2. Stimulation of flowering
Introduction:
Trees do photosynthesis to produce their
food. These food are utilized for physiological functions, some
for growth and some for the production of flowers and seeds. If
the tree crown is small it will produce less food which will be
utilized for survival and growth and in this case the flowers and
seeds are not appeared. But when the tree produce the large
amount of food which is sufficient for growth and survival and
also for the production of flowers and seeds. To stimulate the
flowering in the tree the following methods are adopted. These
methods stimulate the flowering but results in the death of the
tree.
1. Girdling Method:
Girdling, also called ring-barking is
the complete removal of a strip of bark (consisting of cork
cambium, phloem, cambium and sometimes going into the
xylem) from around the entire circumference of either a branch
or trunk of a woody plant.
Girdling or bark ring incision can reduce vegetative growth
and promote reproductive growth, which results in increased
flower numbers, fruit retention and yields
2. Root Pruning:
It is the process of cutting back
long roots to encourage a tree or shrub to form new
roots closer to the trunk. When we prune the root system of a
tree the growth of a tree stops. The food material prepared by
the crown remains in the leaves as a result of which flowering
3. occurs.
3. Tighting a Wire:
if we tight a wire or steel band
around the stem of the tree that will also decrease the supply
of food from the crown to the roots. As a result of which
flowering occur.
4. Changing The Position Of Branches:
Usually
branches are at 45 to 50 degree from the stem but if we bend
them so that the become parallel to the ground level. In this
more flowers are produced.
5. Grafting:
Grafting to a rootstock will also result in less
amount of movement of food from the scion to rootstock due
to the disconnecting of xylem and phloem cells.
6. By Thinning:
If we thin an area there will be less
competition of water, nutrients and soil between the plants, as
a result of which more CHO are produced. With this reason
flowers appear.
7. By Addition Of Fertilizer:
Some fertilizers are
introduced into the soil which induce the flowers. If we add N2
to very poor soil the plant growing in this soil initiate flowers.
