Background:
1961-1969: Served 5 year apprenticeship in Queensland Railways. Attended
Central Technical College night school, graduated with honors every year, and on
conclusion. I then worked 3 years as an electrical journeyman. I worked in
maintenance, design and construction capacities.
3. 1969- 1970: Electrical sub-contractor in remote mining sites. I worked on
installation of electrical generating equipment and associated switchgear,
overhead lines and buried cables, performing the tasks from conception
through commission.
1970-1977: Worked as System Controller in 100 megawatt power utility in Mount
Isa, Australia. I was responsible for load control, load shedding, trouble
shooting, and high voltage switching, reporting directly to the Operations
Manager.
2010-2013. Rig Inspection Services. Multiple rigs and locations, as
detailed below.
2012-2013: Supervise SCR repairs and commissioning, drilling equipment, remove
and replace all drilling motors for overhaul; Re-furbish all LeTourneau cranes;
inspections on all jacking and skidding motors; upgrade and commission fire and
gas systems; repairs and commissioning to Mitel rig telephone system; re-furbish
rig monitoring system; carry out sundry projects in preparation for delivery to
Alaska. This project was 10 months in duration and encompassed all rig systems.
Rig Endeavour, ex Adriatic 11.
2012: Supervise crane upgrades, hazardous area compliance upgrades, rig
monitoring upgrades, rig lighting upgrades, troubleshoot main generator
problems and instruct rig electricians on various aspects of the job. Transocean
jack-up Trident 16 in Sembawang Shipyard, Singapore.
2011: Survey all equipment for pre- contract survey. Checked all EMD generators,
SCR equipment, 480 volt load centers and transformers; checked fire and gas
4. systems, general alarm and other safety systems and shutdowns; checked jacking
and skidding system and controls; checked cranes and anchor winches.
Transocean jack-up, Harvey H. Ward in Johore.
2011: Lead surveyor on pre-overhaul survey. Inspect and test all onboard
electrical equipment, instrumentation, fire and gas and all communication
equipment, all jacking equipment, motors, brakes and controls. Ross Hill SCR
drive system, traction motors, controls and cabling. Transocean rig Key Hawaii, in
Bahrain.
2011: Repair and re-commissioning of fire and gas detection systems; repair and
test general alarm circuits; mitel telephone and rig paging systems; installation of
upgraded monitoring systems. Key Gibraltar, Keppel Fels shipyard, Singapore.
2011: Survey and testing on 6.3KV generators and transformers. Opened all
generators and performed PI tests on all windings and on all transformers.
Installed temperature monitors on all transformers and calibrated. Upgraded
ventilation system. Drillship Noble Phoenix, Keppel Shipyard, Singapore.
2011: Lead Surveyor on Ready to Drill survey. Our brief was all equipment except
sub-sea equipment, which was a separate survey. Transocean drillship,
Deepwater Expedition, in Johore , Malaysia.
2011: Surveys on land rigs, in East Kalimantan and Central Java. These were all
detailed surveys, and were all required for contract confirmations.
2010: Oversaw transportation, re-furbishing, witnessed and certified testing of
transformers at a Singapore facility for Century Drilling at Megawatts,
Singapore.
2010: Supervised multiple work crews, up to 7 crews at a time, during major
upgrade. Replaced, upgraded, installed and commissioned a majority of onboard
equipment. Ensured work was done safely, competently, and in compliance with
DnV requirements. Co-ordinated and witnessed third party testing where
required. Transocean Drillship Deepwater Expedition in Sembawang Shipyard,
Singapore.
5. Rig Experience.
2004- 2010: Chief Electrician, Compact Driller. Work Areas: Thailand.
Installation, repair and maintenance of all onboard systems. I was
responsible for all AC power systems from generation through switching to
end use. DC power from SCR generation to motors and control. We
rebuilt, changed out and otherwise maintained all onboard air conditioning
units, and brought the rig to the forefront in the use of synthetic, ozone-
friendly refrigerants. I am considered an authority on Le Tourneau cranes,
jacking and anchoring systems, and associated controls. I maintained,
repaired and installed all rig instrumentation, both analog and digital
formats, and all communications equipment from rig monitoring systems
thru satellite communication. In addition, I trained my National electricians
daily, bringing their proficiency level up to where they could confidently
work alone, and some have gone on to become Rig Electricians with
international standing.
2001-2004: Senior Electrician, Key Gibraltar.
Work Areas: Vietnam, Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia.
6. Installation, repair and maintenance of all onboard systems. I was on
the rig for a major refit when all electrical systems were replaced, supervised
contract electrical crews for the whole period of the installation, and was closely
involved in the testing and commissioning of all systems before leaving the
shipyard. I worked the rig for 1 year after the shipyard and was responsible for
getting the bugs out, and making this rig the efficient unit it is today. This rig has
several PLC controls, and I am proficient in the troubleshooting, testing and
repair of this equipment.
1993-2001: Senior Electrician, Galveston Key.
Work Areas: Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam.
When I joined this rig, it could not drill for more than 2 hours without
problem. Primarily through the efforts of my Indonesian electricians and myself, it
was transformed into an efficient drilling machine. Duties included maintenance,
repair and installation of all onboard equipment. Installation of modern
instrumentation and CCTV derrick cameras were conceived and built on board.
Air conditioning systems were reconfigured, repiped, condensors were replaced
and re-located for efficiency, and cranes had cabins installed instead of using the
remote controls which were standard equipment. My duties included training of
local electricians to a high standard ,to the point where they eventually were
meant to take over .
1989-1993: Senior Electrician, AleutianKey.
Work Areas: Indonesia, Singapore.
This rig was a Second Generation Pacesetter enhanced semi-
submersible, and I was responsible for the repair, installation and maintenance of
all power systems, both AC and DC, in addition to propulsion units, winch
7. controls, sub -sea cameras and controls, rig instrumentation, ballast controls and
communications. I was promoted to Senior Electrician when it was an earned
promotion, and not just an adjective affixed to all Rig Electricians.
1987-1989: Rig Electrician, Helmerich and Payne.
Work Areas: Colombia, SA.
Land rig and heli-rig operation. Maintenance and repair of drilling equipment
and camps, rig moving either by truck, river barges or helicopter depending on
seasonal weather. Worked on multiple rigs, as required.
1982-1987: Electrical Supervisor, Meta Epsi (Medco) Drilling
Work Areas: Indonesia.
Land rig and heli-rig operations, both SCR powered or Ward Leonard DC drive
systems. Maintenance and repair of all equipment. Design and construction of
power and controls for extra mud pump operation. Design of fail-safe anti-flash
circuit for generators. Design submitted to GE who acknowledged its value by
using it, but never did pay any royalties for it. Worked on multiple rigs and
systems.
1979-1981: Rig Electrician, Robray Drilling Co., Singapore.
Work Areas: Egypt, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia.
Worked on tender-assisted drilling packages, platform rig, heli-transportable
land rigs. Maintenance and repair of all equipment.
8. 1978-1979: Rig Electrician, Brinkerhoff Maritime Drilling.
Work Areas: Indonesia.
Repair and maintain all onboard equipment. This was my entry level oilfield
job, so had a steep learning curve. I worked on a drilling barge and a platform
tender. This was an excellent formative experience. Equipment was dated DC-DC
drilling equipment, not relevant to today’s equipment, and instrumentation was
basic and practically non- existent.
