TOURISM REGION 1
3. Destination of banana and nature
agricultural nature, with marine access
through Almirante Bay from Bocas del
Toro. The road connection to the rest of
the country is made from the Pan-
American Highway at the height of
Gualaca in Chiriquí and with the border
with Costa Rica in Guabito. It includes a
portion of the La Amistad International
Park (PILA), the Palo Seco Protected
Forest and the San San Pond Sak
Wetland. This destination has options to
develop nature tourism, ecotourism and
adventure, combining the possibilities of
the sea and the continent.
CHANGUINOLA
4. A trip to this humedal (wetlands) is a full
day eco-adventure. Typically the goal
and highlight of this journey is to see the
Manatees, but you’ll encounter other
abundant wildlife. We begin early,
departing off our dock around 7AM for a
boat trip to Almirante. Once there,
you’ll ride in a cab past the town of
Changuinola to this protected
area. You’ll start with an orientation
talk by the incredible work the rangers
and volunteers do to help save this
precious wetlands ecosystem. You then
set off on a small boat down the San San
River where your guide will point out
local wildlife, including many species of
birds, green iguanas, sloths, caiman and
others.
SAN SAN POND SAK WESTLAND
5. The Palo Seco Protected Forest, with an
extension of 254,445.88 hectares was created by
Executive Decree No. 25 of September 28, 1983,
published in Official Gazette 19,943 of
November 24, 1983. The area is part of the set
of protected areas located in the highlands of
Panama, together with the La Amistad
International Park, the Fortuna Forest Reserve
and the Barú Volcano National Park. Its varied
habitat serves as a refuge for a great diversity of
flora and fauna species, including numerous
endemic highland species.
The relief of Palo Seco Protected Forest is due to
the central mountain range, which runs through
the western half of the country, from west to
east, with altitudes greater than 3,000 meters
above sea level (meters above sea level). In the
region, important river basins are located, such
as the Changuinola, Chico, Chiriqui Viejo,
Cricamola and Fonseca rivers, which are among
the most abundant in the country.
PALO SECO PROTECTED FOREST
6. The park area is equally split
between Costa Rica and Panama, as
part of the former La Amistad
Reserves of the Talamancamountain
range. It covers 401,000 ha of
tropical forest and is the largest
nature reserve in Central America;
together with a 15 km buffer zone, it
represents a major biodiversity
resource at a regional (ca 20% of the
region's species diversity) and global
level.
This is recognized in its strategic
position in the Mesoamerican
Biological Corridor and its
designation as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. Its cross-frontier
position gives it unique potential to
improve bioregional planning. The
park’s buffer zone includes coffee
and beef producers and indigenous
subsistence farmers. As a
consequence of the difficulty of the
terrain, the park is relatively
unexplored and the only substantial
scientific explorations deep into the
park have been led by the Natural
History Museum London, INBio and
the University of Panama in the last 6
years (2003–2008).
LA AMISTAD NATIONAL PARK
13. • Located on the northern Caribbean coast of Panama is the magical
destination of Bocas del Toro.
• The archipelago has 9 main islands, 52 cays, and thousands of islets.
• Bocas del Toro has a totally different culture from the rest of the country, in
every aspect: the food, the music, the architecture and the history of Bocas
are unmatched in the national context
• …..just as is its ethnical composition, that has generated its own language,
the guari-guari, with variations depending on the island or town, which is a
mix of West Indian English, Spanish and indigenous words that, back in the
day, was dominant in the area.
