In this presentation, Neha discusses a concept called Electromyography, which she wants to use to the domain of home automation. Having already worked on Image processing, she is looking forward to applying those concepts to detect myo signals.

2. INTRODUCTION
Electromyography (EMG) is an electrodiagnostic
medicine technique for evaluating and recording the
electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles.
Myo Literally means ‘relating to muscles’
Wide applications in Human-machine interface after EEG
(‘measurement of electrical activity inside the brain’)
Flex sensors and 9 axis IMU (Inertial measurement unit)
senses the motion and orientation of hand.
3. OUTLINE
EMG Signal acquisition
(muscle activity) using
EMG sensors or Flex
sensors ,9-axis IMU unit
EMG Signal pre-
processing (Noise
removal and
smoothening)
Conversion of gestural
data and spatial data
(processed signal) into
electrical signal
Wireless transmission
using bluetooth module
or other device.
Decode electrical signal
to find out hand gesture
(Using ANN algorithms
like back propagation and
feature extraction)
Relay connected will be
accordingly driven
(based on the decoded
gesture)
4. CURRENT TRENDS IN HOME AUTOMATION
Few technologies in today’s smart home automation include:
Automated door locks and security systems: these can be
controlled with a smartphone to other electronic device
Temperature and ventilation controls
Energy consumption monitoring devices
Entertainment systems
Smart lighting systems
Smart appliances
Vehicle detection systems
Plant and pet monitoring systems
Room-to-room video and audio communication
5. TRENDS IN THE PROPOSED WORK
Imagine a particular situation where a person sitting down
below the fan want to stop the fan by his clenched fist .
Imagine a situation where a person walking into the room
just waves his hand and switch on/off all the appliances.
From household chores to office ,this technology may
affect the lifestyle of each and every individual.
6. INTEREST AREAS
I would like to work upon signal processing part where I can
implement algorithms of artificial neural network to decode the
myo signal.
Since I have a background in image processing and fundamentals of
computer vision, I would like to take advantage of it.The platform I
used is ‘MATLAB’. I would like to work on OpenCV as it is an open
source platform.
I am also working on automated fracture detection for particular
bone .It would be great if I can apply concepts of segmentation and
principal component analysis for feature extraction in this work.
Moreover I would like to work upon the acquisition and pre-
processing part. I have worked on minimization of bit error rate and
mean square error of a signal, so I would like to make use of it.
