Unheard Abuse
1. By Luke du Preez
Treatment for idea 1
Working title
My working title for this film is going to be ‘Un-Heard’. I think this would work well with my
chosen theme of abuse because they are all alone and no one can help. This may change
later if I think of something more suited for my film.
Length of film
I would like the length of my filmto be no more than 10 minutes. I think that it is important
to make the film no longer than 10 minutes because I don’t want to add to much
information and risk losing the viewer attention. However, it needs to be a decent length so
I can get all the information I want to say to the audience.
A short filmtagline
My tagline is going to be ‘love hurts more than pain’. This will work well with my short film
as it gives a brief overview of the script and how the film will pan out.
Introduction of key characters
My key characters in my filmis firstly going to be a young vulnerable girl called Molly who is
23 years old and who is dating her first person. She works as a babysitter to get away from
her abusive boyfriend. She wants to follow her dreams of becoming an artist, but he won’t
let her. The other key character is going to be a middle-aged man aged 25 who is called Ian
who has been Molly boyfriend for the last 2 years. This man has a very dominant effect over
Molly as he is an army veteran who has PTSD but doesn’t want to admit it. He becomes
angry whenever Molly tires and helps him (bad dreams) and normally lashes out at her.
Synopsis
Act 1
It is 2019. Molly who at this time is a single 22-year-old who is looking for someone to love.
She finds someone who seem nice on tinder and meet up and start dating after falling in
love. The scene cuts to Ian who is 25 leaving 7 months later on his first deployment with the
army to Afghanistan for 8 months.
Act 2
8 months later Ian returns and when they first meet, she is happy to see him, but he doesn’t
seem all that happy to see her and be back at home. She had prepared welcome home
banner and dinner, but he struggles to deal with it all. He goes up to the bedroom to try and
unpack his stuff and he comes across some blood of one of his fallen friends. Molly walks in
to try and tell him to come and eat but he gets angry with her for walking in on him and
screams at her to get out which is a side Molly has never seen before of him. He ends up
going to the pub and leaving her in the house while she is left crying. That night he returns
home very late and Molly is already asleep in the bed. He then gets into bed but starts
getting bad dreams about his tour with the army and how he could have saved his friend

(PTSD). Molly tries to wake him up to try and comfort him after he is groaning but Ian wakes
up and ends up knocking Molly out in fear. The film then cuts to the next morning where
Molly has a big bruise on her face.
Act 3
Through out the coming months Ian grows sick of Molly and starts to verbally abuse and not
let her see her friends and family which leads onto physical abuse such as bruises on her
arms. One-night Ian goes to the pub leaving Molly locked inside the house. Molly is so upset
she can’t handle life anymore and ends up getting the bleach out the cupboard and goes up
to her room. She then starts to have flashbacks of the days with her family in the sun loving
life to the full. Ian then returns home from the pub later that evening but decides to go in
with a different approach getting her flower and tickets to go and see a movie after seeing
another happy couple in the streets. He enters the house looking for Molly but can’t find her
anywhere. He then sees a light on in the bedroom and opens the door and then the film
ends with his reaction of seeing her dead but ever showing the audience her body and
leaving them on a cliffs edge weather she would survive or not. He also has a flashback to
finding his friend dead as well.
Target Audience
I think that my film is going to be aimed at a young but mature audience that will
understand the message the film is trying to put across so aged over 15. The filmmay be
distressing and too violent for younger viewers so is why it is not aimed for them to watch.
Also, the filmwill try and connect through the audience with dramatic scene which will
bring emotion to the audience through the actor pain and hurt in the film from abuse. Some
people may be able to connect with her so will have an emotional connection to the film.
Furthermore, it could also be aimed at people that are new to relationships so they can find
out the sign to look for when things are going to far. I would say that this filmcould also be
aimed at anyone on the NRS scale as this type of event could happen to anyone so therefore
this film appeals to a wider range of people.
Form and style
In this short film I will be using a normal filming canon camera which is provided for us.
However, I will also be using a go pro to capture certain shoots such as a shot where the
camera is attached to the side of the car while it pulls into a driveway. Also, I may also use a
drone to capture a possible suicide scene on an edge of a cliff which could be really
effective. Also, I want to make the filmseem as real as possible so capture some point of
view shots in order to make it feel like you are the character in the film. In addition, I also
want to capture the character pure emotion in the film and show the audience how they are
really feeling. Some parts of my filmwhere the girl friend will be getting abused will need to
feel dark to make it feel like she is totally alone in this struggle against her boyfriend. This
will really build tension for what will happen to the girl and will make it fell dramatic and will
convey my theme of abuse and genre of drama very well.

Market Place
I think this filmwill work well as a sequel for another film. I want to leave the film on a cliff
hangar so would work well for this idea. I think it will also do well posted on YouTube so it
can easily be accessed by everyone as it is free to watch. It also could be aimed at post 16
education for students to watch and learn from the mistakes the girl made in the filmand
the signs to look out for. I don’t think that this filmwould do well at festivals because it will
be quite a sad depressing filmand festivals are normally happy exciting places so therefore
would not be the right market for this film to be aimed at.
