An international financial institution

income countries for developments
in areas such as education, health,
public administration, infrastructure,
financial development, agriculture
and environmental management.
Such projects are co-financed with
governments, other multilateral
institutions, commercial banks,
export credit agencies, and private
sector investors

4. 1944 – Idea conceived as IBRD at Bretton Woods Conference
1940s – Rebuild and support countries after WW2
1950s & 1960s – Funding of large infrastructure projects
1970s – Shifted attention to poverty eradication
1980s – Enlarged focus on all aspects of social development
Since its establishment, the World Bank has funded over 12,000
development projects across the globe.
And today, it has 189 member nations, staff from 170 countries and
offices in 130 locations.
