What is Physics?
Physics is the science of
matter and its motion—
the science that deals
with concepts such as
force, energy, mass, and
charge.
BRANCHES OF
PHYSICS
MOST FUNDAMENTAL
PHYSICS CONCEPTS
1. CLASSICAL MECHANICS
(THE LAWS OF MOTION)
 Newton laid out and explained the three
fundamental laws of classical mechanics:
 Objects at rest will remain at rest, and objects in
motion will remain in motion at the same velocity,
unless the object is acted on by an external force.
 Force equals mass times acceleration (F=ma)
 When one object exerts a force on another object,
the second object exerts an equal and opposite
force on the first.
2. ELECTROMAGNETISM
 Electromagnetism is defined as an attraction
between particles which is defined as created by
electricity. An example of electromagnetism is the
force which is the basic operation of an electric
motor.
 Electromagnets are used in all kinds of electric
devices, including hard disk drives, speakers,
motors, and generators, as well as in scrap yards to
pick up heavy scrap metal. They're even used in
MRI machines, which utilize magnets to take
photos of your insides!
3. RELATIVITY
 Everything is moving relative to everything else,
hence Einstein's theory of relativity. It is known as
special relativity because it applies only to special
cases: frames of reference in constant, unchanging
motion
 Relativity comes in two forms, Special and
General. ... Special Relativity is the theory that no
matter what constant speed you're travelling all the
laws of physics are the same. General Relativity
says that being at rest in a gravitational field and
accelerating are physically identical.
4. THERMODYNAMICS
 Thermodynamics, science of the relationship
between heat, work, temperature, and energy. In
broad terms, thermodynamics deals with the
transfer of energy from one place to another and
from one form to another. The key concept is that
heat is a form of energy corresponding to a definite
amount of mechanical work.
IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICS IN OUR
DAILY LIFE
 Pulleys are used to lift heavy loads.
 Electricity is used to get light, heat and mechanical
energy that drives fans and electric motors.
 Means of transportation such as cars and airplanes,
domestic appliances such as air conditioners,
refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, washing machines,
and microwave oven, etc.
 The means of communication such as radio, TV,
telephone, and computer are the result of applications
of physics. These devices have made our lives much
easier and faster and more comfortable than in the
past.
 The computer is the invention of physics.
