2. 1950’s Horrors
• 1950’s horror films were based on social events such as the cold war,
this was a catalyst for films such as Godzilla and the blob which were
films based on giant figures/characters attacking, which links to USA
vs Russia.
• It also involved mythical beasts such as dinosaurs and vampires.
• The poster involved a lot of colours and bold text to attract the public
to watch the films.
• The stereotypes were mythical creatures.
3. 1960’s Horrors
• The 1960’s horror films reflected the social revolution, they were
more edgy than the 1950’s and featured controversial levels of
violence.
• The 1960’s were more about people being murdered, were as the 50’s
were mythical giant creatures battling.
• The posters and films also involved more women in the films were as
the 50’s didn’t.
• 1960: "Peeping Tom“, "Psycho“
• 1963: "The Birds“, "Black Sabbath“, "Blood Feast"
4. 1970’s horrors
• The 1970’s was the era of the Vietnamese war, which made violence
increase and horror films were more violent, almost the next step
from the 1960’s, more violent and involved more sex .(exploitation
films)
• It showed stereotypes of mass murders such as the chainsaw
massacre and jaws killing mass amount of people.
• The posters were more dark and mysterious showing the films had a
more evil feel.
• Jaws, Texas chainsaw massacre, alien, the exorcist, Carrie, are all films
from the 1970’s.
5. 1980’s horrors
1980’s Films consisted of the horror genre of slashers in the early 1980’s, but as the 1980’s progressed
into a more light hearted, comical approach to horrors. It also involved quite a lot of stalker films in
this era where the killer would stalk and kill there victims
Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Return of the Living Dead, Aliens, Predator.
The posters had a dark sinister approach, which also followed the films having more a lot more gore
and violence in it than ever before, intertextualities involved they were both dark and involved
stalking and mass murders.
6. 1990’s horrors
• Scream, se7en, ghost, candyman and Jurassic park.
• The early 90’s put the horror genre up level it was like never before with a lot of
the public choosing it as there new favourite genre, it gained a lot more publicity
and it was the new in trend genre with a lot of money being pumped in to the
industry.
• The stereotypes in this era of horror were ghosts and mythical characters which
links back towards the 1950’s yet it had a lot more of sinister and gory scenes in
the films.
• The posters were a lot more down to earth they had real people in as it was a
much more calm horrors like ghosts instead of mass murders.
7. 2000’s horrors
• 2000’s had a lot of horror film types it went from the more comical
horrors, to violence and horror which we have never seen before
example of this is saw which involves extreme torture porn and
gruesome torture to themselves.
• The film posters involved more gruesome things like hands instead of
ghosts or killers.
• Saw, Zombieland, the grudge, 28 days later, final destination were 5
films from the 21st century.
