Site
Careful consideration of how our building interacts with the context of
the surrounding area has always been considered throughout the design
phase. Especially the interaction between how the building communi-
cates with the western approach into the campus has been taken. Land-
scaping has been effectively used to mould through the existing slope
to channel peoples view to the building as they walk up out through the
arch of the roundabout.
Existing footprint of babbage is finished with a natural cleft stone cladding from devon stone to tie in with other parts of the cam-
pus, a similar finish to elements of the roland levinsky building as a dark stone faced façade that is not imposing. Vertical timber
battens of 50mm x 25mm from any generic building supplier, used to conceal curtain walling being giving a clean elevation to
the east and west, fastened with a flexible point Nvelope NV6 system. Kingspan corten steel cladding sheets installed to northern
aspect as a striking new addition to make a statement. The cladding system has a rusted protective layer that weathers positive-
ly over time.
Design Philosophy
The arrangement of floors was dependent largely on being able to intro-
duce as much natural light as possible, being the reason for the large
double height space to south east of the forth and fifth floors, widely glazes
stairwell tower and double set of rooflights to atrium that cuts through the
centre of the new footprint.
The circulation spaces largely revolve around the atrium as the core of the
new building that all rooms feed off from. The atrium allows for the service
to each floor via strains a two passenger lifts, acting as this anchor allows
users to always know where there are inside the building.

Structure
We have designed the structure so that the old concrete
frame ties in with the existing concrete structure has been
challenging. The use of a Glulam frame system has provided
to be the most effective solution while being far more sustaina-
ble than a steel or concrete alternative.
Having carried out an analysis on the soil structure piles were
decided to be the most appropriate method for foundations.
The basement and implementation of two lecture theatres to
the ground floor have provided several problems. Several re-
taining wall has been placed around the base of the building
to increase the structural performance of the basement struc-
ture. Several significant steel elements have been added to
reinforce where waffle slabs have been removed.
Energy Modelling
Energy modelling of the new building was undertaken to see
the energy consumption of the building. This could then be
analysed to reduce the consumption in different aspects.
The original value was 817 kwh/ m2 / yr but though a number
of methods further discussed bellow this was brought down to
just 82.4 kwh/ m2 / yr which is only 20 points off the very hard
target of 66 for architecture 2030. This could have been po-
tentially achieved through further optimisation however the
budget limited the building here. To reduce the points the
biggest impact was reducing the U-value of the fabric this
borough the overall consumption down significantly once
each façade was done. They are the first four drips seen on
the graph. The last graph shows several further measure that
brough the number down even lower.

Building Services
 The New Engineering and Design Facility incorporates a highly efficient
services strategy alongside a sophisticated Building Energy Management
System. Sustainability was at the forefront of the design.
 All Services will be controlled and managed by a BEMS control and
commissioning strategy.
 Natural Ventilation & Integrated Mechanical
 The building will primarily be naturally ventilated in conjunction
with a highly responsive control system. Actuators and Sensors
will determine ventilation rates throughout the building.
 Mechanical Ventilation was sought to ventilate those spaces which
require extra flow such as Basement level rooms, Workshops, WC's
and Kitchen units.
 Ground Source Heat Pump
 Space Heating will be supplied by a new Bore Hole Ground Source
Heat Pump.
 Lighting
 Daylighting and Artificial lighting have been integrated to provide
occupant comfort. Glazing maximises natural light where sensors
controlled by the BEMS will ensure space achieve a setpoint lux
level.
 Photo Voltaic
 Power will be distributed via energy supplied by PV panels running
at 49.92kWp
Sustainability
 Our Building obtains a clear sustainability strategy of which we have incorporated into
our design to reduce whole life economy.
 Ground Source Heat Pump
 Heat will be extracted via a bore hole GSHP from the ground. This system is a
clean form of renewable energy.
 Solar Voltaic' s
 By collecting energy from the sun and ensuring an efficient 23 degree placement
of Solar Panels power will be distributed throughout the building at an
extremely low carbon cost.
 Rain Water Harvesting
 High levels of down fall in the South-West will provide our building with
sufficient 'grey water' to be used for flushing, planting and other uses. This
system can reduce water usage by up to 80%.
 Green Roof
 A green roof system will be a hot spot for Bio Diversity and reduce the risks of
water irrigation and over stressed drainage systems. As well as absorbing
contaminants improving air quality.
 Passive Design
 Natural Ventilation and Passive Solar design will make the most of the earth
natural elements reducing the needs for over use of energy, thus reducing our
buildings carbon footprint.

Especially the interaction between how the building communi- cates with the western approach into the campus has been taken. Land- scaping has been effectively used to mould through the existing slope to channel peoples view to the building as they walk up out through the arch of the roundabout. Existing footprint of babbage is finished with a natural cleft stone cladding from devon stone to tie in with other parts of the cam- pus, a similar finish to elements of the roland levinsky building as a dark stone faced façade that is not imposing. Vertical timber battens of 50mm x 25mm from any generic building supplier, used to conceal curtain walling being giving a clean elevation to the east and west, fastened with a flexible point Nvelope NV6 system. Kingspan corten steel cladding sheets installed to northern aspect as a striking new addition to make a statement. The cladding system has a rusted protective layer that weathers positive- ly over time. Design Philosophy The arrangement of floors was dependent largely on being able to intro- duce as much natural light as possible, being the reason for the large double height space to south east of the forth and fifth floors, widely glazes stairwell tower and double set of rooflights to atrium that cuts through the centre of the new footprint. The circulation spaces largely revolve around the atrium as the core of the new building that all rooms feed off from. The atrium allows for the service to each floor via strains a two passenger lifts, acting as this anchor allows users to always know where there are inside the building. The use of a Glulam frame system has provided to be the most effective solution while being far more sustaina- ble than a steel or concrete alternative. Having carried out an analysis on the soil structure piles were decided to be the most appropriate method for foundations. The basement and implementation of two lecture theatres to the ground floor have provided several problems. Several re- taining wall has been placed around the base of the building to increase the structural performance of the basement struc- ture. Several significant steel elements have been added to reinforce where waffle slabs have been removed. Energy Modelling Energy modelling of the new building was undertaken to see the energy consumption of the building. This could then be analysed to reduce the consumption in different aspects. The original value was 817 kwh/ m2 / yr but though a number of methods further discussed bellow this was brought down to just 82.4 kwh/ m2 / yr which is only 20 points off the very hard target of 66 for architecture 2030. This could have been po- tentially achieved through further optimisation however the budget limited the building here. To reduce the points the biggest impact was reducing the U-value of the fabric this borough the overall consumption down significantly once each façade was done. They are the first four drips seen on the graph. The last graph shows several further measure that brough the number down even lower. Internal Images

  • 28. Building Services  The New Engineering and Design Facility incorporates a highly efficient services strategy alongside a sophisticated Building Energy Management System. Sustainability was at the forefront of the design.  All Services will be controlled and managed by a BEMS control and commissioning strategy.  Natural Ventilation & Integrated Mechanical  The building will primarily be naturally ventilated in conjunction with a highly responsive control system. Actuators and Sensors will determine ventilation rates throughout the building.  Mechanical Ventilation was sought to ventilate those spaces which require extra flow such as Basement level rooms, Workshops, WC's and Kitchen units.  Ground Source Heat Pump  Space Heating will be supplied by a new Bore Hole Ground Source Heat Pump.  Lighting  Daylighting and Artificial lighting have been integrated to provide occupant comfort. Glazing maximises natural light where sensors controlled by the BEMS will ensure space achieve a setpoint lux level.  Photo Voltaic  Power will be distributed via energy supplied by PV panels running at 49.92kWp

Sustainability  Our Building obtains a clear sustainability strategy of which we have incorporated into our design to reduce whole life economy.  Ground Source Heat Pump  Heat will be extracted via a bore hole GSHP from the ground. This system is a clean form of renewable energy.  Solar Voltaic' s  By collecting energy from the sun and ensuring an efficient 23 degree placement of Solar Panels power will be distributed throughout the building at an extremely low carbon cost.  Rain Water Harvesting  High levels of down fall in the South-West will provide our building with sufficient 'grey water' to be used for flushing, planting and other uses. This system can reduce water usage by up to 80%.  Green Roof  A green roof system will be a hot spot for Bio Diversity and reduce the risks of water irrigation and over stressed drainage systems. As well as absorbing contaminants improving air quality.  Passive Design  Natural Ventilation and Passive Solar design will make the most of the earth natural elements reducing the needs for over use of energy, thus reducing our buildings carbon footprint.
