Be open to off the field as much as
game events as your story focus
What’s your conceptual story structure?
Be a great writer not just someone
who lists play-by-play
10. The sidebar story
It accompanies the game story. It might be
written right after the game summary
or the next day.
It should focus on one aspect of the game:
a player, play, incident or event in the game.
11. MISTAKES = LOSS: Crucial errors cost Falcons dearly
Mike Schlabach / Atlanta Journal Constitution
September, 1999
In their last 20 games, including three playoff contests in last
season's improbable flight to the Super Bowl, the Falcons have lost
three games. Not surprisingly, Atlanta has committed more
turnovers than its opponent in all of those defeats.
In Sunday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings, the Falcons lost
three fumbles, committed two costly pass-interference penalties
and missed two field goals, including one that could have tied the
game with 3:38 left.
“It was definitely a team loss, because we contributed in
every phase of our football team,” Atlanta coach Dan Reeves said.
“We missed the field and special teams had a fumbled kickoff, which
them excellent field position. We didn’t get the job done.”
12. Overall, it was not a mistake-free performance that was a
trademark of last season’s 14-2 squad.
A closer look at Atlanta's comedy of errors, which led to the
Falcons losing at home for the first time in 12 games:
-Turnovers: Quarterback Chris Chandler set the tone early in
Atlanta’s second series. On third-and-11 at the Falcons’ 38, Chandler
was sacked…
-Penalties: Atlanta was flagged four times for 84 yards,
including two pass-interference infractions that led to both
Minnesota touchdowns.
13. Find a sidebar story on your football
team from your go-to sports news
website.
Come back in 15 minutes and tell us
about that story.
14. Sidebars offer the write a chance to
delve into a topic not in his game
summary or expand on something he
did write about in the game summary.
A sidebar is not a pure analysis story
nor is it a column.
15. Find a story focus that makes your
sidebar relevant, on-topic and
interesting for the reader.
Add something in your sidebar
that isn’t in your game summary.
