic community, while promoting a high level of collaborative learning and group study. Administrators from New Jersey Institute of Technology and Virginia polytechnic State University will engage with the audience about the skills needed and student support opportunities available at their respective institutions for success in an undergraduate engineering program.

NAF developed a next-generation assessment system designed to model real-world demands, including the integrated application of academic, career-technical and workforce readiness skills. Designed to bridge the gap among high school career-technical programs, post-secondary course articulation, admission policies and workforce readiness, Student Certification Assessment System (SCAS) assesses a broad range of content and skills through rigorous end-of-course exams and evidence-based portfolios combined with supervisor and teacher feedback. This workshop will discuss the processes and criteria for selecting and hiring interns at KPMG, one of the "big four" public accounting firms. During the workshop, KPMG presenters will share the firm’s resume review processes, interviewing protocols, selection indicators and hiring practices so that academy directors and advisory board members will be in a better position to prepare their academy students for these key internship positions. Tips for how to be successful on the job will be shared.
