2. ABOABOUT WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5, annually to encourage awareness and
environmental protection. According to the United Nations, "the celebration of this day
provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and
responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises, and communities in preserving and
enhancing the environment."
The day is celebrated by engaging governments, businesses, celebrities and citizens to focus
their efforts on a pressing environmental issue.

Ecosystem restoration
3. HOW WE SEE? – MAY BE WRONG?
• NORMALLY ENVIRONMENT IS DEFINED AS THE THINGS
SURROUNDING US.
• THIS MAKES THE HUMAN AS CENTER ANTHROPOCENTRIC
VIEW
• THE ACTUAL PROBLEM LIES HERE
• WE NEVER REALIZE WHAT IS OUR PART.
“Healthy ecosystems promote healthy life.”
4. “When we reconnect with nature., we
will restore ourselves”- Lailah Gifty Akita
Reimagine. Recreate. Restore. Together, these form the theme of World Environment
Day 2021 on 5 June, a day when the UN seeks to focus the attention of investors,
businesses, governments and communities on the increasingly urgent need to restore the
Earth’s ecosystems.
World Environment Day: We need to now fundamentally rethink our relationship
with the living world, with natural ecosystems and their biodiversity.

RESTORATION ON A PEDESTAL
5. Ecosystem loss is depriving the world of carbon sinks such as forests and
peatlands at a time we can least afford it: Global greenhouse gas emissions
have risen for three consecutive years.
The emergence of COVID-19 has reminded us just how disastrous the
consequences of ecosystem loss can be: The destruction of animals’ natural
habitats creates ideal conditions for pathogens such as coronaviruses to
spread.
So, it is timely for this year’s World Environment Day to coincide with the
launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, a global mission running
through 2030 to protect and revive billions of hectares of valuable and much
needed natural capital, from forests and farmland to the ocean.
6. NEED FOR RESTORATION ECOLOGY
Ecosystem restoration at a global scale is important if we are to mitigate the extent of the ecological crisis
that we are currently facing, and protect the biodiversity for future generations. Our food systems and the
revival of forest and agrarian crops depend on healthy soils
Threatened species in India (IUCN red list)
The world loses enough forest every three seconds to cover a football
pitch and over the last century over half of our wetlands have been
destroyed.

7. HOW CAN WE GET INVOLVED IN RESTORATION
Putting species back on the landscape can be like putting all of the pieces of a watch on a
table and expecting it to work. There are complex interactions, such as resilient food webs
and nutrient cycles, that need to resume in a restored environment.
One way to restore function is to recreate disturbance regimes, or episodes of temporary
environmental change, that encourage historical succession patterns. For example, setting
controlled burns clears underbrush, and in some plants, encourages growth or seed
dispersal. In rivers, releasing large amounts of water from a reservoir pushes sediments
downstream.
We can also help out with restoration activities in our community. Many restorations
involve labor-intensive activities like removing invasive species or collecting native seeds for
planting. The Society for Ecological Restoration, for example, holds "Make A Difference Day"
events in various communities.
8. BEYOUND TREES: THE NEW WAY FORWARD FOR
INCLUSIVE ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION
Individuals have an integral role to play in ecosystem
restoration through right lifestyle choices and raising public
awareness.
Making smart choices like buying only sustainable
products and changing diets.
Raising your voice in support of ecosystem conservation
and restoration.
One of the best ways to contribute to environmental
restoration is to help reduce the need for it in the first place.
Recycling materials, such as paper and plastic, will reduce
the harvest of the raw materials used to create these
products, such as trees and petroleum.
9. SOME OF THE
ENVIRONMENTALIST
Sunderlal Bahuguna
One of the most famous of environmentalists in
India is Sunderlal Bahuguna, propagator of the
Chipko Movement. The highly successful
environmental conservation program that was
accomplished with the help of the locals is a stark
reminder of how stature becomes powerless in the
face of persisting unity.
It is a man-made disaster. When you try force
change nature and its landscape, it gets back
and punishes you. – (Sunderlal Bahuguna)
10. THE EDUCATION SYSTEM SHOULD BE LIKE
THIS, EVERY KID SHOULD BE ASKED TO
PLANT TWO TREES – (JADAV PAYENG
(FOREST MAN OF INDIA))
Jadav Payeng
The Forest Man of India, Jadav Payeng is a
famous environmentalist in India. Hailing from
the North eastern state of Assam which is an
abode of greenery, Payeng has over the
course of several decades planted a forest on
a sandbar of the river Brahmaputra. Named
Molai forest after his name Jadav ‘Molai’
Payeng, this unique initiative earned Payeng
the honor of being bestowed with the Padma
Shri
11. “The realization that the most important thing for the human species is to root
ourselves back into the natural world” Sir Tim Smit, Co-founder of Eden
Project. “One of the big lessons coming out of COVID is that people suddenly
listen to science again, as if their lives depended on it – because it does!
“People are always asking: ‘What sort of planet we are leaving to our
children? Wrong question, the question to be asked is: What sort of children
are we leaving in this planet?” Sir Tim Smit, Co-founder of Eden Project.
