Introduction
• Geography is one of the oldest earth
science and its roots date back in the
works of the early Greek scholars.
• The word ‘geography’ was first used by
the Greek scholar Eratosthenes in the
third century B.C.

• Geography is one of the social sciences.
• It is a dynamic subject.
• Every day we make use of the knowledge of this
subject.

Concept
• Geography has been defined differently through different
periods of its history.
• Geographical work in ancient Greece had followed two
distinct traditions.
• One was the mathematical tradition which was focused
on fixing the location of places on the earth’s surface.

• And the other was gathering geographic information
through travels and field work.
• According to them, the purpose of geography was to
provide a description of the physical features and
conditions in different parts of the world.
• The emergence of regional approach in geography also
emphasized the descriptive character of geography.

Meaning
• Geo ‚ Earth‛ and Graphy ‚to describe‛
• The word geography can be broken into the two basic
parts "GEO" and "GRAPHY‛. GEO + GRAPHY
• Literally In other words ‚Geography is largely the study
of the interaction of all physical and human phenomena
and landscapes created by such interactions.‛

• It is about how, why, and where human and natural
activities occur and how these activities are
interconnected.
• Means, "to write about the Earth."
• Literal meaning of geography is to describe about the
earth’s surfaces.

Definition
‚Geography is the description of the world &
of its inhabitants‛.
‚Geography is the science that describes the
earth surface with particular reference to the
differentiation and relationships of areas‛.

Example of Geography in daily life.
• The natural phenomena like mountains,
rivers, lakes etc. change slowly
• While the cultural elements like buildings,
roads, crops, change fast.

Nature of Geography
• It study various features of earth surface namely,
mountains, hills, plains, plateaus, volcanoes.
• It study natural and physical environment and how these
environment affect life of mankind.

• It deals with a changing man and ever changing
environment.
• It discusses the distribution of any one element over a
given area.
• It deals with the various areas of earth surface which are
different from one another.

• Geography has now acquired the status of
science
• It explains the arrangements of various natural
and cultural features on the earth surface.
• Geography is a holistic and interdisciplinary
field of study.

• Studies soil and structure of earth.
• It is source for other branch.
• It split into number of sub-branches.

• This concerns production and
distribution of the raw materials in
the country.

HUMAN GEOGRPAHY
• It covers the evolution of mankind, its
different races, their distribution and
man’s adaptation to environments.

POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY
• This branch deals with the
Government of States and Countries.

CARTOGRAPHY
The term is applied to the conception,
the design and the execution of maps of
the art of drawing maps and charts.

URBAN GEOGRAPHY
It brings clear focus to the concepts of
location, interaction, and accessibility as well
as distribution and movements of population.

ANTHROPOGEOGRAPHY
• The study of the distribution of human
communities on the earth in relation to
their geographical environment.

AGRICULTURAL GEOGRAPHY
• Helps to know how particular kinds of
farms and farming systems have developed
in particular areas and how they are
similar to or different form the farms and
farming systems of other areas.

  • 3. Introduction • Geography is one of the oldest earth science and its roots date back in the works of the early Greek scholars. • The word ‘geography’ was first used by the Greek scholar Eratosthenes in the third century B.C. Pedagogy of School Subject Geography 3

Concept • Geography has been defined differently through different periods of its history. • Geographical work in ancient Greece had followed two distinct traditions. • One was the mathematical tradition which was focused on fixing the location of places on the earth’s surface.   • 6. • And the other was gathering geographic information through travels and field work. • According to them, the purpose of geography was to provide a description of the physical features and conditions in different parts of the world. • The emergence of regional approach in geography also emphasized the descriptive character of geography.   • 7. Meaning • Geo ‚ Earth‛ and Graphy ‚to describe‛ • The word geography can be broken into the two basic parts "GEO" and "GRAPHY‛.
