High school student Joel Silver created ultimate
frisbee in 1968. He introduced the game to his
school's student council, and spearheaded the
first intramural game in 1969. In the same year,
Columbia High School formed its first team. The
group played informal games in the parking lot.

Lacking a proper field with goals, they designated
goal lines with whatever they had on hand.
The new game soon caught on among athletes at
Princeton and Rutgers, who played the first ever
collegiate ultimate frisbee match in 1972. Rutgers
was victorious, and remained the reigning
champion of ultimate frisbee for many years.
Today, ultimate frisbee is played by 100,000
athletes in more than 50 nations. It is now an
official World Games sport as well.
