On December 16, 1916, Boston University entered varsity sports with its men's
basketball team competing and winning against the Posse School of
Gymnastics. The following year, the students chose the terrier as the official
mascot, and that dog has remained its symbol since. During the first half of the
20th century, the school added men's ice hockey, baseball, football, and
soccer to its roster.
In the 1970s, Boston University began supporting women's sports. Women's
crew, swimming, and basketball represented the first of these activities funded
