Megan was often online chattingwith Allain after school. They werebecoming quite good friendsnow, even when he wasn’tbabysitting – or ‘hanging out’ asthey called it. Today he needed afavour, could he come round?
He was in a bit of ajam. He was meant tobe off sick, but he sawsomeone badmouthinghim on facebook sohad gone to school atlunchtime and beatenthe guy up a bit. Hewas bound to tell, sohe needed an alibi.Everyone at schoolknew Megan was oneof the only people heliked rather than justtolerated, and sawoutside school… So theheadmistress wasbound to call her intothe office to questionher. Would she lie forhim?
Megan agreed straight away. But on thebus to school the next day she startedgetting pretty nervous. She pridedherself on looking the part, but shewasn’t actually much of a bad girl. If shewas called into the heads office, wouldshe be able to pull it off?
Everything happened like Allain said itwould, but then he probably had plentyof experience with being in trouble.Megan tried to stay calm and ignore thebutterflies in her tummy.
Yes ma’am, she had heardabout the fight. But Jake Daweswas always making stuff up.Like the lies he put on facebookabout Allain in the first place.Or that he had an uncle whohad been to space. Why yes Ma’am, she had seen Allain recently. She’d been round his house to cheer him up but he’d been too sick to let her in so she’d just pushed the card under the door. There was no way he could have come to school to beat up Jake. She bet he’d run into a wall and had seen an opportunity to get Allain into trouble.
The headmistress believed her. Sheknew Allain was a bit of a wild card, but Megan was a good kid. Shewouldn’t lie about something seriouslike this. She let her return to class.
Megan left the office in a daze. She’dgotten away with it! Her heart wasstill beating fast, and her hands wereall sweaty… but it had worked.Back home after school, with moretime to think it over Megan wasthrilled. It had been so easy! Allainwould be impressed. And this couldbe only the beginning, she could doanything!
Ambrose was still upset over the lossof her agent, and her moping abouthad finally forced Bernice out of thehouse and into a job. She’d managedto get a place working behind the bara local dive.
After work, she’d often get chatting toeither the customers or the friendly copwho made sure last drinks were servedon time each night…
In fact, she was bringing a guy home after almost everyshift. She’d never really had time to date when she’dbeen caring for her parents 24/7. As she saw it, shewas making up for lost time.
But Ambrose was worried about her housemate. A bit of fun was one thing, butBernice could get herself into real trouble.
Bernice was careful about her choices though. The men were always happyfor a one night stand and nothing more. She avoided the vulnerable whomight want more, or get obsessive. In fact she was avoiding emotion of anykind. But was this making her happy?
