Practical & Technical
problems
Equipment
There is a range of equipment I will be using to film
and produce my trailer, all of which could cause me
multiple issues. The equipment I plan to use in my
project are:
- 700D Canon Camera
- Tripod
- Audio recorder
- Battery for camera
- SD card for camera
- Boom microphone
This is the equipment I will be using if lockdown
doesn’t happen if it does instead I will mainly be
using my phone to capture footage and audio as I
will not have access to the equipment above. If
lockdown does not occur the issues I will have with
the equipment are problems such as, The camera
could run out of battery during filming, the tripod
could break and I wont be able to stand my camera
on anything, the audio camera could run out of
battery or it won’t pick up the audio well, there
might not be any storage on the SD card and the
boom microphone might break and it won’t pick up
ant audio. I will have to find different solutions to
overcome these problems in order for production
to work out well.
Research
There is a lot of problems that could happen in my
research for my project for example, the links I have
included in my research that I will later come back to
further in my project to help me might not work, to
solve this I will have to create a bibliography so I know
where the link came from and what it was in case I
forget. There might also be some research I missed that
could help me a lot when it comes to production, so
when I go back to my research I will add more things
that will help me when it comes to the actual
production of my project so looking at filming and
editing techniques etc…
Props
Most the props I will be using I will be ordering online, mainly
from amazon. The problems I could have for this are the
props that do come might be not what I ordered or what was
advertised on the website which could create problems in my
production not having the right props. I might also order the
props too late so they don’t arrive in time for filming. To solve
this when I order the props I need to look at the reviews to
make sure it is the right product I am ordering, and once I
have the list of props I need for my trailer I need to order
them as soon as I can so they arrive in time for filming. Money
might also be an issue, also if I’m never going to use these
props again I’m going to have to look at cheaper products so
I’m not spending all my money on props.
Storage
Storage could be a problem during production, if I
am filming on location and need to take all my
props, equipment and other essentials with me
then I will need a lot of storage. If I can’t fit
everything in storage then it will be a problem as I
might forget something during the day of filming,
so I need to make sure I have enough storage to
take everything with me as well as carrying it there.
Power
If I’m filming in the dark on location and relying on
street lights for the main source of lighting in my
film, the power might go out in that street and I
won’t be able to film anything because it’s too dark.
To solve I will need to bring some backup lighting or
if I’m trying to film in the dark then I can do it at a
time of day where it’s not too dark but it’s not too
light either so it will give it a grim setting. I also
might have problems with the power when I’m
editing my footage together or making my poster
because my computer could shut down and I won’t
be able to do anything to fix this, I will need to save
my work regularly when editing so I don’t lose any
of it in case there is a power outage.
Ability
When it comes to ability such as the actors performances
and filming there might be some problems. I know the
actors I have chosen to star in my trailer took drama class
but they have never acted in front of a camera and their
ability to act might be effected because of the camera, to
solve this I need to make sure my actors are comfortable
and are able to act. Someone could show up on the day ill
as well which can also effect their performances I am also
getting someone else to help me film so if they are ill that
could effect their ability on that as well. Also I will be
showing the person helping me film how to use the camera
as well so hopefully if they do what I say they will be able to
film the scene to a good standard.
Software
The software I plan to use to make my
project are premiere, photoshop and
adobe audition. I have had problems with
these before on other projects such as
when I’m in the middle of editing the
software all of a sudden crashes and I
need to restart the computer, I always
save my work after I add something to it
on adobe so if it does shut down my
work will be saved. Also in case lockdown
happens I have found websites similar to
adobe that will allow me to edit and
make my project.
Backing up
When doing my work for my FMP if I
don’t save it then I could lose all my
work, so whenever I do anything
towards my project I need to keep
saving it regularly so I don’t lose it. I
could also lose my memory stich which
has all my work on so I need to
remember to keep backing my work up
on both my memory stick and
computer so if I lose one my work will
still be saved on another. I also need to
keep adding it to my website or slide
share so I have all my work on there as
well.

Theoretical Problems
Filming outside
There is a lot of potential issues that could occur while
filming outside such as:
- People getting in the way of filming, if I’m filming
in a public location then some people might walk
in front of the camera or makes lots of noise when
I’m filming.
- Weather conditions, such as rain, sleet or extreme
winds can effect filming and possibly damage
equipment
- Temperature, if it’s cold or really warm while
filming the cast needs to be in costume and the
costume might not fit the temperature conditions
- Lighting, if I’m filming in the dark the lighting could
be bad and the footage could be hard to see.
To solve these problems I think it all depends on the
time of day I film, if people are getting in the way of
filming I need to look at going on location when it’s
less busy so preferably around night, with the weather
conditions before I plan a day to film I need to look at
the weather forecast ahead of time, that way I can see
if it will be cold or warm so I can tell my crew how to
dress ready for the day and so the weather doesn’t
effect filming. With the lighting I will ne filming in the
dark sometimes so I will need to bring my own lights
and not rely on streetlamps.
Unwanted noise
A problem I can face while filming and collecting
audio is collecting unwanted noise as well. I think this
will mostly effect my production when I film outside
because when I record the audio I could pick up a lot
of wind, cars or people noises that will effect my
audio. This can also happen when I’m just recording
the dialogue and not filming I need to find a place
that captures the voices nice and clearly so it doesn’t
echo or gets disrupted by anything. When I’m filming
outside I plan to collect the audio after I am filming
so it doesn’t get disrupted by anything and you can
hear what the characters are saying more clearly.
Actors and Crew
On the day I plan to film an actor could be sick and unable to
come, or lockdown would have been enforced meaning that I
can’t meet up with my actors and crew to film accept from one
other person outside my household. This is why I will be acting
as the main character in my trailer in case this does occur and I
have planned to have one of my family members film some of
my scenes because I know I can rely on them and I am allowed
to meet up with them. Originally I planned to have around 4
people in my trailer, if lockdown does happen hopefully I can
get away with meeting 2 other people outside my household
and stick to being 2 metres apart from each other. Otherwise I
will need to reconsider how many people will feature in my
trailer and if it’s still doable to make. If not I will keep the same
Crew Dynamic
A potential problem I could have is if my crew
doesn’t get along with each other and which
causes arguments while filming which delays my
production. When I chose the people to help me
produce my trailer I chose people that I knew
would get a long with each other. If there is a
problem on set with one of the crew members
not getting along then I would ask them to leave
and find someone else that can either play their
character or help me film, luckily I don’t think I
will have that problem with the crew I have
chosen because I know they get a long with each
Location & transport
The main location I plan to film my trailer is my house
and the park near it, the potential issue I can have with
this is when filming at the park there’s a lot of kids
around so I will have to choose a time when there isn’t
and because the park is mainly grass I will have to film
on a dry day because when I set up the camera
equipment it might get muddy if the grass is damp as
well. A potential issue I have filming at my house is, if
lockdown happens then I’m not allowed people from
outside my household in my house so I will have to only
use the character I am plying to do scenes in my house
with and I might be able to have some people in my
garden if lockdown happens to film so I can film out
there as well. Transport might be a problem with a
couple of my crew because they live further away but
they have their own drivers license to get here, and
because I am only filming near my house there wont be
much transport needed to travel.
Finance
For my trailer I will need to buy props and costumes, a
potential problem I can have with this is if the props I
am looking at are too expensive and I go over the
budget I will set myself. To solve this if the prop I have
found is too expensive then I will need to look at
cheaper options or go on different websites to see if I
can get a cheaper deal. I will also have to set a realistic
budget for myself so if the price all together goes over
it I will have to rethink on buying certain props and if
they’re needed.
Production time
A potential problem I could have with production is running over time
and not getting everything filmed and put together by the deadline. To
make sure this doesn’t happen, I have created a schedule to stick to
during my production, so I have given myself a certain amount of days
filming and a certain amount of time editing. If I need to go back and re
shoot then I will have to do that in my own time if needed so I don’t take
up any of my editing time and if I stick to that schedule I should get
everything done in time to a good standard.

Theoretical problems
(continued)
Toilet facilities
A potential issue I could have during production is if there isn’t
any toilet facilities and one of my crew members might need the
toilet. To solve this issue I have made sure the places I plan to
film are in walking distance from my house, so if any of my crew
does need the toilet then they can use the one at my house as
it’s only a 2 minute walking distance. However if lockdown is in
effect at that time and they are not allowed in my house,
Hopefully filming will last just over an hour so if they need the
toilet I will have to tell them to go before they come.
Refreshments
A problem I could have when filming is if any of my crew get
dehydrated or hungry and they didn’t bring any drinks or
snacks. To solve this I will remind them to bring water and
snacks in case they do get hungry or dehydrated and if they
forget they I will bring extra drinks just in case so this doesn’t
disrupt filming and all my crew is comfortable.
Job roles
A problem I could have with job roles is if my crew forgot
what role they are dedicated to, or they don’t feel
comfortable in that role. If they forget what role they are
chosen for I will have written down everyone’s role in my pre
production and sent it out to all my crew so they don’t forget.
If they don’t feel comfortable in the role I have dedicate them
on the day then I will see if they could swap roles with
another crew member or try and make their role more easier
for them by helping them out in it.
Health & safety
A problem I can have with health and safety is one of my
crew members could get hurt, this could be because of
equipment laying around and them tripping over it, or the
location I am filming at the weather could be bad and they
could slip if it’s raining or because I am filming in a park
some kids could be playing around with a ball that could
hit one of my crew or the equipment. To avoid these
problems, I will make sure any of the equipment set up
isn’t a hazard to my crew so they don’t trip over it, If it
rains and my crew could slip then I will tell them in
advance to wear shoes with good grips on or I will re
schedule my filming day to avoid the rain. If there is kids
playing football, I have planned to film my trailer at night
to avoid pedestrians but if there is kids playing around
with a ball that could damage equipment and hurt the
crew then I will have to tell them to keep the ball and
everything away from where we are filming.
Pedestrians
A problem I could have during filming is if
pedestrians get in the way, they could ruin the
audio I will try and capture or they could get into
the shot, To make sure this doesn’t happen I plan
to film at a time when my location isn’t busy,
which will be at night, The main location I will be
filming at is my local park which I know is almost
isolated at night so I won’t have any problems
with pedestrians getting in the way of filming.
CAMERA PROBLEMS
Aperture problems
Problem- When filming aperture is where the light filters through the camera, and it is very important to use when filming as it controls how much light
enters my shot. If my aperture breaks while filming then that would be a huge problem as I wont be able to control the amount of light that gets through to
my shot, and as I am making a thriller and to set that genre I need to control how dark and light my scene is. If it’s to bright I won’t be able to convey the
right atmosphere to my audience, if it’s too dark my audience won’t be able to see what is going on.
Solution- To solve this issue before I use the camera I will first check that everything works, including the aperture, shutter speed, and the camera lens.
However, when filming something could happen to the aperture so as a back up I will try and book out a spare camera in case the aperture breaks, so I can
continue filming on the other camera and just put the SD card into the backup one so if I have filmed any footage it will still save onto the card.
Camera breaks
Problem- If I’m in the middle of filming and the camera falls of the tripod it could break, which means I would have no camera to film and I would be fined.
The camera could also be broken before I use it as well, so if I don’t check the camera before I film I won’t be able to film anything and I would also be fined
as college might think I was the one who broke it.
Solution- To solve this when I put the camera on the tripod I need to make sure it is one secure so it won’t fall off, this also applies to when I am holding
the camera I need to make sure I have a firm grip on it so it doesn’t fall. Before I take the camera from college I need to check everything over first, so the
camera lens, SD card slot, aperture and everything to make sure it works, if it doesn’t then I need to tell my tutor and get a new camera.
SD card problems
Problem- A potential problem I could have with the camera is if the SD card I have to save and transfer my footage doesn’t have enough storge on it which
means I can’t save any of my footage I have captured on it. Another issue I could have with the SD card is if I am given the wrong one and it doesn’t fit into
my camera slot, which also mean I can’t save or transfer any footage onto it.
Solution- To solve this before I take the camera out to film I need to check the storage on the SD card and if there isn’t enough left on it then I will have to
delete some of the footage so there is enough free space, I could also ask for a spare SD card as well just in case. If I do get given the wrong card then
before I take my equipment out of college I will have to check that everything is right with it including the SD card fitting inside my camera, if it doesn’t then
I will have to tell my tutor and they will give me another one.
Battery for camera
Problem- The battery I have for my camera could run out during filming which means I won’t be able to use the camera to film anything. The battery I am
given could also not work even when it’s charged which means I won’t be able to power my camera with anything.
Solution- To solve this I need to make sure before I go out to film that the battery I am using for the camera is fully charged so it doesn’t run out in the
middle of filming. I could also ask for a spare battery in case the first one does run out quickly, which will also help if the battery I am given doesn’t work
then I have a spare one. If the battery I am given doesn’t work I need to check before I leave with the equipment that it does so then if it doesn’t I can ask
for a new one that does work.
Lockdown solution
If lockdown happens during production then I won’t be able to film my trailer with a normal camera as I won’t be allowed in college to pick it
up. As a back up, I have planned to use my phone which is a Samsung galaxy s20, I used this when I filmed my last FMP because it was during
lockdown and the quality of the footage came out well. I did have some problem with it however, last time I used it for my FMP when I was
holding my phone it wasn’t very steady so on some of the footage was a bit shaky. This time I have had a plan to use a phone tripod which I can
get on amazon, this will hold my phone steady while filming so the footage doesn’t come out shaky. Also the camera on my phone gives me a
range of option on how to film for example, I can use the pro camera lens which makes the footage better quality, it gives me a night video
option so when it’s dark I can still film with good lighting, I can also use slow motion and super slow motion which I think would be interesting
to experiment with and see if I could use that in my trailer and I can also a live focus effect so the camera just focuses on one subject I choose in
the frame and blurs the rest out, similar to when you use a camera and adjust the focus on it. Using my phone camera in case lockdown does
happen I think is the best option to film on as it gives me a range of different effects I can use while filming and because I have used it before
for my Y1 FMP I now know what to do and what not to do while filming with it.
EQUIPMENT PROBLEMS
Tripod
Problems- A potential problem I could have with the tripod is if it breaks during production I wont have anything hold my camera on when I film to keep the
footage steady. Another issue I could have with the tripod is if when I am filing one of the legs is unbalanced on the surface causing my footage to be filmed on a
slant which would make my scene look weird and distracting to watch.
Solution- To solve this problem when filming I need to make sure the tripod doesn’t break so if I am not using it I will fold it up and put it away where someone
can’t trip over it. If I get the tripod and it’s already broken for example I can’t release the stands for it or one of the legs is slanted then before I take the tripod out
of college I need to check that it stands up right and nothing is broken so if it doesn’t I can tell my teacher and get a new one. When I set the tripod up when I
begin to film I need to make sure it’s on a flat surface so none of my footage is filmed on a slant or anything as well.
Audio recorder
Problems- A problem I could have with the audio recorder is when I am recording separate audio for my trailer, the recorder might be broken and unable to
capture my voice. The place where I am recording also might pick up a lot of unwanted noise and echo as well which could disrupt my voice recording. I also need
a SD card for the recorder as well to transfer my recordings onto my memory stick and if it’s the wrong card I won’t be able to transfer any of my recordings to my
memory stick.
Solutions- To make sure none of these problems occur, before I take the audio recorder out of college I need to check it first to make sure it can record my voice
and isn’t broken. If it is then I can tell my tutor and I can book out another one. When I do record my audio and it’s in a place where I get unwanted noise then for
my experiments I need to test the audio and find a place where I can capture it and avoid unwanted noise so then when it comes to production I know where to
record. With the SD card transfer for my audio I need to check that the card will fit into my computer so I can transfer it across if it doesn’t then I need to get
another card for it, I also need to make sure that the audio does transfer onto the card as well s before I take it from college I can do some experiments to see if
everything transfers okay.
Boom Microphone
Problems- A potential problem I could have with the Boom microphone is if when I am filming the microphone is unable to pick up any audio then the audience
wont be able to hear what the character is saying. Another problem I could face with the microphone is I need someone to hold the boom microphone and record
what they are hearing by listening to it with earphones on, if I don’t have enough people in my crew then I won’t have anyone to hold the microphone and record
the audio.
Solutions- To solve these issues I need to test out the boom mic before I use it to make sure it does pick up the audio, if it doesn’t then I will have to book a new
one out. If I don’t have enough people to film my trailer and someone can’t hold the boom mic then I will have to get a boom microphone that attaches itself to
the camera, the only problem with that is if I am doing a wide shot then it will be too far away from my characters voices so it won’t be able to pick anything up. To
solve this problem I will have to record the audio separately and try and dub it into the trailer when I edit it together.
Lockdown Solution
If lockdown happens during production then I will have to compromise with a lot of the equipment I won’t be able to use. Instead of
using a tripod I plan to buy a phone tripod which allows me to place my phone on a stand and movie it like you would a regular tripod.
Doing this will make my footage less shaky and it will be filmed steady as well. Most of what I plan to use to film my trailer if lockdown
does happen is my phone, I can record audio on it but I will have to record the audio separate because my phone won’t be able to pick
up the voices of my characters that well while I’m filming so I will have to do that all separately and edit it into my trailer. I think the
biggest issue I will have producing this in lockdown is trying to pick up the audio because if I am dubbing it into my trailer it might not
match the pace of which the character is speaking and it might look off, so I plan to only do voice overs in my trailer that doesn’t show
the character speaking just so I don’t have to worry about matching the audio with the lips on time. My trailer dialogue will be
narratively based and mainly the killer speaking and the killer won’t be fully shown in my trailer to build up mystery which is better for
my voice recording as I can just place it over the footage, because I plan for my main character to be listening to the killers voice
through a voice recorder and that will continue to play throughout different scenes in my trailer.
P R O P S A N D C O S T U M E S
( C O S T S )
Props
Problems- A potential problem I could have with the props is when I order them they might take too long to
arrive so they might come after I start production which means I won’t have any props to use. Another
Problem I could have is when the props arrive they might not be what was advertised when I bought them or
they could be a completely different product that just won’t fit the scene I am trying to create. One of the
biggest problems with the props is the cost of them, I am going to have to set myself a budget in order to
keep the price down and I will have to look at the cheapest option for the props so I don’t spend over my
given budget for the trailer.
Solution- To solve these problems, to make sure all my props arrive on time I will have to order them a few
weeks in advance. Most of the props I plan to buy will be off amazon and I have a prime membership which
means next day delivery, however this doesn’t apply to all the products so ordering them a few weeks before
production will guarantee they arrive in time, especially if I check the delivery dates. To make sure the props I
have ordered are what is advertised I need to check customer reviews for the product, if the reviews are bad
saying not what is shown then I will find a similar product with good reviews that guarantees that the product
advertised is what you get. To solve the cost of the props, I will set a budget for myself around £25-£30 I pan
to go back to my research and research all the props I plan to buy and write down the links and costs of them
all and see how much they will come to altogether. Doing this will help me make sure that I don’t go over my
budget and it gives me a realistic expectation of how much everything is.
Costume
Problems- There is a few issues I could have with the costumes, the main issue I am worried about is if the
costumes doesn’t fit the actors. If it’s too small for them then it will be uncomfortable for the actors to wear as
well as watching them wearing it in the trailer, the same goes for if it’s too big. Another problem I could have
with the costumes is the pricing of them, the costumes I need will be more expensive than the props and I
might go over the budget.
Solutions- To solve these issues, I need to ask my actors what size clothing they are so I don’t order any
clothes that are too small or big for them, and if they are then it won’t be completely noticeable because it’s
as close as there clothes size it will get and will still be wearable. With the costs before I buy any costumes I
will need to check if I own any clothes that will fit the part, I will also ask my crew as well so I’m not spending
money on something we already have. If an item of clothing is too expensive then I will need to look at a
alternative, cheaper option that looks similar to the original clothing but is affordable so I don’t go over
budget.
Lockdown effect
I don’t think lockdown would have a big effect on the props and costumes than it would have on getting the
equipment and camera because I’m not getting these props from college I’m ordering them myself. I do think
a slight effect it could have is maybe delaying how long it takes for props to arrive so I might need to consider
ordering them earlier than originally planned because our country will be in lockdown if I am ordering a prop
or costumes from a different country it might be hard for them to get it ot the UK. So once I have my list of
props I will need to order I will have to buy them as soon as possible in case there is any delays and so it all
arrives before I start my production.
S O F T W A R E P R O B L E M S
Premiere pro
Problems- I have had a few problems with premiere pro in the past, the main issue I have had with it is in the middle of editing clips together the
screen would go blank and sometimes crashed, every time it did this I would have to restart my computer because the software crashes everything
that is on my computer. Some other issues I have had with it is sometimes when I render a sequence the clips somehow all merge together which I
don’t want because on different clips I want to apply different effects onto it so I have to either break the clips up again or delete them which causes
me to apply all my editing I had done on them all over again.
Solutions- To solve these problems, I have faced these issues before and if my premiere crashes there isn’t much I can do about it except to restart
the computer I just to have to keep saving my work every time I add something new onto it so if the crash does occur, after I have restarted my
computer all my work on premiere will still be saved. With the rendering of the clips and them being combined together, I think after I have finished
editing all my scenes together and made sure I am happy with the result I should only render it after I have finished all my editing so if this does occur
then I don’t need to add anything to it or break it up to do that because it will already be finished.
Photoshop
Problems- Similar to premiere pro I have had quite a few issued with photoshop, the main one being the software crashing exactly like premiere did, I
have found that after a few hours on photoshop the software crashes which then makes me have to restart the computer. Another issue I have had
with photoshop is when I am trying to crop out something in the image it sometimes doesn’t crop out the object I have highlighted and instead crops
out most of the photo, I can just undo it but this can be extremely frustrating especially when it does it quite a few times in a row.
Solution- To solve these issues just like I plan to do with premiere, if photoshop crashes then I will need to regularly save my work before I restart the
computer so I don’t lose anything I have done. Another solution that might help is when I am using photoshop only have that software open and
close any apps because I think having lots of apps open while using photoshop is causing the software to crash because my computer can’t run
everything. When I am trying to crop a certain object in the image out instead of using the tool that keeps deleting the object I don’t highlight, I could
use another cropping tool as it has a few tools available that does the same job, if I try a new one it might be better and I won’t have to keep undoing
the image.
Adobe audition
Problems- I have only used Audition once for my podcast project I didn’t have many issues with it except from sometimes when I adjusted the pitch
on some of my audio it wouldn’t let me adjust it back to it’s original sound which was frustrating because I then had to delete the audio and import it
again, this only happened on some of my audio not all it. I haven’t experienced it crashing or anything because I haven’t used this software as much
as I have with Premiere and Photoshop but I imagine it might crash a bit due to the amount of power it takes the computer to run the software.
Solutions- To solve these problems if I can’t re adjust the audio back to it’s original sound then it might be a good idea to import two of the same
audio so if I adjust one and I can’t adjust it back then I have the spare one to use instead of having to import it again. If Audition does crash then I can
do the same as I plan to do with photoshop and premiere if I have the same problem which is to regularly save my work so if it does crash I still have
everything saved on it.
Lockdown solutions
At the start of my FMP I created a vlog on all the different websites I could potentially use if lockdown happened. In that Vlog I found
different apps and websites that are similar to photoshop, premiere and audition. The one I found most similar was a website call ed
photopea which was a free knockoff of photoshop, the website didn’t have all the features photoshop has but it had the basics that could
create a good poster as I have experimented with it. Another solution I could so is download photoshop, premiere and audition onto my
computer and when it comes to the time where I need to edit I can sign up for the 7 day free trail because I can’t afford to pay for it. This will
give me 7 days to complete my trailer and poster uses these software, if I run out of time and I still need to edit or add stuff to my project
then I can use the other websites have found that are free, so I can make sure I do all the main things I need to do to my project on the main
software in my 7 day free trial and add anything extra to it on the other websites I have chosen. Doing this should help me create my
product to a good standard if lockdown does happen and it makes me more prepared for it as well.
F I L M I N G O U T S I D E
Pedestrians
Problems- A potential issue I could come across while filming outside is the pedestrians getting in the way of filming. Because most of my trailer will
be filmed in a public park I expect there to be quite a few pedestrians about. One problem I could face with this is the majority of people who go to
the park are kids and they like to play football and ball games, the problem with this is if a kid is playing with a ball while I’m filming they could hit
my equipment with it or one of my crew, which could damage my equipment and injure my crew members. Another issue I could face with
pedestrians is the amount of noise they will make while I am filming, especially when the park is full of kids they can quite loud which could interrupt
me capturing the audio for my scene.
Solution- To solve these issues with the pedestrians, I plan to film my scenes at night and when it’s night there’s less people and kids around so
they won’t get in the way of my filming, If there is kids around playing football at that time of night and they are quite close to where I plan to film
then I will have to ask them to keep the ball and everything away from where I am filming, I know on one side of the park they play football so I plan
to use the other side so they shouldn’t come near any of the equipment or anything.
Weather conditions
Problems- A potential problem I could have while filming outside is if it rains and I have all my equipment set up such as the camera and boom
microphone then the rain could damage the equipment. It could also make the area I am filming in hazardous to my crew as the ground could be
slippy and it could cause my crew to slip and hurt themselves. Another issue I could face with the weather is if it’s too hot or cold and my crew aren’t
wearing appropriate clothing to suit the weather conditions then that could make them uncomfortable and could potential disrupt production as
they will find it hard to focus on anything but the weather.
Solutions- To solve these issues, I will have to look at the weather forecast in advance to production. That way I will know if it is going to rain or
how cold or hot it will be. If it does decide to rain on the day I plan to do my production then I will have to reschedule it because the rain could not
only damage equipment but it will also ruin the shot of my scene as well so I will have to reschedule. If the weather is hot when I look at the forecast
then I will tell my crew in advance what type of clothing they should wear and the same goes for if the weather is cold, that way my crew is prepared
for the weather conditions and it won’t make them uncomfortable or disrupt production.
Lighting
Problems- A potential issue I could have while filming outside is a problem with the lighting. If I rely on street lights as my only source of lighting
because I’m filming in the dark then that could be an issue if the lights are too dim or they don’t work. When I film the lighting will be bad if I just
have street lights because it will be too dark to see anything in the scene that I shoot.
Solutions- To solve this issue instead of relying on street lights as my only source of lighting I will have to bring my own lights that I could buy or I
could film my scene at a time where it’s not completely dark but it’s not daylight either because then it sets the scene with greyish lighting and the
street lights will also be on to add to it which will work better just before it turns to night.
Lockdown solution
If lockdown happens then it will effect me filming outside because I won’t be allowed to have as many people as I would of originally
wanted in my crew to help me film. I lockdown does happen then I can only meet with one other person outside my family bubble and this
will make it harder to film outside with less crew but if this happens then I plan to ask my family members that I live with to help me film as
well. The only good side to lockdown and filming outside is there will be less people at the area I plan to film because they have to stay
inside, which means I will have less distractions and obstacles while filming. I think with lockdown the only aspect of filming outside it
effects is the amount of people I will have in my crew filming and the amount of pedestrians about, the most difficult part of this is having
enough people to help me film outside but I think asking people inside my family bubble will help a lot to making sure I have enough
CAST AND CREW
Absence
Problem- A potential problem I could have on the day of filming is if one of my cast or crew members rings in sick on the day of filming or
they don’t turn up at all. This could have a massive effect on my production because if I am relying on them to either help me with filming such
as holding the boom mic or setting up props and them being in the actual trailer and they don’t come this could delay my production and I
would have to set it back.
Solution- To solve this problem I am only going to cast people I can rely on and who live close enough to me and the location I plan to film in.
If they ring in sick, before production I will tell them they can’t ring in sick on the day and they have to at least give me a couple days notice
instead of telling me on the day. If they do ring in sick on the day then I will need to have a backup person ready to help out such as one of my
family members that way I am not stalling my production and I will be sticking to my time schedule.
Roles
Problem- A potential problem I could have when I assign roles to my crew is they might not be comfortable doing the role I have assigned
them and want to switch but everyone else is happy with their role. Or I could assign my crew members a role they might not know what to do
such as holding the boom mic they might not know how to do that which could effect my production as I need the audio recorded properly
and if I give that role to someone who doesn’t know how to do it the audio could be messed up.
Solution- To solve this problem I will only assign roles to my crew that they are comfortable with doing. Whoever is on the boom mic I will
teach them how to use it before production starts and give the practice with it so they will be able to record the audio properly. This way
everyone will be happy with their roles and we won’t have many problems on set.
Cast & Crew dynamic
Problem- A potential problem I could have on set is if some of my cast and crew members don’t get along which could start arguments and
delay production. This could also come off on screen as well with the cast because they’re not professional actors and you might see the
tension on set in my trailer. Another problem I could have is if my cast and crew don’t take this production seriously and just mess about which
could delay filming and be very difficult to work with.
Solution- To solve this issue I plan to only cast people in my production who I know get along well with each other and don’t argue, I won’t be
casting anyone who doesn’t know anyone in my production so it’s not going to be awkward either because we are all friends. Before I cast
them I will remind them that this is a serious production and they need to take it seriously with no messing around while we are filming, after
we film is fine because I do what them to enjoy it but I also want my production to be done properly.
Lockdown Solution
If lockdown happens during production, I won’t be able to have the original amount of people I need to help me film my trailer. If this happens I plan to
get some of my family to help me film because I will be allowed to go out with people that are in my bubble. I can also meet up with one other person so
I will message one the people I need to act in my trailer to come that way I have at least one of my actors. When we’re filming I will also ask everyone
who isn’t acting to where masks so no one is spreading anything and to keep 2 metres apart from each other. I plan to play the 2 main characters in my
trailer so the antagonist and the protagonist I plan to play the antagonist because they will not be fully shown in my trailer it will just be implied that they
are there and they will be talking but the voice will be disguised. I will be playing the protagonist as well because I know I will show up for production so
I’m not fully relying on anyone to play the main character who is essential to my trailer, While I will be acting I will get one of my family members to film
but I will tell them what angles I need them to film at as well as how to hold the camera, unless I have to use a phone in lockdown they will know how to
use it. Doing this I will have less people on set and I will be sticking to the lockdown rules, when I am filming in my house I will only need two people for
that, one for filming and then myself who will be acting in it and the person filming will be a family member who lives in my house. Because in lockdown

PROBLEM SOLVING
SUMMARY
Was it useful?
I feel like this problem solving was very useful to me, it has helped me come up with various contingency plans in case a
potential issue occurs during production and it has helped me prepare in case there is another lockdown. Looking at both
theoretical issues and practical and technical problems has give me a more in depth and vast understanding of all the
potential issues that could occur during filming. Learning this has made me more prepared for production and the difficulties
I may face with it, I now feel confident I can overcome these issues if they were to occur.
What I have learnt from it
Coming up with potential problems I could face during production has helped me learn to cover every possible issue I could
have so I can come up with solutions if they were to every happen. I have found looking at different editing software's to be
particularly helpful as if I am ever in lockdown during production then I have a list of different websites and apps I can use to
put together my trailer and poster. This has helped me come up with different strategies in lockdown, such as filming with my
phone, looking at getting my family to help me make my product as I can’t meet with anyone else and just seeing the overall
effect lockdown could have on my production and coming up with solutions to overcome this, I have found has made me
much better prepared and confident that I can still produce a good standard product.
How I feel
After doing this problem solving and looking at various issues I could come across and solutions to these issues, I feel pretty
confident and well prepared now ready for production knowing I can overcome these problems now that I have had a more
in depth look at everything. After thoroughly going through everything and planning my experiments I think I will be well
prepared for any struggles I will face during production and I am ready to overcome them.

How will this help my project?
One of the experiments I plan to do is an audio experiment, in my trailer I
plan to have the antagonists voice to narrate throughout it and I want to
make it deep and unrecognizable but also compelling and chilling to the
audience. I have found this video that will help me experiment with this, the
tutorial is about how to make a Jigsaw voice which is something similar to
how I want my voice to sound. To edit the audio the man uses this software
called Audacity, which is free to use and something I have available on my
laptop so I don’t need any college software to be able to make this audio and
if lockdown happens during production and if the app works I can use this for
when I make my actual trailer.

How will this help my project?
One effect I planned to experiment with which, if successful, would be a good
effect to put in my trailer is a stop motion scene. I planned to do a stop motion
with one of my puzzle boxes to make it look like it’s opening on it’s own and this
will be something I will experiment with. The video will help me as it shows
different techniques I can use to get a smooth stop motion video and some tips
on how to make it work. I have tried stop motion before in my first year FMP but
it didn’t go well because I was doing it with a puppet I found hard to stand up
but this time I’m doing it with a small box so hopefully it will be easier to do. If it
doesn’t go well then I won’t try and do it in my trailer because it’s not something
that is essential to be in it but if it does go well I think it will be a cool effect to
have in it.

How will this help my project?
Because I currently don’t have access to photoshop due to lockdown, I wanted to do
an experiment poster using a different software so if lockdown does extend into my
production I have back up software I can use for editing. In this tutorial video they
use an app called Picsart which you can get on your phone, I watched the tutorial to
see if the poster they make comes out in good quality because sometimes on phone
apps they don’t but with this one I have found it’s quite similar to photoshop in
quality. I have also found I can get the app on my laptop as well which will work
better, another thing that helps me with the tutorial video is design techniques I can
use for my own poster such as the background they use as well as how they cropped
the image. If this app doesn’t work well in my experiment then I will get the 7 day free
trial of photoshop when it comes to production and we’re still in lockdown, but if it
does work well then I can stick to using that app.

How will this help my project?
Camera angles will play a huge part in my trailer, I need to use the right camera
angles to convey the emotions and atmosphere that is happening in my trailer to
the audience. The video I have linked shows the main different camera angles used
in films and what they show as well as tips on how to use them. For my experiment
I plan to take pictures of different camera angles of one object and I will take
these on my phone to see how they come out and how they look, this will help me
when it comes to filming my trailer as I will of practiced different angles and found
which ones to use that will suit my scene better in my trailer, also using my phone
gives me better practice of handling it if I don’t use an actual camera in
production.

Equipment
To record my audio I will be using my phone, I don’t have an audio recorder so
experimenting with capturing audio on my phone will be good practice for when it comes
to production and if we are still in lockdown. I will also be using my laptop to adjust the
audio and deepen the pitch so if the software I am using runs well on my laptop this will be
another benefit I will have when producing my trailer if lockdown happens. All the
equipment I am using in this experiment I will be able to use in my production in case
lockdown occurs.
Where will I be recording audio?
I will be recording my audio in my living room, I will be doing it in there because it’s a quite
area and I won’t be getting any unwanted noise. However if the audio doesn’t come out
very well then I will go into a different, smaller room to record because it could be that my
living room is too big and my voice echo’s so a smaller room might be better if I do have
that problem. Recording audio in different spaces will help me when it comes to production
as I will then know the best place to record my audio with, without interruptions.
Software I will be using
The software I will be using to edit my audio is an app called Audiotonic. In my audio
research the guy does use a different software called Audacity however when I tried to
download it, it wouldn’t let me. This new app is very similar to audacity in style and effects
you can use so hopefully it will do the same things in this app that the guy does on his one.
If it doesn’t then I was going to experiment with it myself, changing the pitch of the voice
and seeing what effects I could do to it. This will help me when it comes to production
because if this app works well I can use this instead of audition, if it doesn’t then I can find
a new one or do a free trial on Adobe Audition.
Overall plan
The overall plan is, I will record my voice saying a quote from the film Taken and I will then
put it into Audiotonic and adjust the pitch of the voice and add some effects to make it
sound sinister and threatening which is how I want the villains voice to sound in my project.
If this experiment goes well then I can use this app to do all my audio in and use the same
technique to make the antagonists voice in my trailer sound like what it hopefully will in my
experiment. Also finding different area where I can record my audio will help as well, if I find
a good place that captured my voice clearly then I know where I can record my audio when
AUDIO EXPERIMENT PROCESS
For my audio recording, I first thought I had to record audio on my phone and transfer it onto the software but it let me
record my voice on Audiotonic which I thought would be easier to do than transporting my voice from my phone to my
computer. I have found that the audio came out quite clear from my laptop which was good as I didn’t need to adjust
much with the volume or tidy anything up. When I was speaking I tried to make voice quite low pitch and my tone
neutral for the experiment to work. Doing this made my voice less recognisable when I changed the pitch of it.
The next thing I did with my audio was I added noise reduction to my audio so any background noise or
unwanted noise I have it cancels out. After that I trimmed my audio down, deleting any empty spaces at
the end and the beginning of my audio so I wasn’t waiting ages for it to start or end, After I did that I
selected my audio and clicked the normalise effect, this increases the volume of my audio so it comes out
louder and clearer. I then duplicated the track so I have two of the same, this will let me change the pitch
on each track so they can be different from each other but they will also overlap which will make a cool
effect on my voice.
After I had duplicated the track I the changed the pitch on my first track. Because my voice is quite high pitched I changed the
pitch to -25%, the man in the tutorial video changed his to -20% because he had a much deeper voice than me so I decreased
the percentage to make my voice a little deeper than his. After I changed the pitch on the first track I played it through and all
together I had the audio mixed with my normal voice and a deep voice. To change this I changed the pitch on the second track
and when I did this I had to add 6% onto what the pitch was on my first track so I changed it to -31%. When I played it through
again the audio was really deep and my voice was unrecognizable but clear to understand what I was saying which is what I
wanted to achieve.
To finish off my audio, on my second track I reversed the speed of it, I then added a phaser and reversed
the speed back. Then on my top track I also added a phaser, what this does is it alternates the sound
between the left and right channel and when I reversed the second track I did so instead of the audio
being backwards the phaser is. This just gives the audio a better effect and makes it sound better. After I
did this I played it through again and my voice was completely unrecognisable which in the end I wanted
to achieve, you also cant tell if I’m a girl which is also good because in my actual project the when I add
this effect to some audio the antagonist is suppose to be a man but because I have limited crew I will be
the one speaking. So now I know this can change how my voice sounds and you can’t tell it’s me I can use
this effect in my own production.
AUDIO EXPERIMENT RESULT
Did it work?
This experiment was successful, originally I was following a tutorial to make my voice sound like Jigsaws. However,
because I couldn’t get my own when I was recording my audio to sound like his for example I couldn’t get my voice that
deep or say it in the same accent my final audio didn’t come out exactly sounding like him. I was actually glad of this
because when I use this in my trailer I don’t want people thinking it’s like a Saw film if I copied his exact voice so I was
glad it came out as it’s own thing. The goal of this experiment was to make my voice sound unrecognisable and sinister,
I’m not sure if it sounds sinister enough but that could be because of the way I said the quote it wasn’t in a very
threatening way which I can fix when it comes to doing it in my trailer. My voice did sound unrecognisable though, and
you couldn’t tell my gender either which is good because I want my antagonist to be a man but because I will be doing
the voice I wasn’t sure I would have been able to achieve this but in the end it seemed to work. Overall I think this
experiment went really well, my voice was clear to understand and deep the whole effect I did it on it was relatively easy
to do as well so I didn’t spend too much time on it which I could benefit from when it comes to production. I have also
found the space where I recorded the audio worked quite well as well so I will be using the same space in production.
How will this effect my project?
This could have a big effect on my project as I have now found a software that I can easily record and
edit audio on and it’s free and available on my laptop. Knowing this now, if lockdown happens I can
use this software instead of adobe audition as it does what I need it to do and the audio that is
produced on it comes out clear for the audience to listen to. The whole point of this experiment was
to try and find an app that would allow me to adjust the audio of my voice to deepen the pitch of it, I
planned this because in my trailer this voice will narrate through most of it but it will look like it’s
coming through a tape recorder that my main character has found. Doing this effect in my
experiment I now know that it works and is more than doable to achieve, Another reason I did this
experiment was to try and find a place where I could record my audio without any interruptions or
unwanted noise. When I recorded my audio I did it in my living room, and I recorded it from my
laptop so now I know I can record from both my phone and laptop to capture audio and it should
come out clear. I think even if we don’t go into lockdown during production I will still use this app to
create my antagonists voice because from his experiment I know it works and I know how to edit it to
make it sound like it does. Overall, I have benefited greatly from conducting this experiment because
I now have free audio software to use and I know how to use it.
POSTER EXPERIMENT PLANNING
Software I will be using
The app I will be using to make my poster experiment is called PicsArt, I watched a tutorial
video that is in my experiment research on how to use it and the result they got from it
did look quite professional. The app might not be as good as Photoshop, not giving me
the same amount of options editing wise to use and not being as good a quality but if it
works in a similar way and produces a good quality poster then this will be something I
can use in production if photoshop isn’t available. However, if this doesn’t go well then if
we are still in lockdown during production I will sign up for the 7 day free trial on
photoshop, this should give me enough time to make more than one poster. However, at
the moment for my experiment I will stick with PicsArt to see what quality poster I can
produce with it.
Style of poster
The style of poster I want to make in my experiment is a mystery thriller poster, similar
to how I want to make it in actual production. However, in this poster I will be using
stock images just as an experiment because this is more to test out the app I have and
what effects it can do to an image, instead of me taking an actual photo and using it
this will just be quicker for me to do so I can move on to my other experiments but also
I can get use to using PicsArt and experiment with different style images, testing the
layouts and colour schemes I can use and see what works better so I can then apply it to
my poster I make for my final project.
Overall plan
My overall plan for my experiment is to try and successfully make a good standard thriller
poster, experimenting with different effects and images to achieve this. If this experiment
goes well then I will be able to use this software in my production if lockdown happens
and if it doesn’t go as planned or the app that I am using isn’t very good then I can
experiment with other apps that will hopefully be better or when it comes to production I
can use the free trial on photoshop because I have used that software multiple times
throughout my course and I know to make posters and edits on it at a good quality, so
that will be my backup plan if this experiment doesn’t go well.
POSTER EXPERIMENT PROCESS
Originally I was going to use the PicsArt app to make my poster. However, when I went on it, it wouldn’t let
me make my own poster and add my own images. It would only let me use their own stock images and
backgrounds and the effects available were very limited unless I wanted to pay for the actual app. Instead I
looked at the vlog I made of the websites that could help me in production and I decided to experiment with
Canvas. I found this much better than the PicsArt app as it would let me add my own images and it gave me
a range of effects I could do with it. The websites was still quite limited in what I could do compared to
photoshop but I found it was the best option to experiment with. The design I wanted to make my poster
was a mystery thriller, so something similar to what I want my final poster to look like however this
experiment was just to get use to the app and explore different effects it offered me.
For my poster I started to experiment with different images and effects to see what would give me the best
result. To start I chose this silhouette image because I thought it looked quite mysterious. I then went onto
effects and chose the glitch effect, this gave me a range of different styles I could apply to my image, my
favourite was the radiate effect. This made the outline of the person sort of glow and it used different
coloured lines such as red, green and blue and it made it look like neon lights. I thought this effect stood out
a lot and made the poster quite effective to look at. However, I did think the image I chose was too plain to
use as it’s mostly just a black background with lights outlining the face so instead I decided to choose another
image that was a bit more detailed.
My next image I experimented with was a full face image but shrouded in darkness, so much more detailed
than the silhouette image. I did another glitch effect on it, I found the radiate effect didn’t work very well
with this image so instead I chose a different one called opal. This effect glitches out the face so the eyes
have glitched out and it uses neon lights to highlight different aspects of the face which I think made a cool
effect. I was still trying to make a mystery thriller poster and I think this image conveyed the thriller part
and I do think the woman looks mysterious especially with the glitch effect as well.
After I had finished editing the image, I then decided to add the title and some credits. For the title I uses
this neon light effect so the outline is glowing red and the inside is black. I then added a plain font to add
the casts names on but I kept the colour red still. I used the colour red for the title because that is usually
the colour that conveys thriller as it has connotations of blood and death. This shows the audience what
type of film they would be seeing by the colour scheme I have uses in this experiment as well as the image
and effects used it shows it’s more of a grown up film, not meant for kids and it looks quite dark and
ominous as well.
P O S T E R E X P E R I M E N T R E S U L T
Did it work?
I think this poster experiment did work, the main point of this experiment was to find an app that would allow
me to make a good quality poster and offers me a range of different effects. I did struggle at first with the
PicsArt app as I was very limited to what I could do with it as it wouldn’t let me add my own images or any
effects to it so if I did my experiment in that app it would of failed. After I went through the different
software’s I used at the beginning of my FMP I decided to try out Canva and I found this to be much better to
work with than PicsArt. The only problem is I still felt restricted to what I could do with it, unlike photoshop
when I want to crop my image it wouldn’t let me fully crop it so there was still background left, so the
background I originally wanted to use in this poster I had to cover up and just use the background that came
with the image. I feel like this could be a big problem when I make my project as I need to be able to crop my
photos properly and use the background I want, I also feel like the poster I have made is quite plain, when I
make my actual poster I’m not going to go over the top with it and have so much going on you don’t know
where to look but I would like add a bit more to it than I have with this poster. I do think my experiment
poster conveys the thriller genre to my audience, from my research I did looking at movie posters I have
found that the colour schemes used and the fonts play a major part into conveying the genre as well as the
plot. Overall, I would say this experiment worked but only as a last resort because I need to be able to edit
images and play around with effects more that I can in Canva, so for my project I plan to use photoshop and
the free trail and if I run out of time with the trial I can take what I have produced on photoshop onto Canva
and finish off the editing. So I would of done the more complicated parts in photoshop and I would clean it
up in Canva.
How will this effect my project?
Now that I have experimented with different editing apps I now know which ones to use and will give me the
best result for when I make my project. My plan for when I make my FMP and if I have to make it in
lockdown, I plan to use the 7 day free trial I get with Photoshop so I can make my poster properly and have
full access to all the editing tools I need to make my poster, this way I know what I am doing with photoshop
because I have used the software many times in my previous projects and I can do a lot more with it such as
colour schemes, effects and cropping to make my poster at the best standard it can be. As a backup plan, if
my free trial runs out before I finish my poster I can continue it on Canva but I would of got the main things
done with my poster on photoshop before I brought it over to Canva so I can use the Canva website to finish
off or clean up anything in my poster. Doing this I think will give me the best result for my poster, because I
want to make sure it’s done properly and professionally and I believe Photoshop is the best way to guarantee
this.
S T O P M O T I O N E X P E R I M E N T P L A N N I N G
Software I will be using
The software I will be using to put my stop motion together is called Inshot. This app is on my
phone and I have used it before, I have found it is a good editing app to put pictures and videos
together, allowing you to change the speed of the video, add effects to it, music and different
transitions. The app is also free to use and you don’t need to pay anything extra unlike the issue I
had in my Poster experiment where most of the apps I used you had to buy the extra features and I
was very limited to what I could do. In this app I won’t have that problem as it gives me a range of
different features to use and I don’t feel limited to what I can do. I also plan to edit my stop motion
together on my phone because I will be taking pictures of it on my phone and there will be a lot of
images, I think it would be better and easier to edit them together on my phone rather than
transferring all the images onto my computer which could take a while to transfer and I can’t get
the Inshot app on my laptop either.
Prop
The prop I will be using for my stop motion is a Japanese puzzle box. This is the same prop I plan
to use in my trailer, however, I have a few different puzzle boxes in the same style only some are
different and harder to open. I have chosen this specific box to use because I only need to open
it from one side, whereas my others I need to solve two sides in order to open it. I thought if I’m
doing a stop motion it would be easier to just film one side of it opening instead of switching
camera angles to do both sides of a box because I didn’t think that would look right in a stop
motion if I kept moving the box and switching different sides so I thought it would work better to
just focus on opening one side of the puzzle.
Overall plan
My overall plan for this experiment is to set up a place where I can film my stop motion as well as
being able to set up my phone where it is level with the box and so it stays in the same place. When I
do the stop motion I plan to take about 4 or 5 photos every time I move I box. This will gradually
build up so I will keep moving it a bit then take the photos of it and I will keep doing that until I have
opened the box so when I put all those pictures together it will hopefully look like the box is opening
by itself. One of the problems I might have with this is when I move the box I need to make sure I put
it back in the same place because if I move out of place then it might look off and not very smooth
when I put all the pictures together, so I need to be aware of that.
S T O P M O T I O N E X P E R I M E N T P R O C E S S
Before I started my stop motion I used Sellotape around my box to mark where it was, this way after I move it I can
put it back in the same spot it was before. I did this because if I take the pictures of the box in one spot and then
when I move it and it’s not in the same position it could look really off when I put the stop motion together. I also
chose to use Sellotape to mark where the box should be placed because when I make the stop motion the tape is
transparent and not easy to see so when I place my box down It’s not very noticeable. I find that this could also be
a good idea when I’m setting up my set for my trailer when I’m placing props down I could use Sellotape to mark
where it should go, that way if we finish a scene but the prop has moved I can put it back in position to where it
originally was.
After I set up the markings for my box, I placed the box inside where the Sellotape was and I then I set up my phone
camera. I did struggle with this at first because I have a stand at the back of my phone and I tried to position it so
my phone was just level with the box but also so it could just see the top of it. When I trued to set this up my camera
kept facing downward because of my stand and I tried to adjust it but I couldn’t get it in the right position. I then
had use a lid off one of my boxes to give the camera more height to film from and so it was just level with the box
and could see it. After I set that up I started taking pictures of the box, I started by taking 5 pictures of the box in the
same position and I planned to keep doing the same amount all the way through.
To open up the puzzle box I had to slide the wooden strips into place, when I did this I gradually moved each slide a bit
and then took around 5 or 6 pictures of it every time I slightly moved the slides. One I got to a certain point with the
puzzle I had to push the face of it down so the box moved up slightly which would of changed the position it was
originally in. Despite me marking the area the box should be placed in I did struggle to place the box exactly in the same
position, I did keep the angle the camera was the same because I didn’t need to move it but when I placed the box down
I don’t think it was in the exact same position it was in last. I did try and change the angle of the camera when I was
sliding the top of the box off to see what was inside, but I found that switching the view of it really didn’t work out very
well so I deleted those pictures and just kept it in the same position.
When it came to putting the pictures together to create the stop motion, I used the Inshot app. When I put all my
pictures in the timeline I played it through and it was really slow so I had to increase the speed so each image lasts
only 0.1 seconds because when it was at the original speed it took ages for the picture to change onto the next
one so speeding it up made it smoother and better to watch. All together I took around 103 pictures when I sped
this up to 0.1 second I got a 10 second clip. I think this would be a good effect to use in my trailer because the
duration doesn’t take up a lot of my trailer time and if I added some filters and some music in the background as
well as doing it in a different lighting I think it would create a good suspense scene but I think it depends on how
the final experiment comes out and if it’s worth doing when I could spend time on doing something maybe more
better and important in my trailer.
S T O P M O T I O N E X P E R I M E N T R E S U L T
Did it work?
The experiment did work, however I think it could be much better. I tried to place the box in the
same position every time I picked it up and moved the wooden slides, but when I put it together
the box kept moving out of position every time I moved something in the box. When I placed it on
the Sellotape I couldn’t tell it was out of place, because it looked like I positioned it inside the tape
so if I do decided to do this in my trailer I need to come up with a better idea than marking the
position the puzzle box will be in with tape. I also think I could of sped the video up more because I
think it’s a bit long as well, I did change the speed to 0.1 seconds per image so I think it would have
been better if I took less pictures of the box in the same position to speed it up a bit. As a solution
to placing a marker down to position my box I could cut out a piece of paper the same size as the
box and tape the paper down on the floor so when I pick the box up to position the slides the
paper will stay in the same position and I can place the box on top of it so it the box will also be in
the same place. This is something I can consider if I decide to do this in my trailer, from the way it
turned out in my experiment I am re considering adding a stop motion effect in my trailer, because
I have most of my scenes planned out in order and I haven’t added the stop motion scene yet and I
don’t think it will fit in. However, I could try it out again in my production and solve the problems I
have had with it to see if it works but I will only do that if I have time left filming and I need some
more things added to it, otherwise for now I don’t think I will include it in my trailer.
How will this effect my project?
I have decided that I won’t add this stop motion effect in my trailer unless I have spare time in
production to try the effect out again. However, I don’t think this experiment was a failure because
this has still helped with my project as I have experimented with my phone and the camera quality
of it, as well as experimenting with how I could position my phone as I have learnt the stand on the
back of my phone case isn’t enough to stand my phone up to get it level so now I know that I
definitely need to get the phone tripod as part of my equipment for production in case we are in
lockdown. Overall, this experiment has helped me a lot when it comes to the production of my
trailer as it has allowed me to experiment with the equipment I will be using if lockdown is set to
happen during production and it has helped me realise that maybe doing a stop motion isn’t the
best idea to do in a thriller trailer but this has improved my skills with using my phone camera as
well as trying out a different editing software as well.
CAMERA ANGLE EXPERIMENTS
Eye Level close up
The eye level camera angle fills the screen with
parts of the subjects face. When using this angle
in a film or trailer it helps captures the characters
emotions, giving more feeling to the scene and it
gives the audience a better feel as to what the
character is feeling in that moment. I plan to use
this angle quite a lot in my trailer especially
during a suspense scene so I can capture the
characters fear and how tense they are which will
allow the audience to feel the same emotions as
the character which will contribute to making the
scene suspenseful for my audience.
Low Angle
The purpose of the Low angle shot is to show
that the character has dominance and power in
the scene. This is another angle I will be using in
my trailer to show which character is in control
of the scene most likely the antagonist at the
beginning as my protagonist will be quite lost
and not in control but near the end of my trailer
I will use this shot on my antagonist to show the
audience that in the film they will slowly have
control in the situation, showing that my
protagonist will eventually have the upper hand
and win against the antagonist.
Dutch Tilt
The Dutch tilt is used by tilting the camera to one
side so the frame isn’t level and this angle is used
for dramatic effect and it helps portray unease,
disorientation, frantic or desperate action,
intoxication and even madness. I find this angle to
be quite effective and it’s definitely one that I will
be using in my trailer, maybe perhaps when my
protagonist is trying to solve the puzzle box they
can come of as desperate and frantic trying to
solve it and this camera angle is a great way to
convey those feelings to the audience and show
that the puzzles are slowly driving my protagonist
mad.
CAMERA ANGLE EXPERIMENT
Overhead shot
The purpose of the Overhead shot, or the Birdseye view shot, is
used to create an overall establishing shot of the scene, or to
emphasise the smallness or insignificance of a subject. These
shots are normally used for battle scenes or establishing where
the character is. I think this would be a good shot to use in my
trailer, a possible scene I could use this shot in is where I’m
filming a scene with the victims body and I could be talking
about the killer, when I’m filming the dead body I could use the
overhead shot to show form the killers perspective how
insignificant that person was this would show the audience how
psychotic the antagonist is because it shows how minor he
thinks of the people he has killed.
Shoulder level close up
The shoulder level shot is pretty similar to the eye level shot
as the purpose of it is to show the characters emotions. This
shot is used quite commonly, and it is going to be a common
angle I will be using in my trailer. I will also be using a over
the should shot but because I didn’t have an actual person to
take these camera angles with so I couldn’t do the over the
shoulder shot. I will use the over the shoulder shot in my
trailer to show the perspective of the antagonist stalking the
protagonist to show they are always being watched. I think
this would be a good angle to include to show that and to
show that wherever my protagonist goes they’re never safe or
alone.
S E T D E S I G N
Office set
When I’m filming in my house I plan to film in two locations which is this
office room and my living room. I plan to use this office room because my
main character is a detective and they need files and equipment to show
that they are a detective and are trying to solve a murder. The only problem
with this space is, it’s quite small and tight so I might have difficulty trying
to film in it but I plan to use this space for one scene and I will do a shot list
so the camera angles are doable in the space that I have. Also to create mis
en scene I will make this office space messier and have images and clues
about the mystery killer to show the audience that the detective has been
focused on tis case for a long time and maybe to show an obsession they
have with solving it. This will give the audience a better understanding of
the character and their personality, especially if the space is messy and
disorganised which shows that the character isn’t flawless.
Investigation set
My investigation set I plan to film in my living room. I have a lot of wall
space near my fireplace which I think would be a good place to set up
an investigation wall with pictures of the murders, clues to why the killer
is murdering these people and ideas to solving the puzzle box. I think
this will be my main set design when I film I plan for the detective to sit
in that chair and try and solve the puzzle, I will also have different shots
of the board to show the audience the different murders the killer has
committed and how severe the case is. There is also a lot of room to
film in my living room but I have to make sure when I do film I don’t get
the fireplace in or Tortoise tank. I think when I film this it will be mainly
close up shots one of the investigation board and the detective trying to
solve the puzzle this way I won’t get any unwanted furniture in my shot
or anything.
EXPERIMENT SUMMARY
Was it useful?
I found my experiments to be very useful, I think the most successful experiment I did was the audio experiment. I have had issues with sound
before in my previous projects such as my factual I found my audio to be a bit off, but now I have found a software I can use which is free that will
allow me to adjust and clean up any audio I capture. It was also very helpful because in my trailer I want my antagonist to disguise their voice like
Jigsaw does in the film saw, and I have found a way to do this and make it sound slightly creepy which will hopefully draw in the audience. Another
aspect of my audio experiment that helped me was trying to find a suitable place that I can record my audio in without any interruptions or
background noise and I have found my living room to be the best place for this. My least successful experiment I did was probably the stop motion,
only because after I had finished it I didn’t think it would be necessary for it to be in my trailer. Before I did this experiment I had an idea in my head
of how I wanted it to look and I found in my experiment it didn’t really work so I have decided when it comes to production if I have extra time left
after I have filmed everything I might try the stop motion again to see if I can fit it in but that is only if I have time left. I did benefit from this
experiment however, as it helped me experiment with my phone camera and the quality of the pictures it took. I experimented with my phone
camera again when I did camera angles which I also found to be very useful as it gave me an idea of the different shots I could include in my trailer
and the meanings behind the angles. The poster experiment I did I also found to be useful as well because I got to experiment with different editing
software’s and it has helped me come up with a plan I can do when it comes to production and if we’re in lockdown. Overall, I would say all the
experiments I did were very useful because it has helped me plan out what I can do when it comes to production as well as experimenting with
different software's and equipment that I will need to use when filming. Despite some parts of the experiments being unsuccessful I would say I
have still benefited from it as I now know what to do and what not to do in my production.
How will it effect my project?
I think all my experiments as whole will have a positive effect on my project. I have learnt how to use new software which I will definitely benefit
from in production and I have learn new skills that will help me in filming as well as helping me during lockdown. After I have conducted these
experiments I feel a lot more confident about production, now knowing what could go wrong and how I will be able to fix it I also feel much more
prepared especially if lockdown happens I have plenty of back up plans that can get me through it and produce my project to a good, high
standard. The knowledge I have gathered from these experiments I think will have an important impact, because I have not only learnt things that
will help me in filming but I have also learnt things that will help me when I make my posters and everything as well so overall I would say my
experiments have been successful and will have a very positive impact towards my project.

Problem solving

  • 2. M I N D M A P P R A C T I C A L A N D T E C H N I C A L P R O B L E M S Practical & Technical problems Equipment There is a range of equipment I will be using to film and produce my trailer, all of which could cause me multiple issues. The equipment I plan to use in my project are: - 700D Canon Camera - Tripod - Audio recorder - Battery for camera - SD card for camera - Boom microphone This is the equipment I will be using if lockdown doesn’t happen if it does instead I will mainly be using my phone to capture footage and audio as I will not have access to the equipment above. If lockdown does not occur the issues I will have with the equipment are problems such as, The camera could run out of battery during filming, the tripod could break and I wont be able to stand my camera on anything, the audio camera could run out of battery or it won’t pick up the audio well, there might not be any storage on the SD card and the boom microphone might break and it won’t pick up ant audio. I will have to find different solutions to overcome these problems in order for production to work out well. Research There is a lot of problems that could happen in my research for my project for example, the links I have included in my research that I will later come back to further in my project to help me might not work, to solve this I will have to create a bibliography so I know where the link came from and what it was in case I forget. There might also be some research I missed that could help me a lot when it comes to production, so when I go back to my research I will add more things that will help me when it comes to the actual production of my project so looking at filming and editing techniques etc… Props Most the props I will be using I will be ordering online, mainly from amazon. The problems I could have for this are the props that do come might be not what I ordered or what was advertised on the website which could create problems in my production not having the right props. I might also order the props too late so they don’t arrive in time for filming. To solve this when I order the props I need to look at the reviews to make sure it is the right product I am ordering, and once I have the list of props I need for my trailer I need to order them as soon as I can so they arrive in time for filming. Money might also be an issue, also if I’m never going to use these props again I’m going to have to look at cheaper products so I’m not spending all my money on props. Storage Storage could be a problem during production, if I am filming on location and need to take all my props, equipment and other essentials with me then I will need a lot of storage. If I can’t fit everything in storage then it will be a problem as I might forget something during the day of filming, so I need to make sure I have enough storage to take everything with me as well as carrying it there. Power If I’m filming in the dark on location and relying on street lights for the main source of lighting in my film, the power might go out in that street and I won’t be able to film anything because it’s too dark. To solve I will need to bring some backup lighting or if I’m trying to film in the dark then I can do it at a time of day where it’s not too dark but it’s not too light either so it will give it a grim setting. I also might have problems with the power when I’m editing my footage together or making my poster because my computer could shut down and I won’t be able to do anything to fix this, I will need to save my work regularly when editing so I don’t lose any of it in case there is a power outage. Ability When it comes to ability such as the actors performances and filming there might be some problems. I know the actors I have chosen to star in my trailer took drama class but they have never acted in front of a camera and their ability to act might be effected because of the camera, to solve this I need to make sure my actors are comfortable and are able to act. Someone could show up on the day ill as well which can also effect their performances I am also getting someone else to help me film so if they are ill that could effect their ability on that as well. Also I will be showing the person helping me film how to use the camera as well so hopefully if they do what I say they will be able to film the scene to a good standard. Software The software I plan to use to make my project are premiere, photoshop and adobe audition. I have had problems with these before on other projects such as when I’m in the middle of editing the software all of a sudden crashes and I need to restart the computer, I always save my work after I add something to it on adobe so if it does shut down my work will be saved. Also in case lockdown happens I have found websites similar to adobe that will allow me to edit and make my project. Backing up When doing my work for my FMP if I don’t save it then I could lose all my work, so whenever I do anything towards my project I need to keep saving it regularly so I don’t lose it. I could also lose my memory stich which has all my work on so I need to remember to keep backing my work up on both my memory stick and computer so if I lose one my work will still be saved on another. I also need to keep adding it to my website or slide share so I have all my work on there as well.
  • 3. M I N D M A P T H E O R E T I C AL P R O B L E M S Theoretical Problems Filming outside There is a lot of potential issues that could occur while filming outside such as: - People getting in the way of filming, if I’m filming in a public location then some people might walk in front of the camera or makes lots of noise when I’m filming. - Weather conditions, such as rain, sleet or extreme winds can effect filming and possibly damage equipment - Temperature, if it’s cold or really warm while filming the cast needs to be in costume and the costume might not fit the temperature conditions - Lighting, if I’m filming in the dark the lighting could be bad and the footage could be hard to see. To solve these problems I think it all depends on the time of day I film, if people are getting in the way of filming I need to look at going on location when it’s less busy so preferably around night, with the weather conditions before I plan a day to film I need to look at the weather forecast ahead of time, that way I can see if it will be cold or warm so I can tell my crew how to dress ready for the day and so the weather doesn’t effect filming. With the lighting I will ne filming in the dark sometimes so I will need to bring my own lights and not rely on streetlamps. Unwanted noise A problem I can face while filming and collecting audio is collecting unwanted noise as well. I think this will mostly effect my production when I film outside because when I record the audio I could pick up a lot of wind, cars or people noises that will effect my audio. This can also happen when I’m just recording the dialogue and not filming I need to find a place that captures the voices nice and clearly so it doesn’t echo or gets disrupted by anything. When I’m filming outside I plan to collect the audio after I am filming so it doesn’t get disrupted by anything and you can hear what the characters are saying more clearly. Actors and Crew On the day I plan to film an actor could be sick and unable to come, or lockdown would have been enforced meaning that I can’t meet up with my actors and crew to film accept from one other person outside my household. This is why I will be acting as the main character in my trailer in case this does occur and I have planned to have one of my family members film some of my scenes because I know I can rely on them and I am allowed to meet up with them. Originally I planned to have around 4 people in my trailer, if lockdown does happen hopefully I can get away with meeting 2 other people outside my household and stick to being 2 metres apart from each other. Otherwise I will need to reconsider how many people will feature in my trailer and if it’s still doable to make. If not I will keep the same Crew Dynamic A potential problem I could have is if my crew doesn’t get along with each other and which causes arguments while filming which delays my production. When I chose the people to help me produce my trailer I chose people that I knew would get a long with each other. If there is a problem on set with one of the crew members not getting along then I would ask them to leave and find someone else that can either play their character or help me film, luckily I don’t think I will have that problem with the crew I have chosen because I know they get a long with each Location & transport The main location I plan to film my trailer is my house and the park near it, the potential issue I can have with this is when filming at the park there’s a lot of kids around so I will have to choose a time when there isn’t and because the park is mainly grass I will have to film on a dry day because when I set up the camera equipment it might get muddy if the grass is damp as well. A potential issue I have filming at my house is, if lockdown happens then I’m not allowed people from outside my household in my house so I will have to only use the character I am plying to do scenes in my house with and I might be able to have some people in my garden if lockdown happens to film so I can film out there as well. Transport might be a problem with a couple of my crew because they live further away but they have their own drivers license to get here, and because I am only filming near my house there wont be much transport needed to travel. Finance For my trailer I will need to buy props and costumes, a potential problem I can have with this is if the props I am looking at are too expensive and I go over the budget I will set myself. To solve this if the prop I have found is too expensive then I will need to look at cheaper options or go on different websites to see if I can get a cheaper deal. I will also have to set a realistic budget for myself so if the price all together goes over it I will have to rethink on buying certain props and if they’re needed. Production time A potential problem I could have with production is running over time and not getting everything filmed and put together by the deadline. To make sure this doesn’t happen, I have created a schedule to stick to during my production, so I have given myself a certain amount of days filming and a certain amount of time editing. If I need to go back and re shoot then I will have to do that in my own time if needed so I don’t take up any of my editing time and if I stick to that schedule I should get everything done in time to a good standard.
  • 4. M I N D M A P T H E O R E T I C AL P R O B L E M S P T 2 Theoretical problems (continued) Toilet facilities A potential issue I could have during production is if there isn’t any toilet facilities and one of my crew members might need the toilet. To solve this issue I have made sure the places I plan to film are in walking distance from my house, so if any of my crew does need the toilet then they can use the one at my house as it’s only a 2 minute walking distance. However if lockdown is in effect at that time and they are not allowed in my house, Hopefully filming will last just over an hour so if they need the toilet I will have to tell them to go before they come. Refreshments A problem I could have when filming is if any of my crew get dehydrated or hungry and they didn’t bring any drinks or snacks. To solve this I will remind them to bring water and snacks in case they do get hungry or dehydrated and if they forget they I will bring extra drinks just in case so this doesn’t disrupt filming and all my crew is comfortable. Job roles A problem I could have with job roles is if my crew forgot what role they are dedicated to, or they don’t feel comfortable in that role. If they forget what role they are chosen for I will have written down everyone’s role in my pre production and sent it out to all my crew so they don’t forget. If they don’t feel comfortable in the role I have dedicate them on the day then I will see if they could swap roles with another crew member or try and make their role more easier for them by helping them out in it. Health & safety A problem I can have with health and safety is one of my crew members could get hurt, this could be because of equipment laying around and them tripping over it, or the location I am filming at the weather could be bad and they could slip if it’s raining or because I am filming in a park some kids could be playing around with a ball that could hit one of my crew or the equipment. To avoid these problems, I will make sure any of the equipment set up isn’t a hazard to my crew so they don’t trip over it, If it rains and my crew could slip then I will tell them in advance to wear shoes with good grips on or I will re schedule my filming day to avoid the rain. If there is kids playing football, I have planned to film my trailer at night to avoid pedestrians but if there is kids playing around with a ball that could damage equipment and hurt the crew then I will have to tell them to keep the ball and everything away from where we are filming. Pedestrians A problem I could have during filming is if pedestrians get in the way, they could ruin the audio I will try and capture or they could get into the shot, To make sure this doesn’t happen I plan to film at a time when my location isn’t busy, which will be at night, The main location I will be filming at is my local park which I know is almost isolated at night so I won’t have any problems with pedestrians getting in the way of filming.
  • 5. CAMERA PROBLEMS Aperture problems Problem- When filming aperture is where the light filters through the camera, and it is very important to use when filming as it controls how much light enters my shot. If my aperture breaks while filming then that would be a huge problem as I wont be able to control the amount of light that gets through to my shot, and as I am making a thriller and to set that genre I need to control how dark and light my scene is. If it’s to bright I won’t be able to convey the right atmosphere to my audience, if it’s too dark my audience won’t be able to see what is going on. Solution- To solve this issue before I use the camera I will first check that everything works, including the aperture, shutter speed, and the camera lens. However, when filming something could happen to the aperture so as a back up I will try and book out a spare camera in case the aperture breaks, so I can continue filming on the other camera and just put the SD card into the backup one so if I have filmed any footage it will still save onto the card. Camera breaks Problem- If I’m in the middle of filming and the camera falls of the tripod it could break, which means I would have no camera to film and I would be fined. The camera could also be broken before I use it as well, so if I don’t check the camera before I film I won’t be able to film anything and I would also be fined as college might think I was the one who broke it. Solution- To solve this when I put the camera on the tripod I need to make sure it is one secure so it won’t fall off, this also applies to when I am holding the camera I need to make sure I have a firm grip on it so it doesn’t fall. Before I take the camera from college I need to check everything over first, so the camera lens, SD card slot, aperture and everything to make sure it works, if it doesn’t then I need to tell my tutor and get a new camera. SD card problems Problem- A potential problem I could have with the camera is if the SD card I have to save and transfer my footage doesn’t have enough storge on it which means I can’t save any of my footage I have captured on it. Another issue I could have with the SD card is if I am given the wrong one and it doesn’t fit into my camera slot, which also mean I can’t save or transfer any footage onto it. Solution- To solve this before I take the camera out to film I need to check the storage on the SD card and if there isn’t enough left on it then I will have to delete some of the footage so there is enough free space, I could also ask for a spare SD card as well just in case. If I do get given the wrong card then before I take my equipment out of college I will have to check that everything is right with it including the SD card fitting inside my camera, if it doesn’t then I will have to tell my tutor and they will give me another one. Battery for camera Problem- The battery I have for my camera could run out during filming which means I won’t be able to use the camera to film anything. The battery I am given could also not work even when it’s charged which means I won’t be able to power my camera with anything. Solution- To solve this I need to make sure before I go out to film that the battery I am using for the camera is fully charged so it doesn’t run out in the middle of filming. I could also ask for a spare battery in case the first one does run out quickly, which will also help if the battery I am given doesn’t work then I have a spare one. If the battery I am given doesn’t work I need to check before I leave with the equipment that it does so then if it doesn’t I can ask for a new one that does work. Lockdown solution If lockdown happens during production then I won’t be able to film my trailer with a normal camera as I won’t be allowed in college to pick it up. As a back up, I have planned to use my phone which is a Samsung galaxy s20, I used this when I filmed my last FMP because it was during lockdown and the quality of the footage came out well. I did have some problem with it however, last time I used it for my FMP when I was holding my phone it wasn’t very steady so on some of the footage was a bit shaky. This time I have had a plan to use a phone tripod which I can get on amazon, this will hold my phone steady while filming so the footage doesn’t come out shaky. Also the camera on my phone gives me a range of option on how to film for example, I can use the pro camera lens which makes the footage better quality, it gives me a night video option so when it’s dark I can still film with good lighting, I can also use slow motion and super slow motion which I think would be interesting to experiment with and see if I could use that in my trailer and I can also a live focus effect so the camera just focuses on one subject I choose in the frame and blurs the rest out, similar to when you use a camera and adjust the focus on it. Using my phone camera in case lockdown does happen I think is the best option to film on as it gives me a range of different effects I can use while filming and because I have used it before for my Y1 FMP I now know what to do and what not to do while filming with it.
  • 6. EQUIPMENT PROBLEMS Tripod Problems- A potential problem I could have with the tripod is if it breaks during production I wont have anything hold my camera on when I film to keep the footage steady. Another issue I could have with the tripod is if when I am filing one of the legs is unbalanced on the surface causing my footage to be filmed on a slant which would make my scene look weird and distracting to watch. Solution- To solve this problem when filming I need to make sure the tripod doesn’t break so if I am not using it I will fold it up and put it away where someone can’t trip over it. If I get the tripod and it’s already broken for example I can’t release the stands for it or one of the legs is slanted then before I take the tripod out of college I need to check that it stands up right and nothing is broken so if it doesn’t I can tell my teacher and get a new one. When I set the tripod up when I begin to film I need to make sure it’s on a flat surface so none of my footage is filmed on a slant or anything as well. Audio recorder Problems- A problem I could have with the audio recorder is when I am recording separate audio for my trailer, the recorder might be broken and unable to capture my voice. The place where I am recording also might pick up a lot of unwanted noise and echo as well which could disrupt my voice recording. I also need a SD card for the recorder as well to transfer my recordings onto my memory stick and if it’s the wrong card I won’t be able to transfer any of my recordings to my memory stick. Solutions- To make sure none of these problems occur, before I take the audio recorder out of college I need to check it first to make sure it can record my voice and isn’t broken. If it is then I can tell my tutor and I can book out another one. When I do record my audio and it’s in a place where I get unwanted noise then for my experiments I need to test the audio and find a place where I can capture it and avoid unwanted noise so then when it comes to production I know where to record. With the SD card transfer for my audio I need to check that the card will fit into my computer so I can transfer it across if it doesn’t then I need to get another card for it, I also need to make sure that the audio does transfer onto the card as well s before I take it from college I can do some experiments to see if everything transfers okay. Boom Microphone Problems- A potential problem I could have with the Boom microphone is if when I am filming the microphone is unable to pick up any audio then the audience wont be able to hear what the character is saying. Another problem I could face with the microphone is I need someone to hold the boom microphone and record what they are hearing by listening to it with earphones on, if I don’t have enough people in my crew then I won’t have anyone to hold the microphone and record the audio. Solutions- To solve these issues I need to test out the boom mic before I use it to make sure it does pick up the audio, if it doesn’t then I will have to book a new one out. If I don’t have enough people to film my trailer and someone can’t hold the boom mic then I will have to get a boom microphone that attaches itself to the camera, the only problem with that is if I am doing a wide shot then it will be too far away from my characters voices so it won’t be able to pick anything up. To solve this problem I will have to record the audio separately and try and dub it into the trailer when I edit it together. Lockdown Solution If lockdown happens during production then I will have to compromise with a lot of the equipment I won’t be able to use. Instead of using a tripod I plan to buy a phone tripod which allows me to place my phone on a stand and movie it like you would a regular tripod. Doing this will make my footage less shaky and it will be filmed steady as well. Most of what I plan to use to film my trailer if lockdown does happen is my phone, I can record audio on it but I will have to record the audio separate because my phone won’t be able to pick up the voices of my characters that well while I’m filming so I will have to do that all separately and edit it into my trailer. I think the biggest issue I will have producing this in lockdown is trying to pick up the audio because if I am dubbing it into my trailer it might not match the pace of which the character is speaking and it might look off, so I plan to only do voice overs in my trailer that doesn’t show the character speaking just so I don’t have to worry about matching the audio with the lips on time. My trailer dialogue will be narratively based and mainly the killer speaking and the killer won’t be fully shown in my trailer to build up mystery which is better for my voice recording as I can just place it over the footage, because I plan for my main character to be listening to the killers voice through a voice recorder and that will continue to play throughout different scenes in my trailer.
  • 7. P R O P S A N D C O S T U M E S ( C O S T S ) Props Problems- A potential problem I could have with the props is when I order them they might take too long to arrive so they might come after I start production which means I won’t have any props to use. Another Problem I could have is when the props arrive they might not be what was advertised when I bought them or they could be a completely different product that just won’t fit the scene I am trying to create. One of the biggest problems with the props is the cost of them, I am going to have to set myself a budget in order to keep the price down and I will have to look at the cheapest option for the props so I don’t spend over my given budget for the trailer. Solution- To solve these problems, to make sure all my props arrive on time I will have to order them a few weeks in advance. Most of the props I plan to buy will be off amazon and I have a prime membership which means next day delivery, however this doesn’t apply to all the products so ordering them a few weeks before production will guarantee they arrive in time, especially if I check the delivery dates. To make sure the props I have ordered are what is advertised I need to check customer reviews for the product, if the reviews are bad saying not what is shown then I will find a similar product with good reviews that guarantees that the product advertised is what you get. To solve the cost of the props, I will set a budget for myself around £25-£30 I pan to go back to my research and research all the props I plan to buy and write down the links and costs of them all and see how much they will come to altogether. Doing this will help me make sure that I don’t go over my budget and it gives me a realistic expectation of how much everything is. Costume Problems- There is a few issues I could have with the costumes, the main issue I am worried about is if the costumes doesn’t fit the actors. If it’s too small for them then it will be uncomfortable for the actors to wear as well as watching them wearing it in the trailer, the same goes for if it’s too big. Another problem I could have with the costumes is the pricing of them, the costumes I need will be more expensive than the props and I might go over the budget. Solutions- To solve these issues, I need to ask my actors what size clothing they are so I don’t order any clothes that are too small or big for them, and if they are then it won’t be completely noticeable because it’s as close as there clothes size it will get and will still be wearable. With the costs before I buy any costumes I will need to check if I own any clothes that will fit the part, I will also ask my crew as well so I’m not spending money on something we already have. If an item of clothing is too expensive then I will need to look at a alternative, cheaper option that looks similar to the original clothing but is affordable so I don’t go over budget. Lockdown effect I don’t think lockdown would have a big effect on the props and costumes than it would have on getting the equipment and camera because I’m not getting these props from college I’m ordering them myself. I do think a slight effect it could have is maybe delaying how long it takes for props to arrive so I might need to consider ordering them earlier than originally planned because our country will be in lockdown if I am ordering a prop or costumes from a different country it might be hard for them to get it ot the UK. So once I have my list of props I will need to order I will have to buy them as soon as possible in case there is any delays and so it all arrives before I start my production.
  • 8. S O F T W A R E P R O B L E M S Premiere pro Problems- I have had a few problems with premiere pro in the past, the main issue I have had with it is in the middle of editing clips together the screen would go blank and sometimes crashed, every time it did this I would have to restart my computer because the software crashes everything that is on my computer. Some other issues I have had with it is sometimes when I render a sequence the clips somehow all merge together which I don’t want because on different clips I want to apply different effects onto it so I have to either break the clips up again or delete them which causes me to apply all my editing I had done on them all over again. Solutions- To solve these problems, I have faced these issues before and if my premiere crashes there isn’t much I can do about it except to restart the computer I just to have to keep saving my work every time I add something new onto it so if the crash does occur, after I have restarted my computer all my work on premiere will still be saved. With the rendering of the clips and them being combined together, I think after I have finished editing all my scenes together and made sure I am happy with the result I should only render it after I have finished all my editing so if this does occur then I don’t need to add anything to it or break it up to do that because it will already be finished. Photoshop Problems- Similar to premiere pro I have had quite a few issued with photoshop, the main one being the software crashing exactly like premiere did, I have found that after a few hours on photoshop the software crashes which then makes me have to restart the computer. Another issue I have had with photoshop is when I am trying to crop out something in the image it sometimes doesn’t crop out the object I have highlighted and instead crops out most of the photo, I can just undo it but this can be extremely frustrating especially when it does it quite a few times in a row. Solution- To solve these issues just like I plan to do with premiere, if photoshop crashes then I will need to regularly save my work before I restart the computer so I don’t lose anything I have done. Another solution that might help is when I am using photoshop only have that software open and close any apps because I think having lots of apps open while using photoshop is causing the software to crash because my computer can’t run everything. When I am trying to crop a certain object in the image out instead of using the tool that keeps deleting the object I don’t highlight, I could use another cropping tool as it has a few tools available that does the same job, if I try a new one it might be better and I won’t have to keep undoing the image. Adobe audition Problems- I have only used Audition once for my podcast project I didn’t have many issues with it except from sometimes when I adjusted the pitch on some of my audio it wouldn’t let me adjust it back to it’s original sound which was frustrating because I then had to delete the audio and import it again, this only happened on some of my audio not all it. I haven’t experienced it crashing or anything because I haven’t used this software as much as I have with Premiere and Photoshop but I imagine it might crash a bit due to the amount of power it takes the computer to run the software. Solutions- To solve these problems if I can’t re adjust the audio back to it’s original sound then it might be a good idea to import two of the same audio so if I adjust one and I can’t adjust it back then I have the spare one to use instead of having to import it again. If Audition does crash then I can do the same as I plan to do with photoshop and premiere if I have the same problem which is to regularly save my work so if it does crash I still have everything saved on it. Lockdown solutions At the start of my FMP I created a vlog on all the different websites I could potentially use if lockdown happened. In that Vlog I found different apps and websites that are similar to photoshop, premiere and audition. The one I found most similar was a website call ed photopea which was a free knockoff of photoshop, the website didn’t have all the features photoshop has but it had the basics that could create a good poster as I have experimented with it. Another solution I could so is download photoshop, premiere and audition onto my computer and when it comes to the time where I need to edit I can sign up for the 7 day free trail because I can’t afford to pay for it. This will give me 7 days to complete my trailer and poster uses these software, if I run out of time and I still need to edit or add stuff to my project then I can use the other websites have found that are free, so I can make sure I do all the main things I need to do to my project on the main software in my 7 day free trial and add anything extra to it on the other websites I have chosen. Doing this should help me create my product to a good standard if lockdown does happen and it makes me more prepared for it as well.
  • 9. F I L M I N G O U T S I D E Pedestrians Problems- A potential issue I could come across while filming outside is the pedestrians getting in the way of filming. Because most of my trailer will be filmed in a public park I expect there to be quite a few pedestrians about. One problem I could face with this is the majority of people who go to the park are kids and they like to play football and ball games, the problem with this is if a kid is playing with a ball while I’m filming they could hit my equipment with it or one of my crew, which could damage my equipment and injure my crew members. Another issue I could face with pedestrians is the amount of noise they will make while I am filming, especially when the park is full of kids they can quite loud which could interrupt me capturing the audio for my scene. Solution- To solve these issues with the pedestrians, I plan to film my scenes at night and when it’s night there’s less people and kids around so they won’t get in the way of my filming, If there is kids around playing football at that time of night and they are quite close to where I plan to film then I will have to ask them to keep the ball and everything away from where I am filming, I know on one side of the park they play football so I plan to use the other side so they shouldn’t come near any of the equipment or anything. Weather conditions Problems- A potential problem I could have while filming outside is if it rains and I have all my equipment set up such as the camera and boom microphone then the rain could damage the equipment. It could also make the area I am filming in hazardous to my crew as the ground could be slippy and it could cause my crew to slip and hurt themselves. Another issue I could face with the weather is if it’s too hot or cold and my crew aren’t wearing appropriate clothing to suit the weather conditions then that could make them uncomfortable and could potential disrupt production as they will find it hard to focus on anything but the weather. Solutions- To solve these issues, I will have to look at the weather forecast in advance to production. That way I will know if it is going to rain or how cold or hot it will be. If it does decide to rain on the day I plan to do my production then I will have to reschedule it because the rain could not only damage equipment but it will also ruin the shot of my scene as well so I will have to reschedule. If the weather is hot when I look at the forecast then I will tell my crew in advance what type of clothing they should wear and the same goes for if the weather is cold, that way my crew is prepared for the weather conditions and it won’t make them uncomfortable or disrupt production. Lighting Problems- A potential issue I could have while filming outside is a problem with the lighting. If I rely on street lights as my only source of lighting because I’m filming in the dark then that could be an issue if the lights are too dim or they don’t work. When I film the lighting will be bad if I just have street lights because it will be too dark to see anything in the scene that I shoot. Solutions- To solve this issue instead of relying on street lights as my only source of lighting I will have to bring my own lights that I could buy or I could film my scene at a time where it’s not completely dark but it’s not daylight either because then it sets the scene with greyish lighting and the street lights will also be on to add to it which will work better just before it turns to night. Lockdown solution If lockdown happens then it will effect me filming outside because I won’t be allowed to have as many people as I would of originally wanted in my crew to help me film. I lockdown does happen then I can only meet with one other person outside my family bubble and this will make it harder to film outside with less crew but if this happens then I plan to ask my family members that I live with to help me film as well. The only good side to lockdown and filming outside is there will be less people at the area I plan to film because they have to stay inside, which means I will have less distractions and obstacles while filming. I think with lockdown the only aspect of filming outside it effects is the amount of people I will have in my crew filming and the amount of pedestrians about, the most difficult part of this is having enough people to help me film outside but I think asking people inside my family bubble will help a lot to making sure I have enough
  • 10. CAST AND CREW Absence Problem- A potential problem I could have on the day of filming is if one of my cast or crew members rings in sick on the day of filming or they don’t turn up at all. This could have a massive effect on my production because if I am relying on them to either help me with filming such as holding the boom mic or setting up props and them being in the actual trailer and they don’t come this could delay my production and I would have to set it back. Solution- To solve this problem I am only going to cast people I can rely on and who live close enough to me and the location I plan to film in. If they ring in sick, before production I will tell them they can’t ring in sick on the day and they have to at least give me a couple days notice instead of telling me on the day. If they do ring in sick on the day then I will need to have a backup person ready to help out such as one of my family members that way I am not stalling my production and I will be sticking to my time schedule. Roles Problem- A potential problem I could have when I assign roles to my crew is they might not be comfortable doing the role I have assigned them and want to switch but everyone else is happy with their role. Or I could assign my crew members a role they might not know what to do such as holding the boom mic they might not know how to do that which could effect my production as I need the audio recorded properly and if I give that role to someone who doesn’t know how to do it the audio could be messed up. Solution- To solve this problem I will only assign roles to my crew that they are comfortable with doing. Whoever is on the boom mic I will teach them how to use it before production starts and give the practice with it so they will be able to record the audio properly. This way everyone will be happy with their roles and we won’t have many problems on set. Cast & Crew dynamic Problem- A potential problem I could have on set is if some of my cast and crew members don’t get along which could start arguments and delay production. This could also come off on screen as well with the cast because they’re not professional actors and you might see the tension on set in my trailer. Another problem I could have is if my cast and crew don’t take this production seriously and just mess about which could delay filming and be very difficult to work with. Solution- To solve this issue I plan to only cast people in my production who I know get along well with each other and don’t argue, I won’t be casting anyone who doesn’t know anyone in my production so it’s not going to be awkward either because we are all friends. Before I cast them I will remind them that this is a serious production and they need to take it seriously with no messing around while we are filming, after we film is fine because I do what them to enjoy it but I also want my production to be done properly. Lockdown Solution If lockdown happens during production, I won’t be able to have the original amount of people I need to help me film my trailer. If this happens I plan to get some of my family to help me film because I will be allowed to go out with people that are in my bubble. I can also meet up with one other person so I will message one the people I need to act in my trailer to come that way I have at least one of my actors. When we’re filming I will also ask everyone who isn’t acting to where masks so no one is spreading anything and to keep 2 metres apart from each other. I plan to play the 2 main characters in my trailer so the antagonist and the protagonist I plan to play the antagonist because they will not be fully shown in my trailer it will just be implied that they are there and they will be talking but the voice will be disguised. I will be playing the protagonist as well because I know I will show up for production so I’m not fully relying on anyone to play the main character who is essential to my trailer, While I will be acting I will get one of my family members to film but I will tell them what angles I need them to film at as well as how to hold the camera, unless I have to use a phone in lockdown they will know how to use it. Doing this I will have less people on set and I will be sticking to the lockdown rules, when I am filming in my house I will only need two people for that, one for filming and then myself who will be acting in it and the person filming will be a family member who lives in my house. Because in lockdown

  • 14. PROBLEM SOLVING SUMMARY Was it useful? I feel like this problem solving was very useful to me, it has helped me come up with various contingency plans in case a potential issue occurs during production and it has helped me prepare in case there is another lockdown. Looking at both theoretical issues and practical and technical problems has give me a more in depth and vast understanding of all the potential issues that could occur during filming. Learning this has made me more prepared for production and the difficulties I may face with it, I now feel confident I can overcome these issues if they were to occur. What I have learnt from it Coming up with potential problems I could face during production has helped me learn to cover every possible issue I could have so I can come up with solutions if they were to every happen. I have found looking at different editing software's to be particularly helpful as if I am ever in lockdown during production then I have a list of different websites and apps I can use to put together my trailer and poster. This has helped me come up with different strategies in lockdown, such as filming with my phone, looking at getting my family to help me make my product as I can’t meet with anyone else and just seeing the overall effect lockdown could have on my production and coming up with solutions to overcome this, I have found has made me much better prepared and confident that I can still produce a good standard product. How I feel After doing this problem solving and looking at various issues I could come across and solutions to these issues, I feel pretty confident and well prepared now ready for production knowing I can overcome these problems now that I have had a more in depth look at everything. After thoroughly going through everything and planning my experiments I think I will be well prepared for any struggles I will face during production and I am ready to overcome them.
  • 16. RESEARCH FOR EXPERIMENTS Audio experiment video Chris Payne. (2015). Jigsaw Voice Tutorial in Audacity. [Online Video]. 7 December 2015. Available from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8S7CctWwd0. [Accessed: 1 February 2021]. How will this help my project? One of the experiments I plan to do is an audio experiment, in my trailer I plan to have the antagonists voice to narrate throughout it and I want to make it deep and unrecognizable but also compelling and chilling to the audience. I have found this video that will help me experiment with this, the tutorial is about how to make a Jigsaw voice which is something similar to how I want my voice to sound. To edit the audio the man uses this software called Audacity, which is free to use and something I have available on my laptop so I don’t need any college software to be able to make this audio and if lockdown happens during production and if the app works I can use this for when I make my actual trailer. Stop motion experiment video Edu Puertas. (2020). 6 Tips to get Smoother Stop Motion Animation. [Online Video]. 28 June 2020. Available from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ne5hdCRN9YM. [Accessed: 1 February 2021]. How will this help my project? One effect I planned to experiment with which, if successful, would be a good effect to put in my trailer is a stop motion scene. I planned to do a stop motion with one of my puzzle boxes to make it look like it’s opening on it’s own and this will be something I will experiment with. The video will help me as it shows different techniques I can use to get a smooth stop motion video and some tips on how to make it work. I have tried stop motion before in my first year FMP but it didn’t go well because I was doing it with a puppet I found hard to stand up but this time I’m doing it with a small box so hopefully it will be easier to do. If it doesn’t go well then I won’t try and do it in my trailer because it’s not something that is essential to be in it but if it does go well I think it will be a cool effect to have in it. Poster experiment video Design picsart l mostafa gnedy. (2018). Create a My Candy Horror Movie Poster Design in picsart. [Online Video]. 20 August 2018. Available from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bERw6Idt0B8. [Accessed: 1 February 2021]. How will this help my project? Because I currently don’t have access to photoshop due to lockdown, I wanted to do an experiment poster using a different software so if lockdown does extend into my production I have back up software I can use for editing. In this tutorial video they use an app called Picsart which you can get on your phone, I watched the tutorial to see if the poster they make comes out in good quality because sometimes on phone apps they don’t but with this one I have found it’s quite similar to photoshop in quality. I have also found I can get the app on my laptop as well which will work better, another thing that helps me with the tutorial video is design techniques I can use for my own poster such as the background they use as well as how they cropped the image. If this app doesn’t work well in my experiment then I will get the 7 day free trial of photoshop when it comes to production and we’re still in lockdown, but if it does work well then I can stick to using that app. Camera angles experiment Parker Wallbeck. (2019). 12 CAMERA ANGLES to Enhance Your Films. [Online Video]. 19 February 2020. Available from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlNviMsi0K0. [Accessed: 1 February 2021]. How will this help my project? Camera angles will play a huge part in my trailer, I need to use the right camera angles to convey the emotions and atmosphere that is happening in my trailer to the audience. The video I have linked shows the main different camera angles used in films and what they show as well as tips on how to use them. For my experiment I plan to take pictures of different camera angles of one object and I will take these on my phone to see how they come out and how they look, this will help me when it comes to filming my trailer as I will of practiced different angles and found which ones to use that will suit my scene better in my trailer, also using my phone gives me better practice of handling it if I don’t use an actual camera in production.
  • 17. A U D I O E X P E R I M E N T P L A N N I N G Equipment To record my audio I will be using my phone, I don’t have an audio recorder so experimenting with capturing audio on my phone will be good practice for when it comes to production and if we are still in lockdown. I will also be using my laptop to adjust the audio and deepen the pitch so if the software I am using runs well on my laptop this will be another benefit I will have when producing my trailer if lockdown happens. All the equipment I am using in this experiment I will be able to use in my production in case lockdown occurs. Where will I be recording audio? I will be recording my audio in my living room, I will be doing it in there because it’s a quite area and I won’t be getting any unwanted noise. However if the audio doesn’t come out very well then I will go into a different, smaller room to record because it could be that my living room is too big and my voice echo’s so a smaller room might be better if I do have that problem. Recording audio in different spaces will help me when it comes to production as I will then know the best place to record my audio with, without interruptions. Software I will be using The software I will be using to edit my audio is an app called Audiotonic. In my audio research the guy does use a different software called Audacity however when I tried to download it, it wouldn’t let me. This new app is very similar to audacity in style and effects you can use so hopefully it will do the same things in this app that the guy does on his one. If it doesn’t then I was going to experiment with it myself, changing the pitch of the voice and seeing what effects I could do to it. This will help me when it comes to production because if this app works well I can use this instead of audition, if it doesn’t then I can find a new one or do a free trial on Adobe Audition. Overall plan The overall plan is, I will record my voice saying a quote from the film Taken and I will then put it into Audiotonic and adjust the pitch of the voice and add some effects to make it sound sinister and threatening which is how I want the villains voice to sound in my project. If this experiment goes well then I can use this app to do all my audio in and use the same technique to make the antagonists voice in my trailer sound like what it hopefully will in my experiment. Also finding different area where I can record my audio will help as well, if I find a good place that captured my voice clearly then I know where I can record my audio when
  • 18. AUDIO EXPERIMENT PROCESS For my audio recording, I first thought I had to record audio on my phone and transfer it onto the software but it let me record my voice on Audiotonic which I thought would be easier to do than transporting my voice from my phone to my computer. I have found that the audio came out quite clear from my laptop which was good as I didn’t need to adjust much with the volume or tidy anything up. When I was speaking I tried to make voice quite low pitch and my tone neutral for the experiment to work. Doing this made my voice less recognisable when I changed the pitch of it. The next thing I did with my audio was I added noise reduction to my audio so any background noise or unwanted noise I have it cancels out. After that I trimmed my audio down, deleting any empty spaces at the end and the beginning of my audio so I wasn’t waiting ages for it to start or end, After I did that I selected my audio and clicked the normalise effect, this increases the volume of my audio so it comes out louder and clearer. I then duplicated the track so I have two of the same, this will let me change the pitch on each track so they can be different from each other but they will also overlap which will make a cool effect on my voice. After I had duplicated the track I the changed the pitch on my first track. Because my voice is quite high pitched I changed the pitch to -25%, the man in the tutorial video changed his to -20% because he had a much deeper voice than me so I decreased the percentage to make my voice a little deeper than his. After I changed the pitch on the first track I played it through and all together I had the audio mixed with my normal voice and a deep voice. To change this I changed the pitch on the second track and when I did this I had to add 6% onto what the pitch was on my first track so I changed it to -31%. When I played it through again the audio was really deep and my voice was unrecognizable but clear to understand what I was saying which is what I wanted to achieve. To finish off my audio, on my second track I reversed the speed of it, I then added a phaser and reversed the speed back. Then on my top track I also added a phaser, what this does is it alternates the sound between the left and right channel and when I reversed the second track I did so instead of the audio being backwards the phaser is. This just gives the audio a better effect and makes it sound better. After I did this I played it through again and my voice was completely unrecognisable which in the end I wanted to achieve, you also cant tell if I’m a girl which is also good because in my actual project the when I add this effect to some audio the antagonist is suppose to be a man but because I have limited crew I will be the one speaking. So now I know this can change how my voice sounds and you can’t tell it’s me I can use this effect in my own production.
  • 19. AUDIO EXPERIMENT RESULT Did it work? This experiment was successful, originally I was following a tutorial to make my voice sound like Jigsaws. However, because I couldn’t get my own when I was recording my audio to sound like his for example I couldn’t get my voice that deep or say it in the same accent my final audio didn’t come out exactly sounding like him. I was actually glad of this because when I use this in my trailer I don’t want people thinking it’s like a Saw film if I copied his exact voice so I was glad it came out as it’s own thing. The goal of this experiment was to make my voice sound unrecognisable and sinister, I’m not sure if it sounds sinister enough but that could be because of the way I said the quote it wasn’t in a very threatening way which I can fix when it comes to doing it in my trailer. My voice did sound unrecognisable though, and you couldn’t tell my gender either which is good because I want my antagonist to be a man but because I will be doing the voice I wasn’t sure I would have been able to achieve this but in the end it seemed to work. Overall I think this experiment went really well, my voice was clear to understand and deep the whole effect I did it on it was relatively easy to do as well so I didn’t spend too much time on it which I could benefit from when it comes to production. I have also found the space where I recorded the audio worked quite well as well so I will be using the same space in production. How will this effect my project? This could have a big effect on my project as I have now found a software that I can easily record and edit audio on and it’s free and available on my laptop. Knowing this now, if lockdown happens I can use this software instead of adobe audition as it does what I need it to do and the audio that is produced on it comes out clear for the audience to listen to. The whole point of this experiment was to try and find an app that would allow me to adjust the audio of my voice to deepen the pitch of it, I planned this because in my trailer this voice will narrate through most of it but it will look like it’s coming through a tape recorder that my main character has found. Doing this effect in my experiment I now know that it works and is more than doable to achieve, Another reason I did this experiment was to try and find a place where I could record my audio without any interruptions or unwanted noise. When I recorded my audio I did it in my living room, and I recorded it from my laptop so now I know I can record from both my phone and laptop to capture audio and it should come out clear. I think even if we don’t go into lockdown during production I will still use this app to create my antagonists voice because from his experiment I know it works and I know how to edit it to make it sound like it does. Overall, I have benefited greatly from conducting this experiment because I now have free audio software to use and I know how to use it.
  • 20. POSTER EXPERIMENT PLANNING Software I will be using The app I will be using to make my poster experiment is called PicsArt, I watched a tutorial video that is in my experiment research on how to use it and the result they got from it did look quite professional. The app might not be as good as Photoshop, not giving me the same amount of options editing wise to use and not being as good a quality but if it works in a similar way and produces a good quality poster then this will be something I can use in production if photoshop isn’t available. However, if this doesn’t go well then if we are still in lockdown during production I will sign up for the 7 day free trial on photoshop, this should give me enough time to make more than one poster. However, at the moment for my experiment I will stick with PicsArt to see what quality poster I can produce with it. Style of poster The style of poster I want to make in my experiment is a mystery thriller poster, similar to how I want to make it in actual production. However, in this poster I will be using stock images just as an experiment because this is more to test out the app I have and what effects it can do to an image, instead of me taking an actual photo and using it this will just be quicker for me to do so I can move on to my other experiments but also I can get use to using PicsArt and experiment with different style images, testing the layouts and colour schemes I can use and see what works better so I can then apply it to my poster I make for my final project. Overall plan My overall plan for my experiment is to try and successfully make a good standard thriller poster, experimenting with different effects and images to achieve this. If this experiment goes well then I will be able to use this software in my production if lockdown happens and if it doesn’t go as planned or the app that I am using isn’t very good then I can experiment with other apps that will hopefully be better or when it comes to production I can use the free trial on photoshop because I have used that software multiple times throughout my course and I know to make posters and edits on it at a good quality, so that will be my backup plan if this experiment doesn’t go well.
  • 21. POSTER EXPERIMENT PROCESS Originally I was going to use the PicsArt app to make my poster. However, when I went on it, it wouldn’t let me make my own poster and add my own images. It would only let me use their own stock images and backgrounds and the effects available were very limited unless I wanted to pay for the actual app. Instead I looked at the vlog I made of the websites that could help me in production and I decided to experiment with Canvas. I found this much better than the PicsArt app as it would let me add my own images and it gave me a range of effects I could do with it. The websites was still quite limited in what I could do compared to photoshop but I found it was the best option to experiment with. The design I wanted to make my poster was a mystery thriller, so something similar to what I want my final poster to look like however this experiment was just to get use to the app and explore different effects it offered me. For my poster I started to experiment with different images and effects to see what would give me the best result. To start I chose this silhouette image because I thought it looked quite mysterious. I then went onto effects and chose the glitch effect, this gave me a range of different styles I could apply to my image, my favourite was the radiate effect. This made the outline of the person sort of glow and it used different coloured lines such as red, green and blue and it made it look like neon lights. I thought this effect stood out a lot and made the poster quite effective to look at. However, I did think the image I chose was too plain to use as it’s mostly just a black background with lights outlining the face so instead I decided to choose another image that was a bit more detailed. My next image I experimented with was a full face image but shrouded in darkness, so much more detailed than the silhouette image. I did another glitch effect on it, I found the radiate effect didn’t work very well with this image so instead I chose a different one called opal. This effect glitches out the face so the eyes have glitched out and it uses neon lights to highlight different aspects of the face which I think made a cool effect. I was still trying to make a mystery thriller poster and I think this image conveyed the thriller part and I do think the woman looks mysterious especially with the glitch effect as well. After I had finished editing the image, I then decided to add the title and some credits. For the title I uses this neon light effect so the outline is glowing red and the inside is black. I then added a plain font to add the casts names on but I kept the colour red still. I used the colour red for the title because that is usually the colour that conveys thriller as it has connotations of blood and death. This shows the audience what type of film they would be seeing by the colour scheme I have uses in this experiment as well as the image and effects used it shows it’s more of a grown up film, not meant for kids and it looks quite dark and ominous as well.
  • 22. P O S T E R E X P E R I M E N T R E S U L T Did it work? I think this poster experiment did work, the main point of this experiment was to find an app that would allow me to make a good quality poster and offers me a range of different effects. I did struggle at first with the PicsArt app as I was very limited to what I could do with it as it wouldn’t let me add my own images or any effects to it so if I did my experiment in that app it would of failed. After I went through the different software’s I used at the beginning of my FMP I decided to try out Canva and I found this to be much better to work with than PicsArt. The only problem is I still felt restricted to what I could do with it, unlike photoshop when I want to crop my image it wouldn’t let me fully crop it so there was still background left, so the background I originally wanted to use in this poster I had to cover up and just use the background that came with the image. I feel like this could be a big problem when I make my project as I need to be able to crop my photos properly and use the background I want, I also feel like the poster I have made is quite plain, when I make my actual poster I’m not going to go over the top with it and have so much going on you don’t know where to look but I would like add a bit more to it than I have with this poster. I do think my experiment poster conveys the thriller genre to my audience, from my research I did looking at movie posters I have found that the colour schemes used and the fonts play a major part into conveying the genre as well as the plot. Overall, I would say this experiment worked but only as a last resort because I need to be able to edit images and play around with effects more that I can in Canva, so for my project I plan to use photoshop and the free trail and if I run out of time with the trial I can take what I have produced on photoshop onto Canva and finish off the editing. So I would of done the more complicated parts in photoshop and I would clean it up in Canva. How will this effect my project? Now that I have experimented with different editing apps I now know which ones to use and will give me the best result for when I make my project. My plan for when I make my FMP and if I have to make it in lockdown, I plan to use the 7 day free trial I get with Photoshop so I can make my poster properly and have full access to all the editing tools I need to make my poster, this way I know what I am doing with photoshop because I have used the software many times in my previous projects and I can do a lot more with it such as colour schemes, effects and cropping to make my poster at the best standard it can be. As a backup plan, if my free trial runs out before I finish my poster I can continue it on Canva but I would of got the main things done with my poster on photoshop before I brought it over to Canva so I can use the Canva website to finish off or clean up anything in my poster. Doing this I think will give me the best result for my poster, because I want to make sure it’s done properly and professionally and I believe Photoshop is the best way to guarantee this.
  • 23. S T O P M O T I O N E X P E R I M E N T P L A N N I N G Software I will be using The software I will be using to put my stop motion together is called Inshot. This app is on my phone and I have used it before, I have found it is a good editing app to put pictures and videos together, allowing you to change the speed of the video, add effects to it, music and different transitions. The app is also free to use and you don’t need to pay anything extra unlike the issue I had in my Poster experiment where most of the apps I used you had to buy the extra features and I was very limited to what I could do. In this app I won’t have that problem as it gives me a range of different features to use and I don’t feel limited to what I can do. I also plan to edit my stop motion together on my phone because I will be taking pictures of it on my phone and there will be a lot of images, I think it would be better and easier to edit them together on my phone rather than transferring all the images onto my computer which could take a while to transfer and I can’t get the Inshot app on my laptop either. Prop The prop I will be using for my stop motion is a Japanese puzzle box. This is the same prop I plan to use in my trailer, however, I have a few different puzzle boxes in the same style only some are different and harder to open. I have chosen this specific box to use because I only need to open it from one side, whereas my others I need to solve two sides in order to open it. I thought if I’m doing a stop motion it would be easier to just film one side of it opening instead of switching camera angles to do both sides of a box because I didn’t think that would look right in a stop motion if I kept moving the box and switching different sides so I thought it would work better to just focus on opening one side of the puzzle. Overall plan My overall plan for this experiment is to set up a place where I can film my stop motion as well as being able to set up my phone where it is level with the box and so it stays in the same place. When I do the stop motion I plan to take about 4 or 5 photos every time I move I box. This will gradually build up so I will keep moving it a bit then take the photos of it and I will keep doing that until I have opened the box so when I put all those pictures together it will hopefully look like the box is opening by itself. One of the problems I might have with this is when I move the box I need to make sure I put it back in the same place because if I move out of place then it might look off and not very smooth when I put all the pictures together, so I need to be aware of that.
  • 24. S T O P M O T I O N E X P E R I M E N T P R O C E S S Before I started my stop motion I used Sellotape around my box to mark where it was, this way after I move it I can put it back in the same spot it was before. I did this because if I take the pictures of the box in one spot and then when I move it and it’s not in the same position it could look really off when I put the stop motion together. I also chose to use Sellotape to mark where the box should be placed because when I make the stop motion the tape is transparent and not easy to see so when I place my box down It’s not very noticeable. I find that this could also be a good idea when I’m setting up my set for my trailer when I’m placing props down I could use Sellotape to mark where it should go, that way if we finish a scene but the prop has moved I can put it back in position to where it originally was. After I set up the markings for my box, I placed the box inside where the Sellotape was and I then I set up my phone camera. I did struggle with this at first because I have a stand at the back of my phone and I tried to position it so my phone was just level with the box but also so it could just see the top of it. When I trued to set this up my camera kept facing downward because of my stand and I tried to adjust it but I couldn’t get it in the right position. I then had use a lid off one of my boxes to give the camera more height to film from and so it was just level with the box and could see it. After I set that up I started taking pictures of the box, I started by taking 5 pictures of the box in the same position and I planned to keep doing the same amount all the way through. To open up the puzzle box I had to slide the wooden strips into place, when I did this I gradually moved each slide a bit and then took around 5 or 6 pictures of it every time I slightly moved the slides. One I got to a certain point with the puzzle I had to push the face of it down so the box moved up slightly which would of changed the position it was originally in. Despite me marking the area the box should be placed in I did struggle to place the box exactly in the same position, I did keep the angle the camera was the same because I didn’t need to move it but when I placed the box down I don’t think it was in the exact same position it was in last. I did try and change the angle of the camera when I was sliding the top of the box off to see what was inside, but I found that switching the view of it really didn’t work out very well so I deleted those pictures and just kept it in the same position. When it came to putting the pictures together to create the stop motion, I used the Inshot app. When I put all my pictures in the timeline I played it through and it was really slow so I had to increase the speed so each image lasts only 0.1 seconds because when it was at the original speed it took ages for the picture to change onto the next one so speeding it up made it smoother and better to watch. All together I took around 103 pictures when I sped this up to 0.1 second I got a 10 second clip. I think this would be a good effect to use in my trailer because the duration doesn’t take up a lot of my trailer time and if I added some filters and some music in the background as well as doing it in a different lighting I think it would create a good suspense scene but I think it depends on how the final experiment comes out and if it’s worth doing when I could spend time on doing something maybe more better and important in my trailer.
  • 25. S T O P M O T I O N E X P E R I M E N T R E S U L T Did it work? The experiment did work, however I think it could be much better. I tried to place the box in the same position every time I picked it up and moved the wooden slides, but when I put it together the box kept moving out of position every time I moved something in the box. When I placed it on the Sellotape I couldn’t tell it was out of place, because it looked like I positioned it inside the tape so if I do decided to do this in my trailer I need to come up with a better idea than marking the position the puzzle box will be in with tape. I also think I could of sped the video up more because I think it’s a bit long as well, I did change the speed to 0.1 seconds per image so I think it would have been better if I took less pictures of the box in the same position to speed it up a bit. As a solution to placing a marker down to position my box I could cut out a piece of paper the same size as the box and tape the paper down on the floor so when I pick the box up to position the slides the paper will stay in the same position and I can place the box on top of it so it the box will also be in the same place. This is something I can consider if I decide to do this in my trailer, from the way it turned out in my experiment I am re considering adding a stop motion effect in my trailer, because I have most of my scenes planned out in order and I haven’t added the stop motion scene yet and I don’t think it will fit in. However, I could try it out again in my production and solve the problems I have had with it to see if it works but I will only do that if I have time left filming and I need some more things added to it, otherwise for now I don’t think I will include it in my trailer. How will this effect my project? I have decided that I won’t add this stop motion effect in my trailer unless I have spare time in production to try the effect out again. However, I don’t think this experiment was a failure because this has still helped with my project as I have experimented with my phone and the camera quality of it, as well as experimenting with how I could position my phone as I have learnt the stand on the back of my phone case isn’t enough to stand my phone up to get it level so now I know that I definitely need to get the phone tripod as part of my equipment for production in case we are in lockdown. Overall, this experiment has helped me a lot when it comes to the production of my trailer as it has allowed me to experiment with the equipment I will be using if lockdown is set to happen during production and it has helped me realise that maybe doing a stop motion isn’t the best idea to do in a thriller trailer but this has improved my skills with using my phone camera as well as trying out a different editing software as well.
  • 26. CAMERA ANGLE EXPERIMENTS Eye Level close up The eye level camera angle fills the screen with parts of the subjects face. When using this angle in a film or trailer it helps captures the characters emotions, giving more feeling to the scene and it gives the audience a better feel as to what the character is feeling in that moment. I plan to use this angle quite a lot in my trailer especially during a suspense scene so I can capture the characters fear and how tense they are which will allow the audience to feel the same emotions as the character which will contribute to making the scene suspenseful for my audience. Low Angle The purpose of the Low angle shot is to show that the character has dominance and power in the scene. This is another angle I will be using in my trailer to show which character is in control of the scene most likely the antagonist at the beginning as my protagonist will be quite lost and not in control but near the end of my trailer I will use this shot on my antagonist to show the audience that in the film they will slowly have control in the situation, showing that my protagonist will eventually have the upper hand and win against the antagonist. Dutch Tilt The Dutch tilt is used by tilting the camera to one side so the frame isn’t level and this angle is used for dramatic effect and it helps portray unease, disorientation, frantic or desperate action, intoxication and even madness. I find this angle to be quite effective and it’s definitely one that I will be using in my trailer, maybe perhaps when my protagonist is trying to solve the puzzle box they can come of as desperate and frantic trying to solve it and this camera angle is a great way to convey those feelings to the audience and show that the puzzles are slowly driving my protagonist mad.
  • 27. CAMERA ANGLE EXPERIMENT Overhead shot The purpose of the Overhead shot, or the Birdseye view shot, is used to create an overall establishing shot of the scene, or to emphasise the smallness or insignificance of a subject. These shots are normally used for battle scenes or establishing where the character is. I think this would be a good shot to use in my trailer, a possible scene I could use this shot in is where I’m filming a scene with the victims body and I could be talking about the killer, when I’m filming the dead body I could use the overhead shot to show form the killers perspective how insignificant that person was this would show the audience how psychotic the antagonist is because it shows how minor he thinks of the people he has killed. Shoulder level close up The shoulder level shot is pretty similar to the eye level shot as the purpose of it is to show the characters emotions. This shot is used quite commonly, and it is going to be a common angle I will be using in my trailer. I will also be using a over the should shot but because I didn’t have an actual person to take these camera angles with so I couldn’t do the over the shoulder shot. I will use the over the shoulder shot in my trailer to show the perspective of the antagonist stalking the protagonist to show they are always being watched. I think this would be a good angle to include to show that and to show that wherever my protagonist goes they’re never safe or alone.
  • 28. S E T D E S I G N Office set When I’m filming in my house I plan to film in two locations which is this office room and my living room. I plan to use this office room because my main character is a detective and they need files and equipment to show that they are a detective and are trying to solve a murder. The only problem with this space is, it’s quite small and tight so I might have difficulty trying to film in it but I plan to use this space for one scene and I will do a shot list so the camera angles are doable in the space that I have. Also to create mis en scene I will make this office space messier and have images and clues about the mystery killer to show the audience that the detective has been focused on tis case for a long time and maybe to show an obsession they have with solving it. This will give the audience a better understanding of the character and their personality, especially if the space is messy and disorganised which shows that the character isn’t flawless. Investigation set My investigation set I plan to film in my living room. I have a lot of wall space near my fireplace which I think would be a good place to set up an investigation wall with pictures of the murders, clues to why the killer is murdering these people and ideas to solving the puzzle box. I think this will be my main set design when I film I plan for the detective to sit in that chair and try and solve the puzzle, I will also have different shots of the board to show the audience the different murders the killer has committed and how severe the case is. There is also a lot of room to film in my living room but I have to make sure when I do film I don’t get the fireplace in or Tortoise tank. I think when I film this it will be mainly close up shots one of the investigation board and the detective trying to solve the puzzle this way I won’t get any unwanted furniture in my shot or anything.
  • 29. EXPERIMENT SUMMARY Was it useful? I found my experiments to be very useful, I think the most successful experiment I did was the audio experiment. I have had issues with sound before in my previous projects such as my factual I found my audio to be a bit off, but now I have found a software I can use which is free that will allow me to adjust and clean up any audio I capture. It was also very helpful because in my trailer I want my antagonist to disguise their voice like Jigsaw does in the film saw, and I have found a way to do this and make it sound slightly creepy which will hopefully draw in the audience. Another aspect of my audio experiment that helped me was trying to find a suitable place that I can record my audio in without any interruptions or background noise and I have found my living room to be the best place for this. My least successful experiment I did was probably the stop motion, only because after I had finished it I didn’t think it would be necessary for it to be in my trailer. Before I did this experiment I had an idea in my head of how I wanted it to look and I found in my experiment it didn’t really work so I have decided when it comes to production if I have extra time left after I have filmed everything I might try the stop motion again to see if I can fit it in but that is only if I have time left. I did benefit from this experiment however, as it helped me experiment with my phone camera and the quality of the pictures it took. I experimented with my phone camera again when I did camera angles which I also found to be very useful as it gave me an idea of the different shots I could include in my trailer and the meanings behind the angles. The poster experiment I did I also found to be useful as well because I got to experiment with different editing software’s and it has helped me come up with a plan I can do when it comes to production and if we’re in lockdown. Overall, I would say all the experiments I did were very useful because it has helped me plan out what I can do when it comes to production as well as experimenting with different software's and equipment that I will need to use when filming. Despite some parts of the experiments being unsuccessful I would say I have still benefited from it as I now know what to do and what not to do in my production. How will it effect my project? I think all my experiments as whole will have a positive effect on my project. I have learnt how to use new software which I will definitely benefit from in production and I have learn new skills that will help me in filming as well as helping me during lockdown. After I have conducted these experiments I feel a lot more confident about production, now knowing what could go wrong and how I will be able to fix it I also feel much more prepared especially if lockdown happens I have plenty of back up plans that can get me through it and produce my project to a good, high standard. The knowledge I have gathered from these experiments I think will have an important impact, because I have not only learnt things that will help me in filming but I have also learnt things that will help me when I make my posters and everything as well so overall I would say my experiments have been successful and will have a very positive impact towards my project.
