The International Basketball Federation was formed in 1932 by eight founding nations and originally only oversaw amateur players. Basketball was first included in the Olympic Games in 1936 and has been dominated by the United States team, though they lost in 1972 to the Soviet Union. The first FIBA World Championship was held in 1950 in Argentina. Basketball quickly spread to colleges in the late 1800s and became popular at the high school level in the early 1900s, especially in Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky.

1. International Basketball The International Basketball Federation was Formed in 1932 by eight founding nations: Argentina ,Czechoslovakia ,Greece, Italy, Latvia, Portugal ,Romania and Switzerland .At this time, The organization only oversaw amateur players. Its acronym ,in French ,was thus FIBA ;the “A” standing for amateur. Basketball was first included in the Olympic Games in 1936, although a demonstration tournament was held in 1904. The United States defeated Canada in the first final, played outdoors .This competition has usually been dominated by the United States ,whose team has won all but three titles, the first loss in a controversial final game in Munich in 1972 against the Soviet Union. In 1950 the first FIBA World Championship for men was held in Argentina.

2. College Basketball and Early Leagues Naismith was instrumental in establishing college basketball .He coached at the University of Kansas for six years before handing the reins to renowned coach Forest “ Phog” Allen . Naismith’ s disciple Amos Alonzo Stagg brought basketball to the University of Chicago, while Adolph Rupp , a student of Naismith’ s at Kansas , enjoyed great success as coach at the University of Kentucky .In 1892,University of California and Miss Head’s school , played the women’s inter –institutional game. Berenson’s freshmen played the sophomore class in the front women’s collegiate basketball game at Smith College ,March 21 ,1893. The same year ,Mount Holyoke and Sophie Newcomb College women began playing basketball. By 1895, the game had spread to colleges across the country, including Wellesly, Vassar and Bryn Mawr. The first Intercollegiate women’s game a on April 4,1896. Stanford Women played Berkeley,9 –on9, Ending in a 2-1Stanford victory.

3. U.S High School Basketball Before widespread school district consolidation , most United States high schools were far smaller than their present day counterparts. During the first decades of the 20 th century, basketball quickly became the ideal interscholastic sport due to its modest equipment and personal requirements .In the days before widespread television coverage of professional and college sports ,the popularity of high school teams was Indiana’s Franklin Wonder Five ,which took the nation by storm during the 1920’s , dominating Indiana basketball and earning national recognition .Today virtually every high school in the United States fields a basketball team in varsity competition .The states of Illinois ,Indiana and Kentucky are particularly well known for their resident’s devotion to high school basketball, commonly called Hoosier Hysteria in Indiana.

4. Free Throw A free throw is the privilege given player to score one point by an unhindered attempt for the goal from a position directly behind the free throw line. This attempt must be made within 10 seconds. Held ball A held ball occurs when two opponents have one or both hands firmly on the ball .A held ball cannot be called until both players have both hands so firmly on the all that neither can gain sole possession without undue roughness. If a player is sitting on the floor while in possession, he should have an opportunity to throw the ball , but a held ball is called when there is a danger of injury . Pivot A pivot takes place when a player who is holding the ball steps once or more than once in any direction with the same foot, while the other foot –called the pivot foot is being kept at its point of contact with the floor.

5. Travelling Travelling is progressing in any direction while in possession of the ball , which in excess of prescribed limits Screen A screen is the legal action of a player who, without causing undue contact , delays or prevents an opponent from reaching a desired position. Field Goal Attempt A field goal attempt is a player’s attempt to shoot the ball into his basket for a field goal .The attempt starts when the player begins the motion which habitually precedes the actual shot .It continues until the shooting effort ceases and he returns to a normal floor position .The term is also used to include the movement of the ball in flight until it has become dead or has been touched by a player. Throw in A throw is a method of putting the ball in play from out of bounds in accordance . The throw begins when the disposal of the team or player entitled to it and ends when the ball is released by the thrower in.

6. Scoring and Timing Scoring a.A legal goal is made when a live ball enters the basket from above and remains in or passes through the net. b.A successful field goal attempt from the area on or inside the three point field goal line shall count two points. c.A successful field goal attempt from the area outside the three- point field goal line shall count three points. (1)The shooter must have at least one foot on the outside the three –point field goal line prior to the point. (2)The shooter may not be touching the floor on or be inside the three –point field goal line. (3)The shooter may contact the three-point field goal line , or land in the two point field goal area, after the ball is released. d.A field goal accidentally scored in an opponent ‘basket shall be added to the opponent’s score, credited to the opposing player.

7. Timing All periods of regulation play in the NBA will be twelve minutes. All overtime periods of play will be five minutes . Fifteen minutes will be permitted between halves of all games. 100 seconds will be permitted for regular timeouts and between the fourth period and /or any overtime periods.130 seconds will be permitted between the first and second periods and the third and fourth periods. A team is permitted 30 seconds to replace a disqualified player. The game is considered to be in the two –minute part when the game clock shows2:00 or less the time remaining in the period. g. The public addresses operator is required to announce that there are two minutes remaining n regulation and any overtime periods.

8. Interesting Facts The United Center In 1994 the old Chicago Stadium was replaced by the United Center .This state of the art arena became the new home to the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks .Costing over175 million dollars this 960,000 square foot building holds over 216 suites,50 restrooms ,46 concession stands ,9 elevators,8 escalators25,ooo seats ,4 baquet rooms, 2 restaurants,1 merchandise store and2,000 team members. The basketball arena and court is a regulation Robbins hard maple NBA floor .Made up like a large jigsaw puzzle the floor alone contains over 200 4’.8’ pieces. Just some interesting facts After each game an average of 7 to 10 tons of garbage is thrown out by audience and concession stands . Outside the arena is a statue of Michael Jordan called “The Spirit” created by Julie and Omri Amrany. Eye in the Sky by the Alan Parsons Project is played during the starting introductions of every Chicago Bulls. In the Bulls weight room of the United Center there are brown champagne stains marks on the ceiling tiles after the 96.97 and 98 NBA celebrations.
