Introduction
Groundwater Importance
Formation of Leachate
Composition of Leachate
■ Impact of leachate pollution on
Groundwater Supplies
■ Health Impacts due to Leachate
Contamination in Groundwater
■ Mitigation Measures
4. Importance of Ground water
■ Groundwater is utilized my human for many activities (Drinking, Agriculture etc.)
■ 60% of total groundwater is used for Agriculture purposes
■ Domestically we almost use 24 to 39% of the total groundwater
5. Formation Of Leachate
■ Leachate is the liquid that drains or 'leaches' from a landfill
■ During draining it absorbs many dissolved and suspended Matter
■ Causes significant threat to surface water and groundwater
Figure Shows The Mode of Leachate Pollution From Landfill Site (Aziz,2013)
6. Composition of Leachate
■ Composition of Leachate depends on the type of Waste landfill recives
■ Landfill Leachate comprised of 4 types of contaminate Group which are following
1. dissolved organic matter (alcohols, acids, aldehydes, etc.),
2. inorganic macro components ( cations and anions including sulfate, chloride, iron,
aluminum, zinc etc.
3. heavy metals (Lead, Nickel, Copper, Mercury etc),
4. xenobiotic organic compounds such as halogenated organics, (PCBs, dioxins, etc.)
8. •Made groundwater unfit for drinking
purposes due to hazardous components
•Due to high salt content can increase the
water salinity
•Increases the BOD of the groundwater
and reduces the DO
•Can cause Heavy Metal contamination
Also cause Plume contamination and effect
the water quality of the wells near the
landfills

14. ■ Leachate pollution in many regions has led us to a path where the groundwater has been disturbed to a
diminishing point
■ The contamination of the groundwater is harmful for the ecosystem because groundwater is the major part
of the water cycle
■ Not only environment, it also impacted the human health via consumption of contaminated drinking water
■ Deaths due to leachate pollution in developing countries are way higher than developing countries
■ Many contraries are doing their best effort to control this type pollution but we need more measures for
properly canceling its impacts
