Like everyone, I was really surprised by Facebook buying WhatsApp for such a high valuation. So I directly went on HeyCrowd to figure out if Whatsapp was really that popular. Like often, I found out that results depend a lot on the country. I love to see how different population use different products. To go further, I asked the same question about which is the best messaging app to all countries. It's particularly striking for whatsapp because the difference grew over such a short time. It's probably because of fierce competition that Whatsapp is not that dominant in the US nor in England. In France, messaging was included in most plans really early which made messaging app less appealing. But in Italy, Germany, Spain, and Brazil, Whatsapp has no serious competition with around 80% marketshare, meaning it's too late for Facebook to catch up. It is interesting that Whatsapp thrived in Europe, South America and emerging markets but not in the US. More than ever, a success in mobile means being global from the beginning.
