45. What has Changed Between this year and
last?
• I know way more people
• More sure of my pitch
• Taken on more responsibilities
• More successful follow-up
I requested one extra seat for January and 2 extra seats for December
1 didn’t tell me he went on onward
Two declined their offers
Two cancelled because of family vacations
I feel really good about this season.
Last year 63 UMass students went on our campus trip and this season 75 are going
I requested 3 additional seats because there was so much interest
Registration opened on the first day of class which caused a slow start in registration numbers
Both keeping my interns and myself motivated has been challenging. I love Birthright and believe in it completely, but sometimes it is hard to stay motivated to recruit for it
This job has only continued to get easier the more people I know on campus and coming back for this second year has really shown me that.
In the past managing my interns has been one of my challenges, but I changed the way I managed them and incentivized their payment and it really worked well
I wanted to beat my numbers from last year, and I have myself the goal of getting 10 more participants than last winter and I got 12 more UMass students to register
While I haven’t hit the 80% mark yet, but I feel really good about the follow-up that has been happening and that is planned
Once registration officially closes I want to plan 3 or 4 recruitment events for next semester. I found I didn’t do very many this semester because I didn’t plan and schedule them in advance, so I want to figure all of that out earlier
Most of my interns are studying abroad but I want to invite the two who aren’t to continue next semester to keep continuity. I haven’t had an intern roll over in the past
I want to put more of a focus on pre-registration this semester than I have in the past. That way, I will already have tons of people in the system even before registration opens in the spring
I reached out to each alumni about the people they referred and asked them questions about the people and also had them speak to them. I have so many more resources and so many more people to share posts, tag in posts, etc.
We have 6 guys from aepi on the trip this winter, including the president. 3 of my 6 interns are in different sororities. Continue to build the aepi relationship- aepi nationals and local chapter- met with moosh, rosh hashanah, aepi specific events
I am continuing to build the relaitonship I have with JLB and 6 of them are registered for Birthright this winter
Three in greek life, one involved in outdoors stuff, one already involved in Hillel before the trip, a few work at the gym
They got 175 dollars if they recruited 3 people, and then an additional 20 dollars per person after the 3
We only tabled 3 days a week and in the off time I gave them each 60-70 names from our interest list to call and text. I am not sure how effective tabling is, so I decided to cut it back and see what happened. Less tabling kept their morale up. The focus on individual outreach really helped.
Successes
They are all outgoing and connected in different ways
Different Jewish backgrounds and involvements
Challenges
Some more motivated than others
Some better connected than others
Those who aren’t as well connected really showed enthusiasm and passion, so it ended up being ok they weren’t so well connected.
I had never met Sasha before Birthright
She came to high holiday meals and services
Signed up to do a three part class that I am teaching
Has showed interest in getting back to Israel
Rachael was also never involved in Hillel before
Post trip she became a Birthright intern
Applied to go on JNF this winter
Applied to become a hasbara fellow in the summer
We work really well together and created a good curriculum and activities for the summer that we’ll continue building on
We have the three day extension for the first trip and we were approved by Israel Outdoors for soldiers for all 10 days on the January trip
We will have our reunion shabbat dinner
We received a grant for Jewish learning Fellowships so we will be focusing on Birthright alumni for the class
I will most likely run my 3-part IACTx class again
I don’t want to plan too much in advance because I want to see where their interests lie
Valentina and I have a shared google doc where we are tracking our follow-up
Red are those who haven’t come
Blue have come to 1 event
Yellow 2 events
Green 3 or more
We have written out the events in the future they have said they are coming to and who will reach out for a coffee date
Valentina and I invited everyone from our trip to her house for a falafel dinner and we have an Israel identity activity planned
I set up a paint night for my second bus for early November, the artist is creating an Israel themed painting
They each have to come to three events before Birthright and they have to email me when they go.
I have a spreadsheet tracking the events they come to
Now I know tons of people and can use my relationship with them to convince them to come on Birthright
Last year I came in knowing nothing, so now having a full year under my belt I know exactly what I need to say and do to get people to register
Since I have the hang of follow-up and recruitment I am able to plan more events- the BRI extension, spring break trip, teaching classes, JLF next semester
Last year we had follow-up events, but not many people came. This year the events have been way more successful and have had more content.
