You have a reasonable accuracy in the use of spelling, punctuation and
grammar.
You can Identify key features of a volcano
You use a good range of specialist geography words.
You can compare the features of shield volcanoes and composite
volcanoes

You can explain the differences between different types of volcanoes
Learning Outcomes – Success Criteria
LO: To be able to describe the features of the 2 main types of
volcanoes.
3. LO: To be able to describe the features of the 2 main types of
volcanoes.
Not all volcanoes are the same. Some erupt with huge explosions with lots of ash
and volcanic bombs. Others are erupting all the time, but not with explosions, they
just gush with runny lava. Today we are going to learn about these two types of
volcano, and why they are different.
4. LO: To be able to describe the features of the 2 main types of
volcanoes.
5. LO: To be able to describe the features of the 2 main types of
volcanoes.
7. LO: To be able to describe the features of the 2 main types of
volcanoes.
Your task is to make a pop up
version of each type of volcano.
You need to cut out the volcano
and colour the parts of the
volcano in the correct colour. E.g.
Ash cloud grey, magma yellow,
lava red and orange.
This tab at the bottom needs to have
glue on it. Do not cut it off!
8. LO: To be able to describe the features of the 2 main types of
volcanoes.
Don’t forget to give your diagram a title!
You are now going to use the
information slide to make
notes around your volcano.
Try to make your notes in
different colours to make
them more interesting.
9. 9
The lava running down the
volcano is thick like
treacle.
The lava escapes through
an number of vents and
parasitic cones
This sticky lava moves
more slowly.
Have a narrow base due to the slow
moving lava. It cools and sets before it
travels far.
steep sides.
And are made up of layers of ash and
lava
Mount St. Helens in
the USA is a
composite volcano
Are found at
destructive plate
boundaries.
They have very
violent eruptions,
which force volcanic
bombs out of the
vent.
Lahars (mudflows) can
happen when
rainwater mixes with
ash
LO: To be able to describe the features of the 2 main types of volcanoes.
10. LO: To be able to describe the features of the 2 main types of
volcanoes.
Repeat what you have just done
with the shield volcano now. You
need to cut out the volcano and
colour the parts of the volcano in
the correct colour. E.g. Ash cloud
grey, magma yellow, lava red and
orange.
This tab at the bottom needs to have
glue on it. Do not cut it off!

12. 12
Shield volcanoes have thin runny
lava which moves quickly.
This lava runs down hill quickly and
spreads over a long distance
before it cools.
The lava escapes through one large
vent which means lots of lava
reaches the surface
Are found at
constructive plate
boundaries.
They have very gentle
eruptions, and no
volcanic bombs
Mauna Loa in
Hawaii is a shield
volcano
Shield volcanoes have
are only made of lava.
Because the lava travels
far before it sets the
base of the volcano is
very wide and the slopes
very gentle.

13. LO: To be able to describe the features of the 2 main types of
volcanoes.
You need to ask
your teach for the
worksheet for
most likely to
task. This task
requires thinking
and colouring and
will test your
knowledge of the
two types of
volcanoes.
14. Task 1: Colour the statements in the on your sheet. One
colour for composite and one colour for shield.
Composite Volcano Shield Volcano
Gold & Platinum: Explain in your books why….
1. Composite volcanoes are more violent than shield volcanoes
2. Composite volcanoes have a narrow base and shield volcanoes have
a wide base
3. Composite volcanoes are more dangerous.
4. Composite volcanoes have thick sticky lava and why this matters
