3. Outline:
• Definition of confined space
• Activities of confined space
• Risks and hazards of confined space
• Control of Hazards in Confined Spaces

4. Definition of confined space
Definition:
• A space with limited entry and egress
• Not suitable for human inhabitants.
Confined spaces areas:
• Enclosed on all sides
• Small/Difficult to work in
• Hard to get out of
“under the health and safety at work act 1974, employers must ensure the safety of their workers and others, a duty which is regulated in further
detail by the confined spaces regulations 1997”

5. Activities of confined space
Dangerous causes of working in confined space:
• Noxious fumes
• Reduced oxygen levels
• Risk of fire
• Flooding/drowning
• Asphyxiation from some other source
“assess the risks of the particular confined space and plan how you will control those risks”
5
6. Dos of working in confined spaces:
• Be aware of the risks that may occur within a confined space.
• Make sure the person doing the work is capable and trained in both
the work and the use of any emergency equipment.
Activities of confined space

7. Don'ts of working in confined spaces:
• Work in confined spaces unless it's essential to do so.
• Ignore the risks – just because a confined space is safe one day
doesn't mean it will always be.
• Let others enter a confined space until you are sure it's safe to do
so.

8. Risks and hazards of confined space
• Lack of oxygen
• Gases, fumes and vapors
• Flooding
• Dust
• Fire and explosions
• Temperature
• Access restrictions
8
9. Control of hazards in confined spaces
Hierarchy of Controls:
• Hazard elimination
• Hazard substitution
• Engineering controls
• Administrative controls
• Personal protective equipment
9
10. More control measures:
• Safe system of work developed through risk assessment
• Method statement
• Control measures and
• Confined space permit to work
