ABSTRACT
MIFTAKHUR ROHMAN: Improving Vocabulary Mastery Using Multimedia at
the Fourth Grade Student of SDN Kedungrejo 2 Tanjunganom Nganjuk in
Academic Year 2011 – 2012, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education,
UNIVERSITY OF NUSANTARA PGRI KEDIRI 2012.
Key Terms: Vocabulary, Multimedia and Young learners
To teach language needs stategies that influence the success of teaching
learning process. In this case the problem that is faced by the students of SDN
Kedungrejo 2, Tanjunganom is that lack of vocabulary. They cannot remember
the vocabulary being taught and they cannot focus in the lesson during teaching
learning process. In line with the problem above, multimedia is chosen as a media
to solve the problem because multimedia has some advantages that can solve the
problem. The purpose of this research is to find out whether multimedia can
improve the students’ vocabulary ability and describe how the students’ response
is during teaching learning process while multimedia is used to improve the
students’ vocabulary.
The classroom action research is applied in the fourth grade students of
SDN Kedungrejo 2 to solve the problem faced by the students during teaching
learning process. It aims to increase the students’ vocabulary ability in learning
English especially in meaning and spelling. The model that is used in this
classroom action research by Mohamad Asrori involved four steps namely
planning, implementing, observing and reflecting.
After the teacher applied teaching using multimedia, the average score of
the students increased. The result of the 1st cycle the average score of the students
was 60,736. In the 2nd cycle the average score of the students increase up to
65,631. In the 3rd cycle the average score of the students increase up to 79,000.
Students’ interest and motivation is high in learning English after teaching
learning process using multimedia. It can be concluded that the usage of
multimedia can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery.
By doing this research, the researcher suggests to the English teacher to
use multimedia as an alternative strategy in teaching vocabulary in the classroom
because the students will be interested in learning vocabulary. Teacher should
have a good media to teach English vocabulary in elementary school students. She
or he has to attract the students’ interest and motivation in learning English to
improve the student’s mastering vocabulary. It can be done by using media which
suitable with the material given.
Hopefully this research will motivate the English teacher in teaching
learning process by using multimedia and the students will be interested in
learning English subject.
