The Dark Knight Rises opens with a group of armed men on a small
plane with one group of men holding guns and wearing a military
uniform and holding guns which suggest that they of high importance
and the other group of men have their hands tied behind their backs
and have black sacks over their heads.
This is revealed through a medium shot in which one of the military
men reveals that he is CIA and that he only needs one of the three
masked men and that he will let one of the men live if they tell him
about their leader who is known as Bane.
This questionable action is often associated with thrillers as the CIA
agent who is supposed to be a “good” is willing to throw someone out
of a plane and this creates tension as it suggests that Bane is a well
known figure among the criminal underworld.
A diegetic, ambient sound of wind can be heard when one of the
military men opens the door to the plane while it is in mid flight and
the CIA agent picks up one of the men and after asking him about
Bane, he shoots the gun near his head to make the other men think he
has been killed.
An extreme long shot has been used here to show most of the plane
and the man who thinks he is about to be thrown out of the plane.
A shot reverse shot is used when the CIA agent is talking to another
masked man who spoke to him about pretending to shoot the other
man and after taking off the mask he is revealed to be Bane himself.
This scene is accompanied with complete silence other than Bane’s
distorted voice as he tells the agent that nobody cared whom Bane
was until he put on the mask.
This creates tension as it makes Bane seem mysterious and
intimidating and it also reveals that not only is Bane a very large
man, he is also very intelligent.
