The document summarizes Matthew Longy's media photoshoot for the horror film "Lacerate". It is divided into 5 sections: 1) Experimenting with blood and charcoal on a burnt book to create a sinister atmosphere. 2) Using darkness to create a horror effect by shooting in a darker area. 3) Incorporating different camera angles and focusing on the damage done to the book. 4) Experimenting with light exposure to contrast the burnt book against a white background. 5) Concluding that the photoshoot was a success in capturing a range of images to design promotional materials for the film.

3. Experimentations with blood and
charcoal
• For the first set of photos I decided to burn part of the book
which we used in the filming of Lacerate and spread them
on top of and around the book itself. I did this because it
gave the book and the photos a sinister look and the
charcoal I used allowed me to create a darker atmosphere to
the photos. I also decided to use ketchup as blood as this
ties in with one of the conventions of the horror genre-
blood is always present, it allowed me to create a set of
photos that convey the message of the film and denote the
sinister undertones needed.
• Moreover I decided to break away from the convention of
the horror genre and not feature one of the main characters
from the film in this set of photos as I wanted to focus the
attention on what the film is primarily based on- the book.

20. Use of darkness to create a horror
affect
• Having shot the first set of photos with a higher
exposure to light I decided to experiment in a
darker area and see what the photos came out
like. I want to do this because darkness is one of
the key conventions of the horror genre and
when I researched into posters and magazine
covers for the horror genre they are all primarily
dark and sinister.
• I continued to use the ketchup and charcoal as in
the previous set as I wanted to continue with the
theme I already had and I felt it captured the
essence Lacerate and conveyed the message this
was something related to the horror genre.

41. Different camera angles and
techniques
• Having completed 2 sets of photos using the blood and
charcoal effect I decided to incorporate a variety of
new camera angles as well as focusing on the damage
done to the book itself. I decided to do this because I
wanted to highlight the damage done to the book itself
in the film, after all the demon was unleashed from the
book. The book is one of the primary features of
Lacerate and I wanted to see if I could capture the
dark, horrifying nature of the genre without using
common connotations such as blood.
• For this set of photos I decided to spread the ash and
burnt pages of the book around the book itself to try
and show the unnaturual theme of horror.

61. Variety of light exposure to create
horror effects
• I decided to continue with the theme in the
previous set but this time I thought I would
experiment and try to brighten up the images
to show the contrast between the burnt book
and the white background hoping it would
connote the difference between the darker
nature of demon and the lighter innocence of
its victim. For these photos I kept the theme
the same because it has produced good
photos before.

77. Conclusion and Evaluation
• Having completed my photo shoot I now have all the
images I need to begin designing my poster and my
magazine cover. I feel like the photo shoot has been a
success as I have been able to take a range of photos
using a range of lighting, camera angles and visual
effects. The phots I have taken will later be edited to
make sure they follow the conventions of the horror
genre and make them even better than I feel they
already are.
• Looking back on the photo shoot I feel I could have a
taken a few more photos perhaps in different locations
but due to the time limit I have to get the work finished
I decided against this option.
