2. WHAT IS DEMOCRACY?
The term Democracy comes from the Greek words
domos (people) and Kratos (power).
In its literal meaning, democracy means the "rule of
the people".
It is a form of government.

politics (n.) – the process of debating, making laws, and running a
government
political (adj.) – relating to politics or the process of running a

RESPONSIBILITIES OF CITIZENS
A right is a protected freedom.
For example: citizens have the right to vote, the right to be
discriminated against, freedom of expression
Citizens have rights, and they also have responsibilities to respect
rights.
For example: to vote after doing research on the candidate or law, to
show respect for all people regardless of race, sex, ethnicity; and the
responsibility not to use hate speech
11. DEMOCRACY AND VOTING
Voting is not important to democracy- it is democracy itself.
The people of a democracy vote and make the decisions- elect
candidates and vote on laws.
In the US, you can vote once you turn 18 years old.

You must register to vote in your county, and you must have
official I.D.

14. CLASSROOM AS A DEMOCRACY
1. Students into 3 political parties (15 students).
2. Each party chooses one candidate for teacher
3. The candidate must write three reasons that citizens should vote
for her/him.
4. Each party creates 4 “laws” (classroom rules, rights,
responsibilities). Give your party a name!
5. The rest of the class are citizens, and each person must write 2
rules, rights, or responsibilities for the teacher. Whomever is elected
must follow these rules, or else the citizens will remove them.
6. Each party presents its laws.
7. Each candidate presents their reasons.
8. Vote for a candidate!
