WASTE MANAGEMENT CASE STUDY - FENWAY PARK AND THE TOTAL RECYCLING PROGRAM
Fenway Park and Waste Management’s Total Recycling
Program Hit a Home Run
Since opening its doors in 1912, generations of baseball fans have flooded into Fenway Park to watch the
Boston Red Sox. For over 10 years, Waste Management has managed all waste services for the Boston Red
Sox. In an effort to make Fenway Park more sustainable, the Boston Red Sox formed a partnership with WM’s
Total Recycling Program (TRP) in 2013.
Waste Management helps customers reduce waste and increase landfill waste diversion through its
comprehensive environmental solutions program, management and strategic implementation. The Total
Recycling Program assists customers with achieving landfill waste diversion goals through many waste,
recycling and organics initiatives such as facility-wide material assessments and characterizations,
stakeholder engagement, all-inclusive training and education, and innovative proprietary environmental
reporting.
With millions of devout fans visiting Fenway Park annually, the Boston Red Sox are aggressively pursuing
many sustainability goals to make their venue a champion of sustainability.
“Waste Management’s Total Recycling Program has been an important resource to the Boston Red Sox as
we strive to meet our waste-related sustainability goals,” said Chris Knight, Manager of Facilities Services
and Planning. “Their experience and expertise has helped us improve and advance existing initiatives such as
single-stream recycling, as well as introduce new initiatives including composting of food waste.”
Through the partnership with the Boston Red Sox, Waste Management successfully expanded organics
collection in June 2015 from the three main kitchens to all 44 suites in Fenway Park. As a result of all waste,
recycling and organics initiatives, 31 additional tons of organic waste were recovered for composting, trash
was reduced by 37 tons, and single-stream recycling increased by 41 tons since 2014. Overall, for 2015,
398 tons of material were diverted from the landfill and 914 tons of waste were converted to energy. As
a result of our waste and recycling efforts at Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox received the competitive
MassRecycle’s 2015 Recycler of the Year Award in the business category.
By applying an extensive array of customized services, collaborating with all stakeholders and analyzing
customer performance and waste data metrics, the Total Recycling Program enabled this storied sports
organization to refine operational efficiencies, identify opportunities for improvement and be in a position to
better manage costs. It’s a home run for both business and the environment.
The recycling efforts in 2015
conserved:
1,516,560 kW-hrs of electricity
Enough to power 145 homes for a year
2,091 mature trees
Enough to produce 25,903,029 sheets
of newspaper
1,219,540 gallons of water
Enough to meet the fresh water needs
of 16,260 people
1,599 cubic yards of landfill airspace
Enough airspace to meet the disposal
needs of a community of 2,053 people
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
