What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product?
By Michael Rumble
Why our product shouldn’t be produced by a Hollywood studio
I believe that our product would benefit more if it was
made as an independent film as in Hollywood
thriller/suspense films are the 5th most popular film
genre and while the majority of them are rated PG-13
there are still plenty of R rated thrillers that our product
has drawn inspiration from.
Another reason that I feel our product would benefit
from being an independent film would be the use of
lesser known actors would improve the immersion of
our film as most people wouldn’t be able to link the
actors to any other media product than our film.
Our film relied heavily on our visual style to set the atmosphere of our film. During the opening sequence to our
film, before the jogger is seen running along the beach. We can see that the weather is bright and sunny which is
juxtaposed to the tone of the rest of our film as it suggests that the city where the film takes place could one day
be turned into a place that doesn’t live in constant fear. The rest of our film has the traditional “doom and
gloom” feel that runs predominantly with modern day thrillers.
Opportunity for franchises?
Our product doesn’t offer an opportunity for franchises as a franchise would exhaust the intellectual property
of our product and it would become stale. Another problem with franchising our product is that it would take
the focus away from our film and towards other products. It also creates a feeling among the views that our
product exists only to make money and not to tell a story.
Here are some films that exist solely to make money and, while they do
this very well, the IP which seemed new when it was first released
however now the films are mainly just more of the same.
