1. Neutrogena Advert Evaluation
For my advert I choose to produce a spot advert for the company Neutrogena. Neutrogena are
known all over the world therefore I thought that this would be a great advert to make. I also choose
to make a spot advert due to the fact I have seen many spot adverts and they all have the same
codes and conventions.
While planning out my advert I had to research about Neutrogena and the code and conventions of
each spot advert. All the facial wash adverts I watched all contained the same code and conventions
such as an actress/actor, fresh water, bright lighting, close ups and music in the background. After
watching the different adverts and taking notes about what my advert should include I began to
draw up a story bored due to the fact it would help me when actually filming my advert. I watch
many Neutrogena adverts and took inspiration from them and followed their usually camera shots.
In my story bored I included a range of shots to make the advert more interesting and to keep the
audience’s attention. For my advert it showed a young teenage girl who wanted to get rid of her
spots but whatever she used her spots would never fade away, up until she used Neutrogena. After
she used Neutrogena her face was spot free and she felt better within herself which made her more
confident. I used this story due to the fact many other Neutrogena adverts also use a similar story
which always worked very well.
Also before I started to film my advert I sent a booking out form to Chris Gladwin asking if I could use
the camera for a certain day. I also filled out a risk assessment and a production log which helped me
record what I did on a certain day.
When I actually began filming my story bored helped me a lot and guided me in what I needed to do
next. I used Olivia Berry and Matthew Rogero as my actors who followed instructions very well and
gave their input whenever they thought I could improve a certain shot. After gathering all my shots
for my advert within a day I was ready to go back to college and edit my video. However as I
returned to college and imported all of my footage into Adobe Premier Pro I came across some
problems. As I watched my footage back I realised that some of the shots I had taken where blurry
and also some shots were very dark. This caused a huge problem with me due to the fact my footage
wasn’t up to professional standard which meant I had to find time in order to film more footage. For
two of my shots (one close up of Olivia after she’s used Neutrogena and a close up of the
Neutrogena product) I decided to use photographs instead of moving footage. As I watched old
Neutrogena adverts again I realised that Neutrogena also use stills of the product itself so the
audience can get use to what the product looks like. After realising Neutrogena also use stills of their
products it made me abit happier with my advert. At first I was abit unsure that the stills would
actually look up to professional standard however after editing both stills I was very happy with the
outcome.
In order to make both my stills look better I imported them in Adobe Photoshop which allowed me
to play around with my stills. I got rid of the backgrounds on both stills and replaced them with a
clear white background due to the fact I wanted Olivia and the Neutrogena bottle to stand out
against the background. After getting use to Photoshop was able to cut round the image I needed
and edit it to my content. After I was happy with my edited stills I imported them back into Premier
2. Pro and from there I edited them into my video. A really good advantage with Premier Pro is that it
allows you to add text to stills which was a perfect aspect for my video. Therefore when I imported
my stills I put text over the top of them to make them more professional. From there I imported
music which suited my advert very well and editing a clip which was quite blurry and dark.
After sorting out my advert making it to the best of my ability I exported my video and uploaded it
onto YouTube. After watching my advert back I am very happy with the outcome however I am
displeased about the quality of some of my clips and if I could do my advert all over again I would
pay particular attention to the lighting and quality of my clips.
