2. Introduction
Some sustainable crop production practices that
have been developed due to limited land
space or poor soil quality for crop growth
and development are:-
• Greenhouse farming
• Hydroponics
• Tissue culture
• Rooftop farming
• Indoor farming
• Organic farming
• Container gardening

3. Greenhouse farming
Greenhouse farming is an
environmentally controlled house where the
moisture, temperature and nutrients are kept
at an optimum level for growth.
Advantage of Greenhouse farming
• This allows a variety of crops to be grown.
• It can be used where the soil is poor.
3
4. Tissue culture
Tissue culture is used to artificially cultivation of
plants from a plant cell, tissue, or organ medium,
under sterile conditions, A new plant can be
regenerated from a single cell under right
nutrient formulated media.
Advantage of Tissue culture
• A large quantity of crop can be produced.
• Desirable characteristics in crops
• Produced in relative short time.

5. Hydroponics
Hydroponics is growing plants in nutrient-
rich solutions with water as its base. It
does not require soil. Plants may be
suspended in the solution or supported by
clay pellet, peat moss or gravel.
Advantage of Hydroponics
• No soil is required.
• It produces great yield in limited space.
• It reduces the spread of soil-borne
diseases and pests.
5
6. Container gardening
Container gardening is growing food
crops and herbs in containers, e.g., gallon
water bottle, half-barrels and tubs. The
containers contain soil and does not need
ground space for planting.
Advantage of container gardening
• Uses when outdoor space is limited
• It allows for reuse of containers and
therefore reduce pollution .
• It can beautiful and add style to the
environment.

7. Rooftop farming
In rooftop farming crops are grown on flat rooftops using a range
or combination of growing techniques such as container garden,
greenhouse farming and hydroponics. This method uses general
underutilised space.
Advantage of rooftop farming
• Uses underutilised roof space.
• Reduce heat from the building
• Improve air quality in urban area
