Gas absorption, also known as scrubbing, is a process where a gas mixture is contacted with a liquid to preferentially dissolve one or more gas components into the liquid solution. There are two main types of absorption: physical absorption where the gas forms a physical solution with the liquid, and chemical absorption where the gas reacts with the liquid. A packed tower is commonly used for gas absorption, where the gas and liquid flow counter-currently through structured or random packing materials to facilitate mass transfer from the gas to the liquid phase. The efficiency of gas absorption is affected by factors such as gas solubility, volatility, corrosiveness, cost, viscosity, channeling, loading, entrainment, and flooding.
