2. Growth
•The measurable physical changes of the whole body
or any of its parts that occur throughout a person’s
life.
•It is simply a quantitative change in the child’s body.
•Examples: height, weight, body shape, dental
structure (teeth)

3. Development
•Development refers to changes in intellectual,
mental and emotional skills that occur over time
•It is a qualitative change in the child’s functioning.
•It can be measured through observation.
•examples: Think, maturation.

4. Types of Growth and Development
Types of growth:
- Physical growth (Height, Weight etc.)
- Physiological growth (vital signs )
Types of development:
- Motor development
- Cognitive development
- Emotional development
- Social development

5. Principles of Growth & Development
•Continuous process
•Predictable Sequence
•Don’t progress at the same rate
•Not all body parts grow in the same rate at the same time.
•Each child grows in his/her own unique way.
•Each stage of G&D is affected by the preceding types of
development.

6. Four main types of Growth and
Development
•Physical – body growth that includes height and weight
changes.
•Mental – intellectual development, problem solving
•Emotional – refers to feelings and includes dealing with love,
hate, joy, fear, excitement, and other similar feelings.
•Social – refers to interactions and relationships with other
people.
